I know that this can get heated (the speyed bitch thread blew me away a tad) BUT for those who havent had dogs (whippets) long, or in some cases never before i think its good to get the different perspectives.

Its all good information to think about and then obviously decide personally what you think is best for your dog.

my old gsd had both retained :( our vet advised to let him mature a little, and shadow was done at about 20mths. i must admit, up until he died, he was very puppyish :D so perhaps it could have waited even longer, but for his sake it was the right choice.

i'd say between 18mths and 2yrs would be a good age, but it depends on how your boy developes. you and your vet know him best.

:luck:

-_-   -_- do you and beejay do a double act?  :clown: i wondered how long it would take for her to pm you too!

(w00t) Why do you have to be so rude, can 2 people not have the same opinion (which is opposing yours) without being jumped on?

My 2 are both entire males (both have 2), have never strayed and don't have any problems with them being over-sexed or anything else. But IMO if one is retained would have him castrated when he is around 18months old.

actually my reply was because of her sarcasm if you care to notice!!...i can stick up for myself cant i???i have never had any problem with peoples opinions!...and i think you will find it is them that jump on everyone else actually...

As one door closes another one opens :- "

I agreee totally with that , and as for the Vet always knowing best :- " , not too sure about that one , They dont seem happy unless they can spay , neuter at will IMO ;)

What ever any one desides about de -sexing your dogs PLEASE wait until they have reached maturity at least . thankyou

I agree Jo. opinions are our own its not as though we're saying this is what must happen. Anyways.

If you are definately getting him castrated then I would suggest speaking to your vet, they wont steer you wrong.

Whitecross, having read through your posts over the last few days,I would say that it's you

who is sarcastic,& arrogant,& downright bloody rude,& so self opinionated that you can't cope with anyone else disagreeing with you.You just seem to thrive on stirring up trouble,& the above reply to Jo is a classic example!!!

On the subject of castration,i'm one of the insane club,I can't see the reason why anyone would want to have their dogs bits chopped off other than for medical reasons. But that's up to them,i suppose

I have always had male dogs(who've been used at stud) & they've never pee'd in the house or been over sexed,& have certainly never wanted to stray after bitches.

Personally,i think 7 months is far too young to have a dog done,i would wait till he's at least 18 months old.

-_- -_- just to clarify again!!! -_- -_- ...i never said vets always know best....what i actually said was that it is always advisable to listen to their advice!...the reason why arguements start is because people do not actually read what is written....i do not want an arguement i am just giving my opinion so leave me alone however i am not putting up with sarcasm which as i have said is the reason i made that comment -_- -_- so i will continue to stick up for myself...or is that not allowed?

I think everyone should all make their own informed decisions and stop talking about it now as it is a debate which with always lead to arguments

I have to say at the risk of getting jumped on that Kaz (whitecross whippets) has never been anything but polite and friendly in all the conversations I have had with her, she has asked me for advice on a number of occasions and has taken on board what I have said with politeness and gratitude, I therefor feel that if she is coming across as rude it is because she feels the need to fight against long standing members of the board, she gave her oppinion not to suit all granted but it should be left at that, this topic is not one which will ever be agreed on.

Sorry just my oppinion :)

just to clarify again...i never said anyone was insane i said that some people may find the idea of only selling pups that cannot be neutered was an insane idea!

just another example of people twisting what i have said so they can have a go!

Like i said,i'm insane, as i wouldn't sell one of my puppies to anyone who wanted to spey or castrate just for the sake of making their lives easier

from my point of view this has opened my eyes a lot ,i said you should talk to the vet ,they do know more than others on here as they are trained in their field we are not, you may have bred a few litters but your not trained like a vet i myself had a different point of view on another thread and was told to p*** o** which i could not believe just for having a different view to others ,what i would say is i think it bad for some breeders to have such strong views on here ,when pups are sold to very good homes then let the owners decide whats best for their dog then ,otherwise the breeders will just get themselves a bad name which isnt good ,you cant sell a pup and then think you can have a say in everything they do with it , im not getting into a fight we all have a lot in common which is our love of whippets

dawn its not how long people have been involved with whippets, its about people having a different views i said about seeing the vets as they know more than us ,but here we go again ,im not into fighting dawn so i wont reply again as i can see its going to end up like the other thread (w00t)

please, no more arguing :(

for the most part, we ALL agree with animals being mature beforehand

we ALL love our animals

at the end of the day, each to their own. if someone is going to neuter, no matter what anyone says, lets not push them into making a bad decision by us squabbling.

surely, whichever way it goes, its better that an INFORMED opinion is made?
