Sorry I can only agree with Judy and say try to adapt using coverings - it will be too difficult and stressful for the dog to adjust to your lifestyle- and you may find a more relaxed dog a pleasure to have as a houseguest 😀

Another suggestion is going to their place to dog sit- if of course it works for you

Could you politely say no as the dog doesn’t fit into your lifestyle so they can look for a more appropriate dog sitter?

It sounds like a difficult situation for all involved- have you thought of a crate in your bedroom with his bedding and a few comfort toys- so he is close but has his own space? I know he is old but may adapt to that easier than complete lock out when you are home.
