.... Be it a collar, bed, supplement, anything, that you have felt has been invaluable, or has been commented on, or helped in the show ring, etc. In the countdown to the arrival of our new Whippet I am trying to reduce my list of completely unnecessary things to buy her, down to a sensible list of fantastic things. Help much appreciated :shaun: :shaun:

James Wellbeloved dog food, lots of cheap fleece blankets (so you always have clean/ uneaten ones!), a rubber type frisbee ring (again, get Wilkinson/ cheap ones cos they chew them whatever the price). I've also just bought them beautiful martingale collars from Juley (collarsrus) which I will always use now insetad of leather, but not sure they are suitable for pups. Kong Toys are also well worth the money, but not the kong stuffin to go in them - it goes rank very quickly and they'll play with them with ordinary treats or even with no treats.

The thing I wouldn't buy if I had a pup again is a crate. We did use it for the first couple of months but to be honest I never left them in it when I went out (I just don't like caging dogs for convenience, I just dog proofed the kitchen). I worried about them in it at night (in case they got themselves stuck somehow, or we got burgled and they got stolen -ridiculous, I know!) and after the first few months they didn't want to go in it at all, day or night. They also used to whine and we had to get up to let them out in case they needed the loo, which never happens now. However we do have older kids (teenagers) who are dog savvy and don't pester the dogs so it might be different if I had a toddler. I know that some people swear by them. The dogs now sleep in their own beds in our bedrooms and it works much better. They also creep into my youngest's bed, but he lets them.

Hope this helps :))

Apart from Howard my Whippet you mean? :teehee:

Here in Oz we have Blackdog Whippet Collars and Whippetwear Coats. I used a Blackdog Italian Greyhound collar as a puppy collar for Howie.

Both are great. Mind you I have collars for Howard from the UK and a coat on the way! ;)

Dolly and Remmy have lovely waterproof coats that wash and wear really well. They wear them everyday when out for a walk during the winter so wouldn't be without these.

I found a crate very useful for toilet training when Dolly was a pup, and to ensure she was safe when we were out. Never leave them in a crate for long periods though and take their collar off. I still have the crate and the whippets often sleep in it out of choice (the door is left open). We also use it for them to travel in when going on holiday in OH's car. I have another crate in the back of my car (shaped to fit) which I wouldn't be without.

They have a gorgeous snuggle bed (came from Togs for Dogs) which is lovely quality but unfortuately Remmy cannot get into it on her own, so whines until she is helped in (this happens many times during the day :- ). We have reverted back to normal dog beds now!! I would say they are great and whippets love the warmth but they need to learn to get in unaided!!

I like leather whippet collars for general use but they do have lovely posh collars made by Juley (Collars R Us) for special occasions.

get a Screaming Flying Monkey (w00t)

http://www.firebox.com/product/1820/Scream...Monkey?aff=1108

Zoe got one 2 xmas's ago in her stocking and the dogs went daft! honestly it shoots so fast across the room/garden and make this monkey sound they love it!

Smokey has now demolished 3 monkeys and 2 turkeys as he likes to kill his pray when he catches it lol,

but it has to be the best toy i have ever bought them :)

This might sound silly to a lot of people, but my best and most extravagant regular purchase for my whippies/lurchies is toothpaste! I have to buy it from the vet its called Virbac enzymatic toothpaste in poultry flavour, and I brush their teeth with it most nights. Its brilliant stuff and if you start getting the dog used to you brushing his/her teeth early you should manage to keep them sparkling all its life. The judge always looks at the dogs teeth when being examined in the show ring, and i think that if they are nice and clean and the breath is fresh it presents a good image of how you care for the dog even if he is only looking for the conformation of the teeth. My old whippies absolutly love the taste of it and are all over me when they see the toothbrushes come out in the evening, its thier evening treat!

The other thing I could not live without is a decent pair of dog nail clippers, again if you get them used to it young enough it will be a simple job you can do every couple of weeks while the dog is just lying on the sofa. And again the nails are always looked at in the show ring, and having a set of your own means thay you can clip them the day before you show so they are nice and trim, it might only be worth a couple of marks but I think the little things are worth it.

