Hi, I recently (six days ago) rescued a 12-year-old cocker spaniel from a family who were moving back to Australia and were going to put him down. I have dealt with rescue dogs before, lived with them but this particular dog is showing signs that are concerning me, I would just like to know what people think and if they have any ideas to help solve the following:

1. He constantly licks me, my clothes, my bedding, basically anything he can see. What does this mean and how can I help to stop it?
2. The previous owners gave him 2 Bonio in the morning and then rice mixed with frozen vegetables and some wet food. I'm used to giving dogs a mix of dry biscuits and wet food cans twice a day. I'm afraid to change his meals and upset him even further, is the one meal deal acceptable? If not, what is the correct measurement of food to give him? How does 90g of small biscuits and two tins of dog food split between a day sound? He weighs around 13kg
3. The previous owners said that he wasn't vocal, but most of the time he seems to be unable to sit still and whining. Any ideas?
4. Any tips to stop him from peeing on the bed/in the house?
5. He doesn't seem to be eating the two Bonio in the morning.

Any help would be great, I understand he has only just moved into a new house with a new owner but I'd like to nip all these issues in the bud before they worsen, thanks in advance!

Poor little soul, must be wondering what on earth has happened to him, his whole life has changed and he must be so worried . You can’t expect miracles in 6 days so could take quite a while to settle him into a new routine . I’d try introducing some new food gradually and see if he’ll eat something a bit tastier. Frozen veg doesn’t sound very appetising . Was he on this specific diet due to health issues ? Is he ok on walks? If he’s peeing on the bed this could be nervousness . Did the previous owners say he did this before ? Sorry for all the questions but due to his age could he be incontinent ? Feel sad for the poor lad at his age and hope you can give him a few more years of happiness .

Oh blimey...poor soul's family has left him after dog's life time being together he is feeling totally lost at the moment.
So that licking whining, peeing, change of eating habits is all down to his emotional distress being left to live in new home with new people with all the new smells, habits, surroundings...nothing is what he has used to. Six days of new life is very short compared for 12 years what he has used to...so lots and lots of understanding and bonding is called for and basically you will have to start training and showing your ways of life.
I would not stress about the food thing at the moment, as long as he eats something...start with what they used to give if you are happy with it and gradually change and adjust what you see is best.
Maybe introducing new kind of treats to his diet that are more tempting than bonio is something that will take his mind off from his old family for time being. Try something 'natural' and 'smelly'...tripe stick/pizzle etc?
As for the 'accidents'...those will happen until he start feeling settled..so at the time being bonding will help for mental side of things and the 'physical' is more of 'puppy training' exercise..start from beginning and praise him when it works..and it is training for you too, for having to learn how his body work with the need for toileting.
Whining etc... try not to react to it, but otherwise talk to him A LOT during the day so he learns about you, gets less distress of his situation and the comfort from your voice will eventually make him feel less like crying..it just takes time.
