Hi all,

I've just found this site and wondered if any of you nice people out there could help me?

I don't know whether I am asking for the impossible, I probably am, but I have just adopted 2 whippets from Wood Green animal shelter. They have told me that they had pedigree papers, but that the previous owner didn't bring them with him. They have tried to contact the previous owner on my behalf but the gentleman had to move into rented accommodation so there was no forwarding address.

These 2 whippets were born 2 years ago............. so 2007. He bought them at 12 weeks of age. Wood Green animal shelter is in Godmanchester nr Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire so maybe the pups were born within a radius of here.

They would have been sold together and were part of the same litter.

The male is a fawn & white & the female is a dilute brindle & white.

What are my chances of finding the pedigree?

Linda

p.s. I've tried to attach an image to this post, but haven't worked out how to do it yet :(

Hi, unless you have the names or registration documents I would think it nigh on impossible.

Billy & Lizzie acquired yesterday.

Billy and Lizzie are gorgeous . Sorry I can't be of any help in your search .

Aw Linda your new babies look well at home already  I'm definitely adopting next time, having got my first two whips as pups - did you have to put your name down for whippets and wait til some came in or did you just visit and saw them? Often by the time they get on websites etc they are already reserved.

Without their pedigree names there is little you can do yourself to trace their ancestry, however there are a LOT of whippet people on here and there may be a small chance someone recognises them. You could also try looking up breeders in your area? One other tactic may be to go to your local paper and put the 'shout out' in your local community via a heartwarming tale of how you rescued them and just want to know about their family- they love stories like that, it would be free and would reach neighbours/ relatives of the original owner so you could perhaps get their papers!

:luck: Good luck and keep us up to date with their progress!

Also, are Billy and Lizzie the names they had at the shelter? Because you could go onto thewhippetarchives.net and put their pet names in the search engine - it's a small chance but worth checking, perhaps.

Hi Welcome to K9

How settled they look after a few hours :)

The one in front (sorry I do not know which is which) looks like he / she could do with feeding up and regular excercise. Absolutely no reflection on you :)

Poor things being in rescue no wonder they look so comfortable on your sofa.! :p I have had many rescue whippets over the years and often with no papers. It would be nice to know their breeding but at the end of the day, it is not vital. As the others have said, they may be recognised.

I have Foxy's basic registration papers but never got anywhere with them. I know that there is likely to be some Oakbark in Foxy's and therefore Misty's heritage because of their markings but that is all I have 7 years down the line. If you need any help or advice over the next few weeks and months, there are plenty of us who have or have had rescue whippets that will be happy to advise. At 2 years, they should be young enough to adapt pretty quickly. Bless you for giving them a 'forever home,

Eve

im from that area so will keep my ears open, def not mine good luck with your search and a wonderful life with your whippets x

Poor little dogs, they look like they have had a rough time, lots of TLC and they will be fine. Well done for taking them.

Good on you, they look very grateful for a warm loving lap. I'm sure they will repay your care and attention a hundred times over and give you lots of joy. You'll find plenty of help and support here if there are any little problems to sort out. Welcome & good luck with your new friends :luck: :luck: :luck:

That's fantastic that you've given them their forever home.  I have two rescues and there is not a day goes by that I don't thank God that I took them. The one in the front looks very thin but with good food, exercise and tlc they'll be even more beautiful before you know it - keep us posted about how they get on. Good luck with your search :luck: :luck: and enjoy your lovely dogs. :D :D :D

Wow, What a reponse!

There seems to be a lot of support out there. I only stumbled across this site by accident whilst trying to find out whether there was a list online of puppies registered with the KC.

They went online on Wednesday night and were available from Thursday 10 am. To be honest I didn't pay much attention to them as we have 2 cats and we were only looking for a single "dog". Anyway, we arrived at 11.30 and I was persueded that 2 would be better than one as they would keep each other company, and they couldn't be separated as they were totally dependant on one another. So, by 12.00 we had a reserve on them. I guess it was a case of being in the right place at the right time.

I don't think they were badly treated or anything as they are very well adjusted dogs. The 'gent ' that gave them up only worked part time and had to go into rented accommodation, so I'm guessing maybe it was a retirement home (all supposition probably totally wrong! ;) )

I've not heard of the whippet archives .net, I'll have a look as Billy (the fawn & white) and Lizzie (the brindle) are the names the previous owner gave them.

I notice Wiggley you are in Newmarket. I'm not that far from you in Steeple Bumpstead.

Last night Lizzie started coughing and occsionally being slightly sick (Bile type sick) with a runny nose and occasional sneezing do you think this may be Kennel cough? I understand that if it is, it just has to take it's course like us with a cold. We'll keep an eye on it and contact Wood Green if it gets worse.

