Whiskey held in the mouth over the bad tooth, lots and lots of GOOD malt whiskey. Hot water bottle. I hate the dentist too. Mine was awful to me as a kid and I just can't go any more to any of them. :(

Orajel is excellent http://www.orajel.com/products/adult/toothache/max_gel.htm

BUT you can only use it for so long, I think a trip to the dentist is a must to get it sorted out properly - ask friends who can recommend a kindly dentist, there are lots of them about, and most practices have one who specialises in helping nervous patients :luck:

Only one thing that'lll sort your pain out Nina and I'm sorry but that'll be a dentist.

The pain if it's as bad as you say is probably due to an abscess under the tooth. To get rid of the pain you need to discharge the pressure from it, anti-biotics do this temporarily. Ultimately you need dental treatment, if you don't the abscess could well get bigger, track through the bone and will track it's way outside of the body. It has 2 directions it can travel, either into your mouth where it'll give you a bad taste and bad breath etc or if your unlucky it'll track outside your face leaving an ugly and permanent scar. If it fails to discharge outside of the body, it will continue to swell where it can become so severe that it'll close off your airway, you'll end up in A&E on IV anti-biotics and could end up with a tracheostomy. Another option is endocarditis (where the bacteria from the bad tooth settles on the heart valves) I'm sorry to put the fear of god into you like this but you simply can't sort this out on your own and the above scenarios are cases I encounter daily.

I know your scared but you've really, really got to do something about it, the pains there for a reason, that reason needs to be sorted out.

Whatever you do, DON'T put anything hot on the outside of your face to relieve the pain, it will encourage the infection to track there. Also DON'T exceed the recommended doseages of pain killers.

If your too terrified to go the dentists, ask to see your GP and tell them your anxieties, they may refer you to a hospital for sedation or to a dentist experienced with dental phobics. In the meantime they might be able to give you anti-biotics to give you pain relief.

Good post, funnily enough I was just coming back to suggest you emailed Jac (wild whippies) for up to date information from an expert!

Well i exceeded the medication dose back on Saturday i reckon as it said summat daft like 8 in 24 hours & i have had 3 packets in just over 48 :- "

I know i need a dentist BUT i cant do it.

Kill or cure & if it kills then atleast i'm not in pain any more :b

I really do need someone to just knock me out as i cant even get in the dentist without shaking & bawling like some half wit & before i even get in the chair i', gone out the door.

i've been curled up on the tarmac in works car park more than once in the last couple of weeks because of tooth ache.

Ibuprofen wasnt touching the pain.

Got cuprofen plus from the chemist and took paracetamol on top (pharmacists suggestion) and that works (sometimes not competely but makes it bearable) - also got antibiotics which may have helped too ... cant be sure as i havent lapsed on painkillers.

I did go to the dentist ... i'm waiting for a referral letter for the hospital so i know its temporary but i also know how much it hurts.

You know you have to go but in the meantime try at least to get some antibiotics from the doctors.

If it's any reassurance Nina, when you first go they'd be reluctant to do anything with you being so scared. If you can go knowing you won't be having anything done that may be helpful to you and you can at the least discuss arrangements for when you do go for treatment e.g. some can organise for you to have valium before you come for your appointment. Another option that many dentists are using these days is hypnotherapy. Try ringing NHS direct tomorrow to see if there's any dentists in your area that specialise in dental phobics (08454647) or have a look on this forum for a dentist in your area. Dental Phobics forum

Also this might be helpful Behavioural Techniques to overcome anxiety

Oh Nina you poor thing - nothing worse no sleep no food and now side effects as well as the pain - I can only sympathise - not advise - other than taking paracetamol every four hours and Nurafen every four hours alternatly so you are taking a dose of one or the other every two hours alternatly - NHS direct told me to do this.

:huggles: :huggles: :huggles: :huggles:

Sorry Nina, I've edited my previous post to include some self hypnosis techniques and stuff that might be helpful so check it out.

If your not registered with GP, get down to your local walk-in centre.

I'll be looking back tomorrow to see how you've gone on and if you haven't done anything I'm going to overload your inbox with nagging PM's and I'll haunt every post! :p

Gawd with friends like you who needs enemies (w00t)

I need to build myself up to it :sweating:

Gonna have a look at the hypnosis technique

Have you heard of oil pulling?

I do this every day and it has many health benefits, but people also report an improvement in toothaches.

It sounds weird, but it ia amazing. I do urge you to give it a try. It can't hurt. Also makes your teeth very white. You won't believe it.

Google it if you aren't familiar with it, and here is a link to a forum as well:

:( Please go to the dentist Nina - if you tell them you're nervous it's amazing how kind they can be and the pain will be gone within five minutes.

I've had an infection from a tooth go into my jaw bone and it's seriously not funny. It took weeks to recover and could have been extremely serious. I lost the tooth too. (And I was seeing a dentist regularly so imagine if I'd left it.)

Oh and I agree about NOT putting hot things against your face - it just makes the inflammation more angry and more sore and spreads the infection too.

Shove a dog up your jumper to cuddle in the chair and go to the dentist :huggles: :luck: (better make that a teddy as they probably won't allow a dog in the surgery :( )

:luck:

What sort of night have you had Nina? I hope you got some sleep - now gird your loins and do something about it today! - Please! :huggles:

Hi Nina,

How are you this morning. I am also PETRIFIED of the dentist. When I was little my dad used to threaten me with the dentist as he knew I was frightened of him and it has made me much worse as an adult. When I go to the dentist I have to take imodium as I get in such a state that my stomach churns and I need to keep running to the toilet with nerves :(

I have suffered from abcesses in my time and boy the pain! Maybe that is what you have as the poison will be going in to your bloodstream and making you feel terribly sick. I think with me as well as the needles it is the thought of having to sit in the chair and not be in control of the situation that makes me worse :- " I was meant to go for a check up in December but every week I keep saying to myself I better go make an appointment but here we are in March and I am still telling myself to make an appointment, it is true what other' s are saying the longer you leave it the worse it will get but I understand it is easier said than done :- "

Good luck and I hope all works out ok for you as I know how you are feeling and it is hell :huggles:

I have just found a dentist & made an appointment for 10.30am

I am so scared now, i feel physically sick but i had such a bad night i have been in agony.

I am sooo frightened i think i am going to pass out :(

Well i'm leaving now, i feel like i'm going to have a heart attack

If it weren't for the pain i would no way go.

I can see me doing a runner, i feel sick :(
