I have had lucy almost a year now and I have yet to meet another whippet owner. I would love to meet someone in my area that also owns and loves whippets. I am in Dublin in Ireland and anytime I am out walking Lucy I get comments like "is that a whippet? They are quite rare arent they?"

I just dont understand why more people over here dont have them as pets. I am sure they must be out there and perhaps I dont know about them. The only whippets that I know of are the ones I see on sites kept by people that dont care for them, usually back yard breeders . Personally I am not interested in lamping or racing but I am interested in agility and flyball and general dog training. I know there are quite a few whippet owners in northern ireland but thats a bit far from me. Surely there must be some whippets in the repuplic of ireland that are loved as much as the whippets I see here on K9 Community? If anybody knows of anyone please post here or pm me. thanks

Hi there

I dont leave near you (im from Manchester), but i dont often see many other whippets in our area. On the rare occasion i have done, it is truely lovely to watch them playing & running together. Also, when we went on holiday to Anglessey in North Wales during the summer, we saw lots of other breeds of dogs out and about, but not one whippet. I wonder if whippets are more popular in some areas of the country than others? Erm...

We live in a largish village of around 2000 folk in Derbyshire. Including ours (3), there are 2 other whippys that i know of around here. There aren't that many, and we dont see others when we go walking away from our area.

I hope that you can find some other whippy owners in your locality, they do look lovely running together.

im sure there was a post somewhere about where are all the pups going or somthing similar,

and it was comenting on how many pups there were about yet how rarely whippets are seen :blink:

we are in edinburgh an i have see to date 8 whippets (5 with one person, and 2 with another and 1 on its own) when ever i am out i regularly get commets, like, "whippets are rare arnt they?" or "oh you dont see many whippets nowadays"

if you think about it though, there are so many different places to walk and at what ever time of day/night you want, the chances of seeing a certin dog or breed are greatly reduced unless you both do the same walk at the same time of day. :wacko:

As far as I know Diva is only one of two whippets in our town - though we often see quite a few during the summer months when the tourists hit town :lol: And I'm not shy...I'll blatantly go up and talk to the owner for a cuddle

I can't understand it because they ARE the best breed in the world and THE perfect dog - I'm forever telling folks how fantastic they are and telling them to get one

at all. I get a lot of elderly men tell me they

used to have a whippet way back though :lol:

And suprisingly a lot of people think the girls are Italian's,

now im sure an Italian is a rarer sight than a Whippet :wacko:

I have to arrange to meet a friend with her Whippie if Blue wants someone who can keep up with her...my theory is that all whippet owners walk their dogs in obscure, isolated places to prevent such happenings as Sandwich and handbag thefts... :lol: :thumbsup:

As you will remember I am 'one' of those whippet folk based in Northern Ireland Sorry you didn't make it up to our Whippet Club Championship show at the end of September , it would have been lovely to meet you We often show our whippets in the south aswell, infact we are taking 5 of our whippets to Cloughran All Breed championship show on Saturday 15th November. The show is at The National Show Centre, Cloughran, Co. Dublin (adjacent to Dublin Airport).Judging starts at 9.30 am, but there are a few breeds in the ring before whippets......se we may not be being judged til lunchtime!!!!! Perhaps you'll get a chance to pop along and say hello? :thumbsup:

Same here Ann, we get lots of elderly people coming up to talk Whippets to us but we hardly ever see any other Whippies. You can't move for tripping over Westies though! and we're in Yorkshire

I didnt use to see many either in my town, but when Toby sired a litter last year five out of the six were taken by people in my town (w00t) , so now I see whippets regularly :thumbsup:

in Delamere Cheshire i have only seen one other whippet besides ours..but when we go to Padstow cornwall this year we must have seen around eight different whippets....which was amazing and good fun..we reckon all the whippets are down south....

I agree they are all in bed, they don't like going out in the rain (which is most of the days here!) and they are in the top 20 because most people have multiple whippets !! remember the poll on how many whiplets each owned...I think the most common no: was 3 or 5

PamW....we were in Delamere forest yesterday, didn't see you but saw 12 yr old Tizer and another called Nipper.

At home in our regular park all the other dog walkers greet us with 'aww, here's Portia' then realise she's not, she's Ella , and to this day we have yet to bump into Portia ourselves !

These last two posts are very promising for me - when Grover and Roscoe can go for big boy walks in the New Year we hope to spend quite a bit of time round Delamere so may well see you there. I went over to Daresbury today to try out a walk even before I've got the dogs :b Excellent whippet country, I reckon!

I think that is probably the truth. Also after posting I realized that I often find my whippet is invisible. For instance, I am standing at the door waiting for her to come in and find that she is already inside. I didn't see her pass me. :lol:

I am sure whippets have the ability to make themselves invisible.

I think you might be right about that. I'm in a small town in mid Devon and have met at least seven other whippets who live locally. The other week I took Grace out for a run with one of them, and an afghan puppy and his owner joined us too. It was a hoot!
