Broken leg and confining

Hi all,
Wilbur has broken his leg, vet says he has to be caged which I understand,
He hates cages, any tips on how to settle him,
I've converted under stair for him is it just let him get over it or is there anything people use to make life eas9

I got my pup used to a crate by giving her comfy bedding and feeding meals in there and Kong's, chews, you name it so that she understood the cage was a good place!
How long does he need to be caged for? Poor thing!
Other important thing is to not let him out - (if he is allowed out time for wees/poos?) - if he's wingeing or barking because he'll think that gets him what he wants, freedom! Just ignore when he's noisy and praise when quiet.

He’s a six month old lab but big (30kg)
I thought that might be the case,
Hoping that as he is a bit low he will settle easier in there

As your pup wont be allowed to have baths, get some grooming wipes pets at home sell some. Also if you have a kong this would be a good thing for your pup!

Poor thing spending this fun puppy stage in a cage! How did it happen?

I agree about the grooming wipes, I have some, they're very handy between baths!
It's good he has a Kong, little tip, if you stuff it and freeze it it can keep him occupied a bit longer!

There's all sorts of games/tricks you can teach him, and tiring him out mentally will help a lot. If you google something like 'how to entertain your dog when he's on crate rest' you should find plenty. Also look for 'interactive toys' Nina Ottosson do a great range . They are expensive, and there's the risk your dog might master some in 5 minutes, but might be worth it if he's driving you up the wall. Have a look at Kong Genius or K9 Collectables too. If he's kibble-fed, you could use games like these for most, or even all, of his meals so you don't have to worry about him gaining weight through too many treats and lack of exercise.

You might want to look at calming supplements, Adaptil pheromones, and so on. In extremis, your vet might even be able to prescribe a mild sedative - I know someone who needed this when her dog was on crate rest after breaking his neck.

I second what @JudyN recommended, games and tricks are a must!
As she said there's probably loads of info on it and I think there are books on brain games for dogs

Oh, I saw a cool thing on Amazon the other day, it's called a Lickimat, it's a textured rubbery mat that you can spread things like peanut butter (xylitol free) on and it helps relax them and keep them occupied!
Only thing is you'd need to keep an eye on him, being a Lab and a pup he might want to chew it when he's finished licking stuff off it!