I also agree with Esty, a good quality food like james wellbeloved is worth every penny, I cut back on the amout of treats and uneccessary presents i was buying my dogs so I could feed them james wellbeloved, and this was the best move I ever made, even if it does take up most of my monthy ''dog budget''

A dog flap for the back door so they can go and sunbathe when its nice- its lovely to see a happy heap of sun worshipping whippies and siamese littering the garden on a warm day :D

Two things have been invaluable for me and Grace.

Firstly, one of those things you throw a ball with (long with a scoop on one end for the ball - don't know what they are called). A friend gave me one when Grace was a pup, and even though I didn't expect her to be into retrieving balls she loves to do that. We use one every day and it has meant it is easy to give her a good sprint when we are out somewhere safe, even if there are none of her friends around to run with.

The second thing is a puppy pen with eight sections that you can use together or in various combinations. She hated being left in it so we didn't use it much for that but it is still in constant use protecting bookshelves and electrical equipment from her attentions  . And after she was spayed I used it to stop her zipping up the stairs after the cats before she healed! I also used it when she was tiny and got overexcited and beside herself to create a small space for a short 'time out'.

My best purchase was a leather whippet puppy collar for Fred and it lasted him 8 years! He's now on his 2nd leather collar (both bought from a stand at whippet shows)...he's never needed any other collars.

I also bought him a green, quilted whippet coat from Countrymun about 8 years ago and it's still going stong and used most winter days when out and about. Of course it goes without saying that you need to wait until your pup is a fully grown whippet before spending money on a really nice coat....

A recent investment in a woolley jumper from Suerose on K9 has been a really good buy...he wears it most of the time now as he really felt the cold this year, even indoors.

A dremel for his nails...he hated clippers with a passion, even the guillotine ones. Wish I'd got one from the outset!

Finally a snugglebed....but it has its limitations as they can only get into with assistance.

A crate , seems quite expensive at the time but is great for the first few weeks You can put the crate beside your bed at night and you will hear when he needs out . It also keeps them safe and unable to chew wires etc when you have to go out . A kong is great too for when you have to leave them in the crate for a short time during the day . A dog being crate trained is great for when you go away on holiday you don't need to worry about then doing any damage . A crate trained dog is also more accepting of being confined if it were ever to be injured and have to be cage rested .

When your pup no longer needs the crate you will have it for the next one and maybe even the one after that

Stainless steel food and water bowls ....... some plastic ones can give off chemicals which, in turn, can cause problems.

Rawhide chews - keeps a puppy amused whilst you get on with the housework!!! :D

Mmm the dozens of coats and collars/leads are just optional extra's

Things that the girls and me need and use every day are sofa's, crate's,

figure of 8's, 2 toy boxes (use one the 1st week and the other the 2nd

week....prevents them getting bored with the same toys lol), grooming

gear (its relaxing and bonding i find) oh and a must.......decent camera

My biggest tip to anyone getting a pup is nails.....get the little one used

to having the dreaded nail clipping done as soon as you can

My best whippetty purchase was another whippet to keep my first whippet company oh and then another one LOL :clown:

Lovely strong leather fishtail collars...wouldnt be without mine really love them and leather leads too...

Oh and a nice large throw for the dogs sofa, as they have their own... :teehee: wouldnt be without that, that certainly was the best

thing I ever bought the dogs...the sofa.

Your list isn't getting any shorter is it!!!

Uh oh, just come on to see update and yes, my list is infact just increasing ;)

We are off to see Ziggy at her breeders again tomorrow, and finalise collecting her Easter weekend.

Big ticks already for crate, Kong toys, throw(s), and am spending far too much time (infact an unhealthy amount) looking at collars, coats, etc that she will grow in to! Her baby-sized things will be second hand or cheap as im imagining they wont fit for long.

Soooooo excited.

Thank you all for your posts and do keep suggesting.

PS Mr screaming flying monkey would last a matter of milliseconds if my terriers see it  but great idea!

Bedwise, DH has accepted that Zig will no doubt inhabit our duvet, sofa, etc, but its a good opportunity to get a new big bed that the three of them may, occasionally, get into lol. Mr practical husband wants me to get a waterproof one and then just pop vet bed in it, but I wanted one of the snuggly ones, cave style lol. What do you have?
