6 weeks is the best age for a pup to leave its mother,i know a lot on here will disagree but there you have it,hence it being for sale at 6 wks

why do you think 6 weeks is the best age?

Sorry, I totally disagree, my, almost 6 week pups are still having a drink from mum and still learning to interact with their litter mates. Although they are eating well, I certainly don't feel they are ready to go off to new homes yet. I like to get them used to all sorts of household noises and to have outside time in the garden too ( weather permitting).

i agree with you juley.6 week old pups are learning very important social skills and learning all about body language which is of paramount importance to a dog,if they miss out on this important part of canine interaction with their siblings they can grow up with little or no social skills and dont give out the right 'signals' when meeting other dogs and can end up in fights etc cos they arent acting in a 'polite' manner to other more adult dogs.thats why i was interested in knowing why mark thinks 6 weeks is the best age to leave the nest.everything ive ever read and studied about dogs says this is a bad thing but maybe mark knows better?

The earliest i let a puppy go is eight weeks, along as they are all eating well and used to household noises etc.If i feel the pup not ready then they will stay until they are ready,i would be in no hurry to let them go

Certainly, the 6 to 8 week period is very hard work, especially if its a large litter. Would that have any bearing on letting them go I wonder..................... :- " :(

I agree with Juley - the pups are learning all sorts of pack rules from their mother and siblings at this early age and 8 weeks is the absolute earliest I would want to take on a new pup. They are still far too vulnerable at 6 weeks of age (w00t)

I don't know about selling a pup that young (not ever having bred any or intending to!)

But I certainly wouldn't buy one at 6 weeks - or rather if I did, I wouldn't be picking it up for 2 weeks

well iv bred litters of pups ,terriers, lurchers and whippets and they all went at 6 weeks old and never had a problem with them, each to there own i say and others should mind there own as i also say :- "

well i think it depends on breed as u say grey pups well some breeders keep them 6month and up sometimes and some do that to pick strongest pups and sell on wot they do not want.as for non ped whippet pups a lot sell them at 6 weeks old.

6 weeks is far too early for a pup to leave its mum and should still be bonding with her, that extra couple of weeks will make a huge difference to the puppies outcome on life

Our pups are now 6 weeks and 3 days and still having the occasional feed from their Mum. I could not imagine them going to their new homes yet. The last 2 weeks are the most important in a puppy's education, when they are with the rest of the litter and mother; they learn so much, which will have a bearing on the dog they become.

I too think that people wanting to let pups go this early may have something to do with it being the most hectic and difficult time as a breeder. :- "

There is nothing at all wrong with pups going at 6 weeks old if they are all healthy and are fully weaned there is no reason to keep them for longer. I am speaking from experience here my non ped had a huge litter of 12 last year by c section all weighing in at 15 to 17oz and all done really well all bottle feed and on soilds from 4 weeks old, past the vet check with flying colours. They were fantastic pups and sold like hot cakes and are all doing really well now one year on. I also bought a non ped bitch not so long ago at 6 weeks 2 days old and she is a fantastic little thing never had any problems with her at all. :)

The health and size of the pups is not the issue in my eyes. It is the valuable learning period with mother and litter mates that should not be missed out on.

Our first pup will be leaving one day before he is 8 weeks. The rest will be 8/9 weeks +

The Breeding of Dogs Act 1991 and The Breeding and Sale of Dogs (Welfare) Act 1999 cover England, Wales and Scotland.

Under these Acts:

• It is an offence for a bitch to be mated if she is less than one year old.

• Breeding is restricted to no more than six litters in a lifetime and no more than one litter per year.

• The breeder must keep accurate breeding records and puppies must wear a visible means of identity.

• Puppies cannot be sold by a licensed breeder to their final home until they are at least eight weeks old.

......................

Yes, I know the above applies to licensed breeders, but the object is the welfare of the puppies.
