I took olive out for a walk and she was fine until on the way back, she had stopped and was lifting up her left back leg as if she was stood on lava, she then refused to walk so I had to carry her (Olive is quite heavy) I have done a physical examination and found nothing. But I can’t do an internal examination because I don’t have an X-ray machine in the house. All she wants to do is sleep, she usually wants to play or eat after a walk but not today. I have tried to offer her some food but she doesn’t want to have anything to do with food. She doesn’t want to feed the puppies all she wants to do is rest. What could it be? What should I do?

All my local vets are closed due to it being a Sunday.

Your vets will have an emergency number if you are concerned.

Could it be something as simple as gravel bunched up under her toes? Jimmy had this when we were out last summer, he stopped walking, then nibbling his foot and we could see fine gavel in his mouth, so we poured water over his foot until we could see no more gravel. That seemed to fix it for him. I know it could be a million other things, but thought I'd just throw this into the mix. Hope she's OK.

Is she still limping? Rosko (my previous Welshie) was really good at limping for hours after a minor paw injury as long as he thought you were watching! If he thought he was unobserved then the limp magically disappeared....

If it had been later in the year I would have suggested nettles - one of our dogs limps and lies licking her paws after running through them. If it seems to be the pad, check for tiny thorny bits from a weed (might need a magnifying glass but you know how sore it is if you get a tiny splinter in the skin).
If it's the leg, then hopefully she has just pulled a muscle.
All dogs are different - but with ours, if you gently take hold of the leg and make your way up and down it and over the paw, ours give you "the eye" when you get close to the area causing distress. Hope she recovers soon!

How is Olive now? Took the girls out this afternoon and there must have been all of half an inch of snow on the tracks  and Molly our Springer started limping and holding her paw up , had a look and there was a ball of ice in her pad ! This happened 3 times on the walk, goodness knows what she’ll be like if we get 8 inches of snow! :D Lily terrier wasn’t affected at all ! These doggies do worry you :( hope Olive recovers xx

Update: The vet has recommended rest because she presumes its a pulled muscle. I hope she recovers soon! She has had no walks today :( I feel so bad for her.

Poor Olive. Hope she feels better soon. Harri had his first walk in 3 days this morning - a very short one. It's bitingly cold here

Hope Olive mends soon :) It's cold here too - minus 6 when I left for work, felt colder when I went out with Jimmy an hour or so before that

Update: Olive has been a lazy pup, but she has been eating. no walks due to the snow but when it clears up she should be able to go for short walks.