Also they are on a diet of Arden Grange Performance (wood Green started them on this) as Lizzie has a delicate stomach. As this is an extortionate price does anyone know of a cheaper dry alternative? I've seen on the Internet that some vets reckon Chappie complete over Hills. Wood Green advised us NOT to buy Bakers or Pedigree as the colours & additives they use can cause lots of problems.

On a more humorous note. Our cat decided to be very brave after 10 minutes of being introduced. When Lizzie was asleep he crept up to her head and had a good sniff. Then he decided that he would be extremely brave and pat her head at arms length. After no response he gave another few taps. Lizzie woke up bleary eyed, realised that the cat was within 10 inches of her head, and froze. Total denial. "It's not there" , help , "There's a scary ball of fluff next to me, it's going to eat me!"

Intoductions going well ........................ so long as the cats don't run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Linda

They definately need feeding up. Chappie is a good food, recommended for delicate tums, [tinned that is, a bit fishy smelling] Most of the top quality completes are expensive. Look for working or greyhound foods, they are vat free. Skinners, Burgess, Red Mills.

I doubt if you will find their pedigrees with just their pet names! But good luck.

hi linda,

i dont know much about kennel cough, but from what i do know you have to keep them away from other dogs, and if they have been in a rescue you should also let them know as it spreads really easily.

we feed our 2 a combo of Natures diet (which can be quite expensive but i feel is worth it, its just meat and veg nothing else) and james wellbeloved kibble

i buy them from Vetuk its free postage if you buy 3 packs of natures diet or over £30ish

i used to feed backers and pedigree, but ruby came out in a rash and was starting to rip her hair out so we had to switch and since switching the rash has gone and the hair is growing back.

lizzie and billy are gorgeous good luck with them

Hi Linda

I feed my two James Wellbeloved with a bit of tinned meat just to vary it a bit (they wolf it down with a bit of tinned meat in!). The James Wellbeloved is really good for them - they maintain a good weight and their coat is amazingly soft and glossy. It also doesn't make them hyper like Bakers etc does. It might seem expensive but I pay £39 a bag and it's delivered free from petplanet.co.uk. One bag lasts about a month so I think for two dogs £5 each a week is not much at all. I also give them human grade mince (cooked) once a week. Wendy (fallenangel on here) recommends spag bol for feeding up underweight greys and whippets! Whatever you feed them, make changes slowly as they may get upset tums and that's the last thing you want! :x

The cough does sound like kennel cough - my two are just recovering from it. It sounds like they are trying to cough something up but can't. You only need to see the vet if they are otherwise unwell eg off food, have temperature etc as in this case they may be given antibiotics. One of mine caught it first and he had antibiotics due to a temperature but my other dog just had the cough for a week and was then ok. Both recovered very quickly (some websites said it could be 4 weeks before the cough went - eek) but I read that they can remain contagious for a couple of weeks after the cough has gone so be on the safe side and don't let them get too close to other dogs. There's a very high chance Billy will already be infected if Lizzie has it :(

I buy Aukarty from CostCo. If you have a CostCo near you and a membership card, it is reasonably priced. It is VAT free as it is for working dogs and costs about 13.00 for 15kg. It is totally organic, high protein and easily digestible. My younger whipppies do really well on it but it is too high protein for my older two. The only problem is that sometimes it is out of stock for a few weeks. I usually buy 4 bags at a time so that I do not run out. Aukarty costs about 30.00 a bag in regular shops.

Have you had a sighthound before?

with any food, it works out cheaper getting the big bag. I really like Arden Grange and normally order from their site, the performance is 37.59 for a 15kg bag or 35.68 for the adult chicken 15kg, James Wellbeloved 15kg bags cost 44.49.

Hi

Welcome to the mad world of whippets. I have two (10 months old now) and feed them on Skinners Field & Trial Duck & Rice Complete it is hypoallergenic so may help with a delicate tummy. A 15kg bag lasts about a month and costs £20 - dirt cheap really for two dogs. It does sound like kennel cough - as Esty says it passes after a week or so, but they will remain contagious for up to 4 weeks after symptoms have passed.

Good luck with them

zahra

sounds like kennel cough, keep well away from other dogs whilst their coughing the air and mist they cough out is very contagious, a teaspoon of honey each will help to soothe their throats or childrens tickly cough mixture.

my pack have skinners duck and rice at about £20 for 15kg and are trying the maintenance bag now £15 15kg from my local farmers merchants with couple of times a week cheap raw supermarket mince of any type or tinned mackeral pilchards etc any oily fish for their coats occasional tinned tomatoes baked beans and spaghetti in tomato sauce and any cooked leftovers pasta veg etc for variety.

they look lovely, they look like they've landed on their feet (or the sofa)
