How does one define a whippet. It has always been accepted that a small sprint greyhound bitch mating to a whippet. However, now the latest "fashion" is putting a half bred greyhound bitch to a FULL GREYHOUND. Surely, this is not the way forward. These off-springs are more like Greyhounds, both in size and weight. At the BWRA meeting 2 years ago the subject was brought up then and a warning that the scratch dogs are getting TOO BIG. Why is it then that a certain person is sending his greyhound cross bitches over to Ireland and mating them to FULL GREYHOUND stud dogs. I have nothing again No Limit dogs as long as they are bred correctly. (Not using Greyhound sires) Has anyone else any views on this topic?

my views are that no limit means no limit
as for breeding ghd stud dogs to whippet/ghd bitches i cant see the problem .if whippet organisations didnt want BIG dogs or didnt want to let people breed with ghd dogs then surley rules should have been enforced at the start

Having just read the above, i am not sure if there is a difference between sending a whippet (greyhound cross) over to ireland to get mated to a stud greyhound than one to an english greyhound except the person who done this was getting his bitch mated to the dog which he wanted......which just happened to be in ireland. With reference to the size of No Limit dogs i have been told that when breeding whippets to greyhounds you are in the lap of the gods as to the size of the offspring :clown:

Hello Honey Bee, I don't know your name but it is obviously me that you are referring to. Yes I have mated Molly Stag to a greyhound as I also mated her to Two Become One an 18 lb dog. When I mated her to two become one I wanted to create a no limit dog small enough to run straight racing, because of the whippet in her I ended up with 3 bitches 18, 20 and 22 lbs, fortunately I got a dog out of the litter which is now 34 lbs. So yes I have now put her to a greyhound and I will keep a small bitch for breeding (to a whippet) and I hope to create a no limit dog capable of taking on the likes of BANJO a dog that is not only large but which is an out and out spoiler. I have run Come On Ernie against this several times and have been smashed into the inner and outer rails. Nothing has been done. Now I am to create a dog big enough to be able to take these sort of knocks. If something is done about dogs of any weight constantly spoiling races I will happy to breed smaller no limits. In the meantime I will do as I please and also why is it acceptable to breed a male whippet of any size to a greyhound but not the other way round?

Gary-_- This is old news this topic has been brought up before about Nolimts i thought it had be laid to rest and left the people who enjoy running the big dogs to run them we have raced both big and small dogs in the past and had the same enjoyment so what is the problem? (w00t)

on this subject pups will be for sale and as for going to ireland for the right stud dog thats up to us and on that remember a line has to start somewhere and here one more for you honey bee we have mated a top class sprint bich who was retired because of injury breeding is annies bullet larkhill jo check that and was mated to an 18lb dog we are taking orders just get in touch with me or gary. p.s. at the next agm i going to ask for bigger traps for the no limits as one of our team got stuck in the trap the other week lol thats a joke by the way lol :cheers:

I personally have 2 no limits but dont bend race them at the minute this has nothing to do with the size of other no limit dogs mind because if I personally thought a dog was too big I wouldnt run against it. Because of the size of the boxes on the straights I think u will find that a whippet over 50lb u will find it very hard to get it into the boxes. Got to agree with oxosmith I thought this topic was finished with now? (any of yours no limits oxo?) Also agree with Dazgail its in the lap of the gods. We bred a 38lb cross whippet greyhound to a 22lb dog and ended up with a litter of only one weighing 50lb. I personally don't have a problem with the size of the dogs, but honestly believe that once it becomes less than half whippet it no longer should be eligible to race with whippets, but that does not mean we cannot cater for them at our race meetings in some way or another. The problem with the bwra's own general racing rules is that the first rule states:- Whippets are to be whippet like in appearance and recognisable as a whippet,... well when does a whippet stop looking like a whippet ?

