Olive the Miniature Schnauzer and Puppies Diary

1st March 2018

Well today has been fun! I walked Olive this morning (5.30 AM) it was freezing and the snow was nearly half way up my shins. The puppies went outside and the snow was very thick even after I had shovelled it so then they could do their business outside. I am trapped in now on the back door (Picture) and the front door also close. I have an empty fridge and only have pasta and rice bread in. Today Ollie has gone on a sleepover trial, because we want Olive to get used to not all them being there at the same time and it will be good for Ollie to get used to their home. I was very wary of doing this but I have grown to the idea because it will help Olive get over her motherly instincts. I have took Olive off of her anti-inflammatory meds because I don’t think she needs them due to the fact she is eating and walking fine, I have told the vet and she is okay with it but not 100%. Olive has been eating the snow she loves it, more than treats!

2nd March 2018

Today I had a great day, work closed and Olives back to her normal self :) The puppies have been out again today and the snow in the garden has melted a little but the snow on the road is still thick. I am also going on a long walk tomorrow morning with Olive’s friends, hope the weather holds together. We usually have a picnic but I’m not sure it will be a picnic type of day tomorrow :(

I had a sad phone call today. The dog we were looking at rehoming from Spain has been collected by its owner after a month of being in the shelter. The centre is very annoyed that it has took a month for the owners to find their dog. But I’m glad they have found her now and not when she is in the UK. I have also been looking and I’m going to wait a little while until summer as I’m returning with Olive for her to see the lovely lady that rescued her. I will be having a look then at the dogs and cats ;) for rehoming and deciding there and then who I would like because Olive can also meet the dog/s. I have done lots of research about adding another dog to my pack and were ready. I’m going to end up like a crazy dog lady :)

A few pictures of the puppies in the snow today enjoy! :)

Today was fun, Olive and I went for a picnic with our friends it was freezing. Also I only have 2 puppies now 2 have gone for good :( I’m so sad. Also I know there ‘too young ‘but they are fully weaned, and on solid foods. Also I made a breakthrough with Doris she learnt to sit :) We have friends over tomorrow, so there may be no pupdate sorry :(.

I’m so sad I only have 1 puppy Doris :( I have let the rest go. But it gets exciting from today onwards because I will be writing in Doris’ POV (go check out her diary). And Olive will be getting her own diary! One of the puppies Fudge went for a sleepover as a trial but we have decided for them to keep him and he didn’t stop howling all night, so I texted the new owner today and he is slightly put off by this as Fudge is fine in the daytime. I am ready to be given any of them back at a click of my fingers and I won’t mind :)

If Fudge is howling the whole night and as you say yourself, it was too early for him to go, the new owner must have the puppy in their bedroom for a few weeks. If they are in a crate even better, and the new owner can soothe/hush the puppy when he is feeling scared and lonely. We got our puppy at 6 weeks, also too early, but we did this as we could offer a better living environment than where the puppy currently was; otherwise we would have waited until at least 8 weeks.

Absolutely! He's clearly too young to cope with being alone at night.

Why are you letting them go so young? There's a lot more to 'parenting' than weaning, and they learn a lot from their littermates too.
I totally agree. We got our puppy too early but out of necessity. She did not come from a good breeding background or good home/living environment. However, we do think some of the issues we are having now are because she did not spend long enough with her littermates. She is not very sociable with other dogs and I don't think she really had a chance to learn bite inhibition before she came to us. This is one issue we have been battling with since she was around 9 weeks old. She is now 17 weeks and things are much better but it has been really hard work. She does not know how to behave around other dogs and fluctuates between being nervous and scared, and wanting to meet and greet but not knowing how to...... In hindsight, we could have left her where she was and let her be farmed out to a petshop at 6 weeks instead, but we thought we were doing the right thing. They learn so much staying with Mum and littermates; it's not just about being weaned. I hope the new owner has the commitment to deal with what may be around the corner.

They are considering taking him in the bedroom in his crate. But i am not and will not be asking for him back, he's settled in the day time just not at night.

They are fully weaned and we are 100% sure they will not have problems.

Can 2 days really make a difference? they are 2 days off being 8 weeks old.

I hope you take him back if they ask you to and provide them with some support during the early days.

It was you who said they were 'too young', though - and as mentioned, weaning is a very small part of the picture. Most mammals stay with their parents & siblings long after they're weaned.

This is Ollie, he has settled into his home and comfortable. But he has really greasy fur can anyone recommend anything for it?

What type of diet is the puppy on.
I have seen this with a yorkie in the past that was on a poor, wrong type of diet. He was changed to an all raw diet and the problem corrected itself!
