i always wanted a whippet, and have now got one..........she is the sweetest, funniest girl and we wouldnt be without her :huggles:

she is great with the kids, great in the house, pretty good off lead although she has her moments where the old selective hearing hits :- "

her only bad points are that she will steal any food she can get her paws on :- "

:- " she nicked my toast yeaterday, and when we first got her she would steal food out of the kids hands  we have since stopped her doing this with the help of a water pistol :- "

i would tell anyone looking to get a dog...........to get a whippie :huggles:

(working on the old man to let me have another now :sweating: )

Is it wise to crate them when young until you know they are not destructive, obviously a large crate.
i would reccomend crating any pup..........its good for them to have their own space and also if you have to do bits and bobs around the house you can put pup in their crate and you know he/she is safe............also stops them trashing the house :- "

Yes,I agree crates are good. Mine still go in their's when they want their own space

Oh Hely you have to get another whippie soon

Obviously I love whippets - but with the number of whippets I have heard of recently that have been returned to the breeder I think it is best to look at the worse case scenario...

Whippets are wonderful adults but puppies and for the first 1- 2years can be a nightmare, FULL of spirit and are like little whirlwinds on legs! Also they are sighthounds first and foremost, and despite whether they are worked or not they WILL chase if they get the opportunity - one of mine to the extent he could only be let off the lead in fenced areas and he is so prey-driven and believe me this is not down to lack of training.

One of mine is angelic, never chewed or messed anywhere, never runs away - the other is the opposite!

In my opinion dogs are better as single dogs and as pets, they are more content, very soppy and happier with repetitive play. Bitches are a little more strong-willed and single minded. I have both, I nearly always recommend dogs to people that want just one whippet as a single pet.

I adore whippets, but don't think they are suitable for everyone - they are not like a collie or spaniel and wag non-stop greeting every one they meet as a long lost friend. Whippets can be quite snooty and particular who they say hello too. I wouldn't change mine for the world :huggles:

gypsy is very picky who she says "hello" to, she can be a bit snooty at times.......but when in she in her loving mode (which is alot) she is lovely.......although having whippet sitting on your lap is not that comfy :- "

Crates are great for house-training and for knowing that puppy is safe. Ruby loves her crate because it is her bed and her own space, although she is only in it at night or if I have to go out. She has another one for travelling in the car. I put a divider in the bigger one in the house at first, but now she is 17 weeks I have removed it. For a small puppy it is best not too give too much room. If there is a lot of room the puppy may well mess the other end of the crate from where he/she sleeps. But if there is only room for the puppy's sleeping area it will not dirty its bed and make house-training much easier. Ruby has never messed in the house from being 8 weeks old.

Whippets can be very naughty but then all puppies will chew etc. They do fly about at top speed. I think the main thing to be aware of with a whippet as a pet is that they are hounds, and hounds are somewhat different to other dogs. It is not too difficult to train them by any means, but they are independent and are not so easily trainable as some other breeds. If they are running, recall can be very difficult but with training when young there will be a measure of obedience, much depends on the dog and/or trainer. This is the same for all the hounds, and also like the rest of the hounds they are thieves. But these are not difficult traits to live with and are far outweighed by their cleanliness, lack of doggy smell, and all their other virtues too numerous to mention.

Best of luck with your future whippet, I'm sure you won't regret it, but wise of you to be well prepared first.

Pauline & Ruby

Do you know Hely, I just so understand how your OH feels. From the start I intended getting two whippet bitches, but Ruby is pretty much a good girl, especially with her cleanliness and very good at night and about being left if necessary, that I am afraid of upsetting the applecart now.

I agree Jo - our adorable whippie boy is very soppy and loving. I've never had a whippet before and didn't know there were such cuddly wee dogs around! At home he is confident, boisterous and very very loving. Out and about - sometimes he will be a bit stand offish when people want to pet him - he can give the impression of being a bit timid or nervous but I know better! And yes... he can be a dreadful wee thief but I wouldn't change a thing about him - best pet I've ever had. :D Oh - forgot to say - the welcome he gives anyone when they come to the house is completely OTT! i understand both sides here as i was really worried about having another as i didnt think my dog would welcome a new addition after a lot of thought i went ahead and now i can honestley say its the best thing i did as ididnt realise just how lonely my girl was .... would i now add another probably not as i like you both would be worried about upsetting things id say go with your gut instinct whippets do like the company of other dogs but you do know your dog good luck hely with whatever you decide :luck:

gypsy is great and we all love her to bits............so although i have my moments when i nag him, i really think we are better off just having old gypo :)

she fits in with our family so well, dont know we have got her sometimes, and she has her little whippie friends she plays with everyweek (haycrofts, peggy and bow)

couldnt be happier :huggles:

Think you are right Hely.If your one is settled and as you say she has her whippie friends to come and play, why rock the boat!!

It's K9's fault i've got two, i kept looking at the pictures of all the

whippets snuggled up together and wanted Sada to have a friend.

I knew i was going to have my hands full with two youngsters

together but it will be worth it when they get out of this mad
