A very good friend of mine has offered my a young pure bred deerhound bitch, she is 10 months old..On the understanding that when I mate her he gets a bitch pup...I am waiting to see if another deerhound bitch from my breeding has taken, as I have first pick of the bitch pups from that litter..

I do prefer a young pup, picked from a decent number of pups so I can socialise, rear and train them my way, but the older bitch has something about her..

What do you think?

I would from the pic have her but then shes a pure bred deerhound Who wouldnt?! What I WOULD be asking is why hes wants a pup that your are to produce rather than keep her herself.

If I didnt know the man personaly I might be asking the same question..But I do know him, and have done for a very long time. The world of deerhounds is very closed shop, there are, I hate saying this, a lot more nastier people than nice people..big kennels want everything, stud fees, puppy sales the lot, but among them, there are a small number of good people, that help each other out etc..And, out of say 1020 people involved with deerhounds, I would estimate there are 20 that know what they are talking about..dog wise.

My foundation bitch for my lines came from this chap, his line, like mine, is predomently a bitch line. I bred dogs for work, but this bloke breeds for show, and we have both been very successful over the decades, but, even though he didnt course himself, a lot of the dogs he bred did. The show scene now requires massive deerhounds, almost Irish wolfhound proportions, way above what is functional..Brian shows, but his dgs are not as exaggerated as some other kennels, but more importanlty, he has maintained quality. This bitch will never make a champion in the show ring at present, but, he knows my likings, and believes she will suit me, rather than him. He knows she has the breeding behind her to produce both workers for me and show dogs for him, and knows, and trusts my prowess in breeding. I have a mate picked now for the future if I get her, and a few others that maybe of use. He knows she will not make a champion, but that progeny from her could, its like having another bitch, but just not keeping it at your place, a lot of breeders do this, but not on quite so ammicable terms

No monies will ever exchange hands, this is an agreement, with hopefully two satisfied gentlemen.

See-ing the photos of the bitch, to me, she has instant appeal, a very important factor for me, all my life I have gone with gut feelings, and I know I should take the bitch..But as I walk down the road towards my final benadiction, there are many other factors that put me off. Had I been 20 years younger I would be on the boat to Ireland now..

My daughter is getting involved with the breed, but, the appeal of getting a small puppy outways obtaining this young bitch, that is why Im swayed to get her myself, I dont want to become a commercial puppy farmer, but like most on here, I just love dogs.. ;)

shes a beauty,id go for it and if your still interested in coming to ireland you can always stay up at ours and do a bit of hunting

The bitch is absolutely spot on from what I can see and I covet her immensley.Lucky you to have such a dilemma, over the years I have had my hounds (peds) and now lurchers I wished I had received such an offer!!You talk about gut feeling, which was the way I always went ,and I think from your history it has always been right HOWEVER to me the fact that you are stayed by the thought of a pup of your own speaks volumes, isn't that gut feeling too?

If you can't or don't wish to take on both dogs perhaps it would be wise to go with you pup, after all you may still get the chance to get the older bitch, assuming your friend isn't in a rush to rehome her.

What a wonderfule dilemma!!!! Good luck with the decision :luck:

We have decided to stick with getting a puppy, which should be born soon :huggles: But, I have contacted my friend, and the bitch is still mine till I say yay or nay, so, I might get the bitch for myself, and the daughter can get the puppy,

The erge of getting back into deerhounds is biting hard, and Im sweating like a Geordie in a spelling test waiting to see if the bitch has pups :sweating:

So, thats how it is at the moment me old hearties.

Dont worry, if I get a puppy, I will be posing some pictures, and if I get the bitch, I will post her first rabbit.
