Whiskey held in the mouth over the bad tooth, lots and lots of GOOD malt whiskey. Hot water bottle. I hate the dentist too. Mine was awful to me as a kid and I just can't go any more to any of them.

Blimey after reading that i need the bottle of Whiskey :sweating: :sweating:wild whippies said:Only one thing that'lll sort your pain out Nina and I'm sorry but that'll be a dentist.
The pain if it's as bad as you say is probably due to an abscess under the tooth. To get rid of the pain you need to discharge the pressure from it, anti-biotics do this temporarily. Ultimately you need dental treatment, if you don't the abscess could well get bigger, track through the bone and will track it's way outside of the body. It has 2 directions it can travel, either into your mouth where it'll give you a bad taste and bad breath etc or if your unlucky it'll track outside your face leaving an ugly and permanent scar. If it fails to discharge outside of the body, it will continue to swell where it can become so severe that it'll close off your airway, you'll end up in A&E on IV anti-biotics and could end up with a tracheostomy. Another option is endocarditis (where the bacteria from the bad tooth settles on the heart valves) I'm sorry to put the fear of god into you like this but you simply can't sort this out on your own and the above scenarios are cases I encounter daily.
I know your scared but you've really, really got to do something about it, the pains there for a reason, that reason needs to be sorted out.
Whatever you do, DON'T put anything hot on the outside of your face to relieve the pain, it will encourage the infection to track there. Also DON'T exceed the recommended doseages of pain killers.
If your too terrified to go the dentists, ask to see your GP and tell them your anxieties, they may refer you to a hospital for sedation or to a dentist experienced with dental phobics. In the meantime they might be able to give you anti-biotics to give you pain relief.

If it's any reassurance Nina, when you first go they'd be reluctant to do anything with you being so scared. If you can go knowing you won't be having anything done that may be helpful to you and you can at the least discuss arrangements for when you do go for treatment e.g. some can organise for you to have valium before you come for your appointment. Another option that many dentists are using these days is hypnotherapy. Try ringing NHS direct tomorrow to see if there's any dentists in your area that specialise in dental phobics (08454647) or have a look on this forum for a dentist in your area. Got cuprofen plus from the chemist and took paracetamol on top (pharmacists suggestion) and that works (sometimes not competely but makes it bearable) - also got antibiotics which may have helped too ... cant be sure as i havent lapsed on painkillers.
I did go to the dentist ... i'm waiting for a referral letter for the hospital so i know its temporary but i also know how much it hurts.
You know you have to go but in the meantime try at least to get some antibiotics from the doctors.
