Hi a brief overview on him; british bulldog, he’s around 2 years old, a rescue with not much background information, slightly overweight but otherwise totally healthy (vet visit around 3 weeks ago).
So no problems throughout the day, he ate his tea around 5pm and he was doing great until around 7pm when I got home from dropping a friend off home (myself, partner & friends have been in & out of the house all day with the dogs) I noticed he didn’t greet me in his usual manner but I brushed this off and greeted him instead.

Fast forward 20 minutes and we’re running & playing in the front garden before ‘chill out time’ again with no problems at all, seemed his usual self.
Since we came back into the house (he had a treat after playtime) he has had some white foam around his mouth & around 10-20 minutes later he been sick 3 times (2 blobs & 1 pile) with the same white foam - no food, bile or anything other. (Over a 30 minutes period)
He has obviously then taken to drinking water (monitored so he doesn’t have too much) and has produced more drool than usual.

He has also been excessively grooming his front paws - there doesn’t appear to be anything stuck, cut, irritating him although they are now red & wet from his grooming.

It has taken him around 2-3 hours to settle down from this first taking place, he is now asleep and seeming ‘normal’.

I don’t have any means to get him to a vet’s until my partner gets home in the morning with the car, I’m just looking for advice (ideally from a veterinary perspective if possible) regarding his health, what to give him, how I can help him, if I should be seriously concerned etc. (I have put him on a complete food ban for at least 12 hours to see if his stomach settles - thankfully it’s nighttime).

I’m hoping he has just played a little too hard before bed and got himself worked up too much as he now doesn’t seem to be doing anything out of his usual routine.

I really appreciate you taking the time to read this & hopefully he just has an upset stomach and will be back to his bouncy self in the morning *fingers crossed*, thank you.

Can I check - is it ONLY white foam he has vomited?

I'm not a vet.

The paw licking could indicate pain, is his tummy tender if you press on it? What was the snack he had? If it was fatty could it have triggered a bout of pancreatitis?

But it also could be a mix of stomach acids and saliva, just from an empty tummy. If it was that, I'd actually be tempted to give little something to eat, probably a carbohydrate, to give his tummy something to work on. Carbs are slower to digest so shouldn't overload his system. Mashed potato or boiled rice maybe? I'd start with a very small amount, like a tablespoonful and if he keeps that down give him another in 15 minutes.

he doesn’t appear to be in any pain, he has let me fully examine his stomach, feet & mouth to check for any abnormalities but nothing seems different although he has let off some nasty smelling farts.

His snack was one of his usual ‘bacon treats’ (bakers brand). To my knowledge- I have also asked my partner & friend he hasn’t had any food that isn’t for him - no human food.

Both dogs get 3 meals daily 9am, 1pm & 5pm on a raw feed diet & have been doing well on it for around 8 months. I don’t think he is hungry but I’m currently boiling some rice to see if that helps.

I really appreciate you taking the time to read & reply to me Joanne - thank you. My dogs mean so much to me & I was just out of my mind when it all started.

It's not necessarily directly related to this issue, but 5pm to 9am is quite a long time between meals. I like to give some carbs last thing to avoid hunger pukes in the morning (a bonio type biscuit might even be enough to do it).

In any case, please let us know how you all get on.

I will definitely update you in the morning & I really do appreciate you taking time to reply to me about him.

I agree it is a rather long time, he was originally on a 7pm evening meal when he first arrived with us but he was toileting in the house throughout the night even after going for a walk around 8pm and toilet break before bed. We discussed this with the rescue he came from and they advised moving his feed time to 5pm as that was the time they fed him and they had no toilet problems. Since this move he hasn’t had accidents through the night.
Im going to consult with the vets in the morning so this is something I will bring up with them also

That's a fair point about the toileting. An alternative, if you need to consider one, is to feed him later so he can hold until morning.I

And if you want to be sure it's his last meal that causes him to toilet at a particular time, add a few kernels of sweetcorn. That'll show which meal produces which poo!

The corn idea is a great one thank you, I’ll give that a go.

So throughout the night he’s done really well. It had taken him a little time to get settled but he had a nap with nothing out of the ordinary happening until atound 1.30am he had gotten up and was wondering around so out for toilet time and same again at 4.45am. He hasn’t done this for quite some months but I assume with his stomach issues earlier he just needed the toilet. His poos were solid & didn’t have anything in there that shouldn’t have been - thankfully.

My vets doesn’t open for another hour but I’m taking him there today anyway just for a health check to be sure so I will update you on his progress later today

I'm glad he had a good night, you must be feeling relieved too. Good luck at the vets, please let us know what they say. It all helps us build knowledge.

Oh me too, thank you it really does mean a lot to me that you’ve taken time to respond.

Thank you, he’s booked in for 12.30 so hopefully I’ll know more then, I will certainly come back on and update you on the outcome oh his appointment

Hello I’m back with an update - my apologies on the delay.
So he is a little too fat (my fault - too many treats) which caused him to overwork himself causing the first bout of foam around his mouth. The vet said he most likely swallowed some of this foamy saliva (which can be dangerous) causing him to be sick again & produce the excess foam & saliva.

She said his paw grooming is probably his was of comforting himself after the situation & possibly help to settle his stomach.

I have been advised to keep his boisterous playing to a minimum until he looses some weight & he is going back in 4 weeks for another health check and to check his weight progress but his lungs are healthy and he passed her overall examination so that put my mind at ease so much but now to work on his summer body lol.

Thank you again for your advice over the past 24 hours, it really has helped me through & give him the best care I can.
All the best from Luca (the fat man himself), Pudding (my other bully) & myself

Thank you for the update - and good luck with the diet!

Ditto! I'm sure we'd all love to see some pics of Luca and Pudding 😁

Thanks for feedback, and good news that all is do-able and not anything that can't be helped.
