well, after being showered upon in the Lakes in a multi-coloured kagoul thing and a red jacket that attracts the bulls, I've asked Santa for my Christmas pressie 8)

I NEED a Barbour to keep dry AND look like a proper country girl

(which I most definately am not, since I had to hide behing a tree due to a ferocious :- " cow snorting at Ella, which my daughter and OH had nonchalantly strolled past ....do cows eat people ?)

There's a nice slim fitting ladies Utility Barbour, are the medium weights heavy/ are the lightweights not warm enough ? Has anyone got one they love? do you choose your normal size ?

BTW a young lad working in an outdoor clothing shop in the Lakes asked OH if he didn't feel ashamed with a dog wearing a coat when the other dogs were walking around with none ( bearing in mind it was lashing with rain )

The answer he got was a simple explanation that whippets don't have any fat to keep them warm and only one layer of thin fur ( and anyway, if our 'baby' feels the cold and hates the wet we're certainly not going to drag her around in the bad weather without a coat just to look 'macho' ) idiot!

Julie you should have got one in the LAKES..you were in perfect country for them... My hubby says he could have recomended one of his suppliers in Coniston itself...

Im not keen personally..I had one for years...they are not WARM ..UNLESS you get one with a fleece and then they are quite heavy coats...and you have to re-wax them regularly. I much prefer my horsy type jackets for outdoor wear and working at the farm..with fleeces that zip out...

Barbours aren't the best for walking, Julie.

Better off getting a Musto - lots of different styles to choose from and designed to keep out all the nasty weather

ooh, thanks girls, I hate heavy coats that are not even warm, off to search for Musto !

Don't do Mustos myself - I go for lightweight, breathable, waterproof and windproof - sailing kit is good as they have cuffs that don't let the wet in! They are also more affordable than the horsey stuff! As is the high viz kit used on the railway. That is very good too!

Waxed jackets make your hair go all greasy. And don't buy the hat either - you will be able to cook chips in the wax. Also, they go mouldy if they are lift hanging damp for any length of time.

But if you feel you really must have one - well, who am I to stop you spending lots of money?

I love my cheap old Regatta.

Best wishes.

Yep I have a Regatta too...with a seperate fleece that goes inside...

its lightweight in the rain...in summer months too...

there are some really nice riding coats too of similar design

Try looking at Rideaway Julie online just for some ideas ..Ive bought from here,.

...wax jackets smell too  :- "

Do you have a 'Go Outdoors' near to you? I'd get a Gortex jacket (fully breathable and waterproof). They are not cheap but they last for years, are lightweight, and are the best waterproofs around (in my opinion). Lots of the outdoor gear manufacturers make their coats using Gortex...you just have to pick a brand you like the look of i.e. Berghouse, Mountain Equipment, Montane, Rab, Lowe Alpine, Marmot, Sprayway (the list is endless). Don't go for a Barbour what ever you do.......at least not for hill walking
