Five Nations International Lurcher ChampionshipIn line with our GREAT GAME FAIRS of IRELAND objective of giving Ireland's terrier & lurcher enthusiasts the opportunity of competing with the best on Irish soil, we are following last year's Five Nations International Terrier Championship with a Five Nations International Lurcher Championship with its final at Birr Castle on Sunday 28th August 2011. This will have a prize fund in excess of €1,000 and all qualifiers will receive a donation towards their expenses. All qualifiers will also receive a year's subscription to the Irish Countrysports and Country Life magazine, a 25th Anniversary Irish Countrysports and Country Life Tankard and 4 tickets to the Birr Castle Event. Please contact me on irishgamefair@btinternet.com if you would like your show (from anywhere in the UK or Ireland to be a qualifie). We already have five qualifiers in place so first come first served.

The Master McGrath Challenge

Since a boy I have been interested in the exploits of this great Irish dog and have been collecting memorabilia for several years.

When we were thinking of a new Irish lurcher racing challenge I felt it most appropriate to call it the 'Master Mc Grath Challenge'. The objective is to find the fastest dog in the UK and Ireland and to set a British & Irish record for a distance of 150 yards.

The first heats for this will take at John Dicker's Show in Kilkenny and the Ballywalter Game & Country Living Fair on the 1st May followed by the Mourne Show on the 15th May. Top two dogs to qualify from each show over the normal distance of the qualifying event - this may vary from show to show. The final heat and Grand Final will take place at Ireland's largest Game Fair at Shanes Castle on Saturday 25th June 2011. The top dog at each qualifying event will receive a year's subscription to the Irish Countrysports and Country Life magazine,a 25th Anniversary Irish Countrysports and Country Life Tankard and 4 tickets to the Shanes Castle Event plus there will be specially commissioned Master Mc Grath commemmorative scrolls for the top two qualifying dogs at each event.

The Master McGrath final will see dogs competing for a prize fund of over €1,000. Once again we should like applications from shows anywhere in the UK or Ireland to host qualifiers. Please contact me on irishgamefair@btinternet.com.

Iam really looking forward to birr this year as I didn't get to it last year for the weekend with the dogs. But pleased for my mum taking the 023 in the racing last year with her big fawn dog sukie . Only thing I wouldn't be happy with is the traps if thats wot u decide to do . not all dogs will be schooled for trapping. But looking forward to it

Thanks for all the memories and the trophys that went with them Albert.

To me its taking the fun out off the sport. alot off us injoy more slipping are dogs me more so than any. i just cant understand why trapping working lurchers for straight racing is intreseting not my thing. i understand coursing dogs and track dogs but working lurchers for the straight racing a bit daft in my eyes  . good luck with your upcoming events :luck: :luck:

Shane,

Thanks for offering traps but the lurchers at both birr and Shanes will be slipped. We did try traps on one occasion some years ago and quite a few good dogs were so unused to them that it was not really fair. I agree with Leanne that it creates a bit of a spectacle to see handlers and dogs get excited before slipping.

We decided to split the showing and racing ( racing Saturday) and Showing ( Sunday) because people didn't want to show their dogs immediately after racing and if we put the racing on after the showing it was running too late. We have given special fair rates so lurcher owners wanting to come both days can come for the price of one day by purchasing their ticket in advance.

There will be qualifiers for each competition - The Five Nations International Lurcher Championship (Final at Birr) and the Master Mc Grath International Challenge ( final at Shanes Castle) in the ROI, NI , Scotland, England and Wales. The first qualifiers are at Johnny Dicker's Show at Kilkenny on the 1st May and Ballywalter Game & Country Living Fair also on the 1st May. Next after that is Mourne Show on the 15th May. Others will be notified.

JUST MY OPINION IF TRAPS ARE USED QUITE OF THE WORKING DOGS THAT HAVE NEVER SEEN A TRAP AND THEIR OWENERS DONT HAVE ACESS TO A TRAP WILL BE AT A DISADVANTAGE

TRAPS?????? NO! NO! NO! and a thousand more NO'S. TRAPS, How dumb can you be and still breathe. Keep it the old traditional way. Are traps going to be used at every qualifying show? Those who have their dogs already trained to run out of traps are at an advantage. Alberts original post mentions nothing about traps. Why anyone would suggest it baffles me!. Let Albert and his team run it the way they have always run their events. Over the years they have proved beyond a shadow of doubt for organisation and support year in and year out they are the best this side of the water. Others have come and gone yet Seamus and Matt still run the best shows on a regular basis. Hey!!!! I guess you can gather i'm not for traps at Lurcher events. :teehee: :teehee:
