if u r lucky enuf to win a race wud u prefer a bigger amount of money or a trophy and a percentage of the entry money?

i personally like to win a trophy as its something to show 4 winning. just interested to c wot other people think. oh and its nice to win a jacket too.

Is it a question for ped and non ped racing? I would prefer to win a trophy too :)

I think when money comes into it it's a different ball game if you know what I mean, a trophy is more for the dog, money is more for the person in my oppinion.

It's nice when we do the odd cash prize lure coursing meet but it's not about the money for me, because I just go for a good day win or lose not because of whats on offer as a prize, (I don't usually get one anyway  )

And trophies are more of a memory they last longer than money, especially in this house

the question is 4 any kind of racing. like your answer lesley

I love jackets, in fact it was all I ever wanted was to see my lad in a little velvet number. Can't tell you how chuffed I was to show all my work friends his win and I still admire them now. :b

I liked the collars too at this years Champs, a lovely touch and different from the norm.

As for prize money, I suppose it depends what you do with it. I, (like many of my friends) have kept every envelope but I've made deliberate attempts to use 'Dobby's money for something special e.g. his first ever winnings I used to buy me and Vicky a drink on a sunny evening at the Ginpit. I think it just makes it a bit more memorable to me.

My dear friend Ken used to go on about a ''golden muzzle'' win that used to happen in greyhound racing? I think that sounds like a good idea too.

Anything that's something to show for your win: Trophies, Certificates, Collars, Jackets, Pictures etc. It wouldn't bother me if the only money events were the two big Derbys.

Jackets are lovely and it's super for pictures but i think if the majority of opens offered them it would take the novelty away, annual trophies i find are brilliant, you can have your win, have a nice picture taken as a keepsake and then after the year take the trophy back, which must be a godsend if you have something winning regular.

We are only a small club (and only hold 1 open per year) and i think it's fair to say we give out to a high standard, trophies and the same amount of money for every class £10 (25 classes in total) (i don't see why a solo should be penalised for no-one else turning up for their class), trophies & jackets to the 6 overalls (bitch, dog, pup, yearling, veteran, scratch) and added money to the two main overalls - after all if you are going to do something, do it properly, i think it's only fair to reward people who have helped make your day a success.

I understand how much goes into running an open but i feel if you are advertising it (especially top ten) then you need to put some time in so that people who have made the effort to support you have something to show for it if they win. I know at one open this year we won overall yearling and came home with a couple of quid more than our entry money, i still have the envelope but it was a bit of a poor do considering you can get trophies cheap or a nice certificate would more than suffice.

i would prefer a trophy or jacket ,as for the money , i say let the club,s keep it ,,,,except the derby,s ,,,,,,,,

Not another who keep's the envelope (w00t) I have all my dog's envelopes and used the prize money for entering them into open's that year  or dog food.

John like's velvet jackets and all our's are on the wall, the special one is our first and Gizmo(Georgies Choice) won that at Wigton in 1996 (Top Dog).

Mine is Robbie winning the Scottish Derby Vets in 2006 :D , I never thought he could beet the bitch's, so that is very special to me

Gizmo (Guess Again) won his first open (Top Dog) at Scotland 2007, The trophy he won is on the tv, pride and place for ever

I like trophy's and jackets , as you have them for life

Robbie's first bwra and fed champ trophy's are next to the PC as is all the photo's of all my dogs racing  :huggles:

I love photo's of them also, maybe a wee bit more than jackets, money and trophys

You dont get prize money in pedigree racing, which personally I think is a good thing as it tends to tarnish things when money creeps in.

I like to get stuff for my dogs, :)) like dog bowls (which Ive won in the past) at least its a constant reminder of the day and the dogs always remind me especially when the bowl is empty

The only big prize money is at both English/Scottish Derbys

We are talking about at most £10 for your weight class win if your lucky   In some case's being top dog/bitch That's what you get

I think to date Ricky (Guess When) has won us the most money and it did not pay for the years racing/food/petrol/fees/vet bills also to race, but money does help (if only a few £'s)

moneyyyyyyyyyyyyyy (w00t)if we want to win money were in the wrong game apart from the derbys :p if i had to choose id say trophies at the opens and champs and ill have the dosh at the derbys please :p

LOL! I remember at this years Bends Bonanza when Vicky's dog, Cara won a doggy pack with a squeeky toy and all hell broke loose when Dobby wanted it. Needless to say poor Linda ended up giving Dobs her dogs toy just to keep the peace!

Dobs says can he race for toys or food? o:)

a nice big trophy for me but i mite have to wait a long time lol :p

Would be nice to win any thing in our case.a better prize would be to keep him injury free and able to race  collars are nice.

I love rosettes, trophies and was over the moon when we won our first (and only) velvet jacket (though that was at club level) ......I think its best when the winning dogs win stuff for themselves and a memento for their owners .... :)

Winning our first trophy was brilliant & its just as great to win a trophy now. It makes me feel very proud to look at my trophies & rosettes and recall that special race when my dogs ran there best...................Money wouldnt be the same for me :)

I think a trophy is the best thing to win dont really care about the money! Kids love to see trophies and jackets :D

When you first start whippet racing I guess its nice to have trophies-but then they can become a problem...you only have so much shelf space..

Got a black bin liner in the loft full of velvet jackets-what are you supposed to do with them?

I've seen them nicely framed but you can only do that with so many...

Its nice to photograph your dogs with their 'wins' jackets etc. Then you end up with a load of pics...

'I'm not moaning-by the way' Just trying to be practical-

In de-Clutter mood!

I like the collars you win now too David-They are useful and so is money towards diesel/travel costs, but take your point Garry about 'money tarnishing things' especially large amounts of money...invites the 'win at all cost brigade' into the sport

Karen

well i for one like to win trophies, and a little money comes in handy for travel costs, but scratch dogs do not get them same treatment as the little uns jmo. :rant:we went to an open this year and all supreme winners got trophies but supreme scratch dog didnt and it was bwra.take the derby winners little uns £300 no limits £70 big difference.why we all pay the same.?i also think its time to try 1/2 yardlb in these derby races, jmo,to give the 32lber a chance of some decent money.i know there have been rare occasions when they have won but it is few and far between.i know ,i have been doing this for 25 years now and nothing changes.  a little trophy does not cost a fortune, and they can always be donated back if you are lucky enough to win loads of them.jmo.

must admit 1/2 yard would give the bigguns a chance.and people would breed more middle to heavy weights. what heavy weight has won a derby?????

we all pay our entry and if your lucky to win your heavy weight class 9 times out of 10 pull out because you havnt got a hope in hell of giving 10 yards +. also if the biggun runs off if a littun wins the biggun flys in when the littuns on the lure and if they rag crazy will go through the littun to get the lure . so 1/2 yard would also be safer for all I.M O

safest racing 2ft per pound and fairest imo

recycling trophies is a great idea when i took over the rising sun i asked 4 some donations of trophies got loads and i use them 4 dog of the month or if we have a 10 yard dash. as lisa says kids love to win them. u cudnt really recycle a jacket though maybe wear it as a coat lol
