to give my opinion- my mums lab- 'scotty' is now 15 months, he is planned to be a stud as he's an excellent example of the breed. but if he wasnt going to be a stud dog then he would be castrated around now- as he's FULLY developed

and is starting to be very naughty- ie- escaping from his kennels and running around our village in search of a girlfriend- broke through the mesh! and launched himself over 6.5ft wall......

thank god we found him- mum was going to take him to vets the next day, but then we saw his handsome good looks and decided to stick to the plan we'd made for him :sweating:

my Mum in laws flat coated retriever was done at 6 months- and is a loony- never grew up and is a very large and powerful 'puppy' still at 6 years old, i would never castrate a dog at that age, i recently had to assist a gsd castrate and i was fuming- he didnt even have proper ones yet! so sad really.

Our vet recommended 7 months. What do you think?

Although he has only one testicle and I hope it won't lead to complication.

I think we should stick to the point. This neutering is clearly being done for medical reasons and Veronyc only needs to know when, so the other arguments aren't relevant.

So please lets avoid the arguing. Two threads in one day like this is really too much.

Every flat coat I've met is bouncy, bouncy, bouncy like tigger I thought that that was a breed characteristic.

But if someone wanted to keep their whippet pupplike ........................ I can see how it would appeal to some people (not saying Veronyc does) and that's what my point was in my original post when I said that factor should/could be taken into account.

If people for example wanted to stop their male dog from developing 'male' characteristics like say with some breeds inter male aggression in a house, then having them castrated at 6 months is more likely to achieve that. Stop a problem before it develops. I'm thinking of certain terrier breeds that breeders say can't be kept together if entire.

I would think the most important thing for the dog/bitch is that it is in a loving home for life regardless of whether its owner decided to spey/castrate.

At the end of the day surely it is up to the individual owner what they choose to do as it is their dog.

Just an opinion from your average pet owner who is not planning on having her puppy neutered by the way unless there is a medical problem which I think is the reason the original poster asked in the first place.

LOL Beejay! suppose they are mad naturally- but he's quite scary sometimes, very nervous- so sometimes aggressive.

we all have different experiences in life and our opinions are based on them.we learn through our own experiences and so we tend to think we are right.but someone else might have a different experience than you and so they will base their opinions on their own expreiences.thats why we differ about different subjects.i enjoy lively discussion and im always open to new ideas and opinions.i learn something new every day and i try not to be close minded about any topic despite my experiences.after all someone elses might have relevance to me and if i didnt listen then i wouldnt learn. ;) but please everyone keep one thing in mind, treat everybody how youd like to be treated, with courtesy and respect.if someone disagrees with you then let them!they are allowed to after all!i remember ages ago a man said hed had 25 years experience breeding dogs, but someone else (who was far more successful in the ring and at breeding top quality dogs)said yes,he might have had 25 years in the game ,but hes just had one years experience hes repeated 25 times!time doesnt make you an expert, but your experiences will help you to make your own mind up. now lets all play nicely folks! :D

Right I want to go now but experience tells me that although things seem to have quietened down for the moment, they will kick off again late tonight so I am closing this thread.

Pleas do not start another similar thread.
