Zephyr Goes For Gold!!

wow!! well done Zeph and well done Beth!
how do you start on these tests?  I assume you don't have to do to the kennel club to do them

No, quite a lot of local training clubs run these courses, though far more run bronze than silver and gold. Good luck if you decide to do it :luck: - it would be great fun for Monty to join a local training club anyway

From the kennel club website:-

The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme was established for this very reason, to promote socially acceptable dogs and to teach owners how to train their dogs. After all, dogs are not born with the fountain of all knowledge. Just like humans dogs need to be educated so that they can live in harmony with society.

The Scheme is open to all dogs regardless of age or breed. The aim of the Scheme is to promote responsible dog ownership and in turn, enhance our relations with our canines, and to make the community aware of the benefits associated with owning dogs.

There are four levels of achievement as follows:-

* Puppy Foundation – For puppies, whereby basic training skills and socialisation will start to introduce them to life’s daily routine.

* The Bronze Level – For dogs that are relatively new to dog training.

* The Silver Level – for dogs that have their bronze level and have graduated to a higher learning curve.

* The Gold Level – this is the highest level of Good Citizenship and will show you a well behaved and trained domestic pet.Puppy Foundation courses will be run through Kennel Club Registered Dog Training Clubs, Kennel Club Listed Training Clubs, Adult Education Centres and Veterinary Practices approved by The kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme.

Details of your local course can be found by contacting the GCDS on telephone number 020 7518 1011 or by email on gcds@the-kennel-club.org.uk. Please include your full name and address when requesting information because packs are posted to you.

Well done Beth,

Wow Beauty and Brains...... Zephyr I mean. What a guy, he really is a credit to the breed in every respect.

Cathie

What a lad  Congratulations Zephyr and Beth :huggles:

 Well done Zephyr, that's quite an achievement! Muffin didn't even get as far as his first puppy award. :- "

Well Done Zephyr!!

And well done Beth for putting in all that hard work! I'm trying to get Cheetah through her Bronze at the moment, but I don't think recalls are supposed to involve crashing into the radiator at the end of the hall, and winding all the other dogs up because she's off the lead and they aren't!!

WELL DONE BETH :teehee:

I Knew you could do it & Zephyr I bet he was the perfect Angel o:)

Phoebe has her silver in a couple of weeks but I feel she is far too young. I'll probably just go along for the experience

Well done again & see you Sunday!!!

Well Done Beth and Zephyr

:luck: Phoebe

  I think age has made a difference - Zephyr was exactly the same when he was a youngster! :))

Congratulations Beth and Zephyr!!! Not easy to get, as Tigger and I know, it involves a lot of hard work. It does not mean they are perfect, though! I spent about half an hour trying to catch Tigger the other day, eventually had to pull him out of a rabbit hole by his tail!

 Maybe they should use rabbits instead of (or even as well as) food in the Gold Test!

 Well done Beth & Zephyr

Well done - fab result! Zair and I are going for silver in two weeks time (he's coming up for 14 months old), but think gold will have to wait a while as he really does not get the hang of the stop and drop to the floor on the recall!! He loves going to training ever week though and has made some great doggy friends!

Very best of luck Emily and Zair with your Silver, and remember, it is actually a STOP on recall in any position so you don't need to worry too much about the down :teehee: - I taught Zephyr a down on recall and it is fine outside on grass, but difficult in a slippery hall  so changed it to a stand and wait instead and that worked brilliantly.

Thanks Zephyr will try the stop and wait rather than a down to see if he can get the hang of it. Our trainer will insist on making all the dogs drop to a down and as the majority are collies they seem to just drop straight to the floor. Zair is so long in the leg and body that he finds it hard work if not impossible to suddenly stop and flop on a slippery wooden floor!

Emily - show him this

6. Stop the dog

The object is for the handler to stop the dog at a distance in an emergency situation. With the dog off lead and at a distance not less than approximately ten paces away the handler will be instructed to stop the dog on the spot in any position. Note: The dog is expected to respond straight away to the stop command but if moving at speed, will be allowed a reasonable distance to come to a stop.

Poor Zair :huggles:
