Hi all,

I have another new addition to my expanding menagerie....(already had a whippie and OH :clown: )!

Not another whip im afraid but a very handsome TB ex racehorse. I picked him up from the racing yesterday and he is now settled into his new home fine. He is only 6 so im hopeful that he might take to a career as a ridden horse since he didnt much see the point in racing (too much effort! :D ).

His racing name was Leading Fairy, so he is curretly called Fairy (w00t) . Any ideas on a new name, he being a he and not a she........!

Anyhoo a bit off topic  . Pimms has reacted in two ways, firstly she is crazy around him, tries to bite his legs then runs off at full pelt. Secondly she is super jealous and as soon as we got home she made her feelings very clear by insisting on sitting on my knee all night in protest that I didnt love her anymore, poor whippie  !

Has anyone any experience of whips/horses? Will she calm down about them once they become part of the furnature? Luckily the new horse is an o:) and just watches her as she bounds around!

Gemma xxx

Gemma you lucky thing. He certainly sounds lovely your horse - there are a few ex racehorses in livery at the farm where I work. they are lovely too.

I havnt any experiences with whippets and horses together - I Wish. :- " but I think maybe Whispersmum had horses and whippets - and also Littleminx too.

Good luck with them all :luck: :luck: and some pictures would be great.

Oberon was king of the fairies in Midsummer nights dream, this may be a name to consider.

I think you will have to be very careful, one lash out from the o:) horse if it makes contact will probably kill or seriously injure silly Whippet. Im sure she will calm down its a shame they couldnt just have a really gentle kick so as to get the idea.

im sure she will settle down, iv got just one horse now and mine are fine, i even ride in the field with the whippets, like karen said as long as your careful that the horse doent kick or step on her.

do you have any pic's please :D

Hi Gemma,

We have horses and Whippets and no problems at all with them.

We had last summer 7 horses in total but have managed to cut back (horses are like Whippets, you just keep on adding and adding and adding and adding and.........) we now just have the two an ex racer like yourself who is my brood and her son from last year, a half-bred.Unfortunately earlier on this year we lost my husbands big horse to a heart attack he also was an ex racer,a black type, anyway up until then we used to take the whippets with us out on horseback through the woods and along the bridlepaths, they thoroughly enjoyed it!! It takes a while also for the horses to accept the dogs, especially if they have not been used to dogs running up behind them and alongside them as sometimes it can put the spook in a young horse,my then young riding horse was abit spooky around the dogs at first but eventually he accepted them fine, even when they lept out of the undergrowth as we cantered past!! (w00t) . The only problems similar to your own that we encountered was when we had a litter and the pups used to try and bite at the fetlocks and tails of the horses as we were bringing them into the stables, we have our own stables here at the house so the dogs were always around about and did eventually earn to stay away from the back end of the horses after a couple of swift kicks! We had one little pony brood here at the time who was great for teaching them, she used to kick out but not aggressively so never did any damage but it just made them get a little respect quite quickly. All our other horses would've just stood there and let the dogs bite them!

I would imagine that Pimms will settle down soon enough,it is all new to her but she will have to learn no to go for horses legs and I have to say that shouting at ours and telling them NO never worked it took the pony to teach them and then they were fine.

But once you get over the initial settling in phase they make a great hacking dog,as they are about the only ones that can keep up easily!!

The best of luck with your new horse,ex-racers are fantastic ours made great hunters and I have even shown my Mare.I just wish more people would consider them...........they are'nt all NUTS!!

All good advice people, :D !

Im sure Pimms will calm down, once she accepts that new boy isnt trying to steal her mummy  !
