Hi

i adopted this little chap...he's a dwarf winter white russian hamster.

no one wanted him because he's a bit scarey (w00t) he runs at you screaming when ya go near him

he's lovely but he makes you jump when he suddenly screams (w00t)

once you pick him up he screams randomly but mostly token screaming like "the giant things got me HELP SCREAM!"

he's very fast at the moment and he was an unplanned adoption as we had an empty cage available and thought he wouldn't take up too much room and i have lots of experience with grumpy hamsters.

his name is HAL...

he's about the length of a matchbox...tiny but cute eh?

 oh hes lovely never seen a white one

i had russian hamsters for years.

the pet shop sold my mum 2 girls and guess what the 2 girls had babies hmmmm!!! not to sure if they were actualy both girls after that.

:- "

best pets iv ever had although they make a racket in the wheel at night. (w00t)

he will only be white during the winter months but will turn browny colour in the summer.

he's not getting a wheel as i don't believe in them...he's in temporary cage until tame but i have a huge more interesting one waiting once he's more handleable.

He is a little cutie and so pretty.

Does he actually bite when you handle him? I would like a hamster and have already acquired a Rotastak cage, but haven't decided which breed to get. Do you know which ones tend to be the best to handle?

Hal is just gorgeous

Lots of luck with him :luck:

hi no he doesn't bite and to be honest most screamers don't bite..they scream instead (w00t) biters just chomp without warning.

i've always found russians the nicest but i used to breed them and obviously mine were handled from the moment their fur was through so they were friendly.Have owned syrians before and some are really nice and some bitey to start with. never met one which couldn't be handled in the end but you need to be confident from the start.

a rotostack set up isn't really suitable for syrian hamsters (it is too small tube wise as syrians can grow quite big) so a dwarf like a russian/chinese or roborovski would be fine.

If possible house your new hamster in something a bit simpler than rotostack to start with because while you are taming it there is nothing worse than an angry hamster who jams itself into a pipe and won't come out, it prolonges the taming process a lot.

Aww he's really cute

I would drop him if i was holding him when he screamed though :b

 i nearly did earlier as he didn't scream when i first picked him up, then suddenly did it...i almost threw him up in the air (w00t)

the funniest thing is when he rushes at me screaming because at the time he has his mouth wide open so you can see his tiny sharp teeth...he looks very cross and really hilarious cos he's sooo small.

Aww isnt he just the sweetest little thing... he suits Hal too...

Thanks for the advice about the Rotastak not being suitable for Syrians. I know Syrians have to live alone, but can the dwarf ones you mentioned be kept in pairs?

see how you say you dont believe in a wheel can i ask why that is?

its been a long time since my last hamster 10years i think, we always had wheels in the cage and they always used it, along with a hamster ball for run of the house.

just wondered?

i don't beleive in wheels because personally i regard them as a lazy option for the owner, in that they can be stuck in a tiny cage and it's ok because they have a wheel and i find that hamsters who use wheels tend to display "circus" behaviour(or caged animal syndrome)...this is where they do certain things like run madly in the same spot and do back flips and such like.

personally i also loathe the hamster balls and feel they are cruel because you give the hamster no choice, if he's shoved in a ball he either sits there trapped or has to run...in my humble opinion it must be terrifying for some hamsters.

i prefer to provide my hamsters with a large cage and a varied, interesting and stimulating environment and plenty of free range time out of the cage to fulfill all his need for exercise..

The above is simply my personal opinion and my preferences are as stated.

thanks.