I think it is fair to say that those who breed pups to race in the no limits aren't always trying to breed pups which resemble greyhounds in size, height and weight. Its just that it sometimes happens that a pup in a litter may throw to the greyhound. What does the person who bred the pup or the person who buys it do......Not race the pup?.......Hopefully not. Think of the fun travelling all round the country racing their dog, meeting new friends, spending a fortune, coming home absolutely knackered they would miss out on...only looking forward to doing it all again the following weekend. Whippet folk must definitely be the maddest bunch of people i have ever met. :cheers: :cheers:

As has been said in all replies, this is an old topic and should be laid to rest as this gets us no where.
The issue should be what are the NWRF and BWRA doing about dogs spoiling races regardless of size? There are certain dogs being seeded wide when they are obviously railers and vice verca and there are several dogs spoiling races because they are not chasing the lure and nothing is being done about this. I myself have been taken out in 4 races over the past year by the same dog and the dog in question has not even had a warning. I would like to make this a new topic and get your views. Has anybody had a dog in the past year that has lost a race through the neglegence of another dog owner. I myself if I had a spoiler like that in my kennels it would not be there for long for they have no place in racing.

I think that if you can't tell whether it's a small greyhound or a large whippet then it fails the BWRA rule since the dog in question obviously doesn't look like a whippet. Whippets even at the 40lb mark are clearly different to greyhounds and I would expect most BWRA officials to be able to differenciate between a greyhound and awhippet. A 3/4 bred greyhound 1/4 whippet isn't likely to be of whippet like appearance.

If you breed 3/4 or 7/8 greyhounds ( ie 1/4 or 1/8 whippets) then you cannot expect to produce dogs that resemble whippets - they will obviously resemble greyhounds. Such breeding will produce dogs that are more greyhound than whippet.
Personaly I feel that a new weight group should be created for the bends, say upto 55lb and the No Limit for those dogs over 55lbs. On the straights the use of whippet traps prevents " greyhound types" from running.
If we are to allow 7/8greyhound 1/8whippet crosses to run then why disqualify full greyhounds from the No Limit ?

Yes Gary i had a dog take my little bitch (amazin grace) out last year at nwrf bend champs ...which resulted in her badly injuring her hip ...we have layed her off since it happened ,till a few weeks ago , and at the moment she is not showing anything like been the bitch she was before the injury..
I always thought if you can get a no limit in a whippet trap then let it run ..as long as there running with dogs there own stamp theres no problem
its only the same as running a greyhound ..you could have a greyhound at 56lb in weight and be racing against a greyhound 80lb in weight

IF YOU HAVE A DOG WEIGHING OVER 40LB AND WANT TO RUN WITH THE NEW NWRF OR BWRA, SIMPLE YOU GOT TO RUN IT WITH THE NO LIMITS NO MATTER WHAT SIZE THE OTHER DOGS ARE.SO UNTIL THE WEIGHT CLASS IS CHANGED YOUV'E NO CHOICE UNLESS YOU RUN WITH THE IRG WHICH IS 40 TO 44LB ,THEN NO LIMITS,NO MATTR HOW BIG OR SMALL YOUR DOG IS ,IF ITS FAST ENOUGH ITS GOOD ENOUGH,HONEYBEE WHAT DO YOU WANT THE OWNERS OF THE BIGGER DOGS TO DO WITH THEIR OVER SIZE WHIPPETS

I can't really comment on your misfortunes as i have never been to england to race my dogs round the bends, however in your own experiences, during what part of the race have you found your own dogs getting spoiled, ie from the boxes to the 1st bend or during the latter part of the race. The reason i am asking this is that maybe there is a common trend. Maybe others who have also had similar misfortunes can comment.
Ps I hope no one was offended at my earlier comment that all whippet folk are the maddest bunch of people i have ever met. It was mean't in a good sense. After all there aren't too many people who would go to the lengths of time, trouble, money and energy to pursue their beloved sport. God bless you all. Just down right doggy mad!!!!!!

Firstly, I would like to add I do have scratch dogs, i.e. 36lb. 40lbs & No Limit. The sires being 26lbs and 20lbs.
I think you are missing the point I am NOT AGAINST the No Limits all I am saying is I do NOT agree with the sires being full greyhounds. Most whippets have greyhound bloodlines - hence the variation in size and weight. I agree there should be more classes for the bigger dogs, mainly for safety reasons. My apologies if I have offended anybody, especially Gary, but I just do not agree with full greyhounds being used.
