If possible I'd go along without Buster next week and see if you are happy with the class, the trainer and the methods they use.

Unfortunately (as you've already found out) some trainers are still stuck in the Barbara Woodhouse era.

Look for kind, reward-based training - make sure the dogs and owners look as though they are enjoying it.

Good luck with Buster's op - he should be fine after a couple of days :luck:

Thanks Feefee. I have looked at their website and they state they only use positive reinforcement, and choke chains, slip leads and harsh handling are NOT acceptable. I just want to thank everyone for their advice, and i will keep you all updated on both mine and busters progress. (and hopefully get some more pics up!)

Just taken buster to the vets for his neutering, hes the only dog that i have ever seen pull in to a vets!! Our old dog would be dragging the other way! think he was helped along by a cat in a basket that had just gone in before us :- " . Whilst we were waiting for the vet nurse to take him in he met a very laid back Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and they sniffed each other and there was no snapping etc. I was so proud, but then when the vet called the CKCS in and it walked away Buster barked! So now its the waiting game, im goin to ring up at 1.30 and see how he is. We were going to start the new obedience class tomorrow but i think it should wait until next week.

im sure Buster will be just fine................ :luck: :luck:

There was something very odd about the follow up which showed her happily mixing with other dogs.  It looked to me as though it was in their garden and possibly their own other dogs (although it hadn't been mentioned they had other dogs).  If anyone watches it tonight can you see what you think - maybe it was just me     I know the programme is very heavily edited and very selective in what they show, though.

Yes I was puzzled by that too, very strange.

Yep I thought that was weird. I have a dog aggressive dog and there is no way he would be like that around dogs he didn't know if he had been treated the way they showed in the show. Mind you, I think the whole program is crap, only watch it to wind myself up :p how can you expect to 'cure' a dog like that in 4 days!

Just taken him back in for his after care and its official Buster enjoys the vet! even the vet said he maybe doesn't remember me!! he is doing very well though he was a bit quiet last nite, probs just the anesthetic wearing off. Whilst in the waiting room Buster was whining and barking at the other dogs, but they just ignored him. Bless him lol

glad he's doing well after losing his precious plums (w00t)

Starting our training classes today. im really looking forward to it. I rang them up to book him in and she sounds lovely, she said to make sure to bring plenty of treats! i will fill everyone in on how we got on tomorrow.

Good luck with Buster, glad the op went well. Do let us know if you see any vast improvement. :luck:

good luck Rach & Buster  :luck:

Let us know how it goes. Just remember to be patient - worthwhile results take time.

Well omg, last nite was a nite mare! took buster in to the place and all he did was bark his head off, so i let him sniff around some of the dogs, (who were mainly pups) and he was fine with them. Their were about 15 -20 dogs there and 4 trainers. Buster was the oldest dog there. We started doing a little bit of heel work, which was difficult as buster was more interested in the other dogs than the treat  . Eventually he started to quieten down a little bit and the trainer talked me through some of the ideas such as turning him away when another dog comes and also shouting his name really loud. Which was embarasing but if it gets results im willing to do anything :b Also he said that all the family have to dominate him otherwise he will be the type of dog that will growl etc when he doesn't get his own way. i have this afternoon off so it will be spent trying some of the tricks i was shown last nite.

well done rach & buster...............im sure with more training Buster will improve, keep going :luck:

Thanks for asking. We went for our walk/training sesh yest afternoon, and hes started to get used to the leave and take it command. (for when i am giving him a treat etc) though sometimes he gets a bit confused. And i used the treat by my leg to get him to walking to heel but he kept nipping my hand so i reverted to the turn round whenever the lead goes taught and he started to walk well with lots of praise from me. Then it came to the crunch we met another dog, my stupid next door neighbour and her springer so i took buster in to a gate way and started again with the "take it, leave it" and he didn't notice the other dog til she came running up shouting is he on the lead?! as if after 3 weeks and little training i would have him off the lead  so then of course we had the excitement and barking as usual and i found it hard to get his attention back on to me! We will do half and hour again tonight, and then hes got the vets to check on his wound from the neutering. He sulked with me last nite after i told him off for mouthing which was quite amusing.

So we are having plenty of fun together to say the least lol :teehee:

sounds as if your working really hard with him, im sure it will all pay off in the end, guess you just have to keep doing the training with him, he will grasp what is expected of him eventually :)

and tell him from me...............not to sulk :- "

Just got back from my hols, and my sis informed me that buster is getting on a lot better with other dogs, hes also been a lot calmer and happy to sniff with other dogs. However yesterday we went for a walk around the lake which was lovely but on the way around we met another dog. He seemed a lovely fellow and there was no snarling etc from either dog, so we allowed them to sniff eachother. Then out of nowhere Buster bit the other dog. I was mortified, and so grabbed him by scruff and lifted him away. The other dog yellped and there was a small scratch though it could have been a lot worse. So i apologised to the woman who said it was ok but it certainly is NOT  I think its time that we did buy him a halti and I am hoping that perhaps John at the rescue will allow me to socialise buster in the paddock obviously with a muzzel. How do you know which halti is best or do you think that i should take buster with me to the pet shop so they can help me fit one?

im so sorry to hear what happened rach............you must have been so shocked :(

im sorry, im no expert on these matters, but im sure someone can give you some advise about fitting a halti.

dont be down hearted to much, im sure things will get better

:huggles:

Starting to wonder what i have let myself in for with buster. He is perfect with us in the house but mouths a little bit which we always reprimand him for. However yesterday two of my mams friends came along, first wsa a lady and buster was fine with her. Her other friend is an elderly gentleman who is very nice. Buster jumped up at him, and so mam reprimanded him, but then he started to growl and bear his teeth my mams friend bent down to stroke him and he bit him. So he got put outside, but we are now worried about whether he will bite again. We are very reluctant to take him back to the rescue as he is a lovely dog but forgets himself sometimes! i dont know if its just cos hes still young and puppy like or if it is goin to carry on in this manner/
