After reading posts on here I decided to get some chicken wings for the dogs. They have never had them before. Well, Hebe took about 2 minutes to crunch hers up, a bit worrying as I'm sure some went down whole (w00t) . Scrumpy took a while to realise it was edible & not a new toy but she ate it eventually. Rafferty hadn't got a clue & just stood there looking at it & wagging his tail at it :b By this time the other 2 were trying to get his so after a bit of growling, he decided to bury it under a cushion :x

How often can they have these? Is it once a week, one a day or what?? Don't want to overdo it.

The girls obviously enjoy them so how often is o.k. for them? I'll have to give Raffy something else, he's not very adventurous when it comes to food. He looks at me like "Are you mad??" if I put raw food in his bowl

P.S. I did move the one under the cushion, just in case I forgot & it turned up again in a few weeks down the back of the settee :x :x

Mine have chicken wings every day for breakfast or turkey neck chunks as an alternative. Some of them actually scrunch them up and chew bits off, others just seem to give them a couple of chews to crush the bones before swallowing them. Either way they have not come to any harm!

I have always been under the impression that chicken bones were best avoided, can't they splinter into quite sharp fragments that can lodge in the throat etc?

Yes when cooked,

give raw, when been frozen for 24 hours, dogs love em.

Chicken necks do not really have a bone to speak of, it's mainly a gristle, in any case poultry for table is slaughtered at about 8 weeks, so their bones are not as hard as they would if they were adults. I sometimes feed necks everyday as a main feed, then we have a break for a week or so. Sometime I feed other stuff and give a neck each just to clean their teeth.

As far as Raffy goes; make a game out of it, dangle the neck in front of him and when he grabbs it play a little tug-o-war. He will soon become interested in chewing on it and eating it. I had several they needed a bit of encouragement, others tried to swallow them whole. But in the end everybody learns to munch on them :)

Welcome to K9  Have a whizz around our FAQ section - you'll find lots of talk on chicken wings and many other subjects :) which may set your mind at rest.

J.T: I give mine a chicken wing each about every other day or at least a few times a week. I don't there's a hard and fast rule - whatever you feel like! Every day won't harm them, and they'll have superb teeth!

Alfie has 2 occasionally 4 chicken wings every day, sometimes a piece of Oxtail as a change but usually chicken wings every... single... day... :x

Oscar and Kobi both enjoy their chicken wings too - for breakfast - a couple each

I just have to say 'chicken wings' in our house and they both scuttle towards their feed bowls.

Thanks everyone, I'm sure the lurchers will be glad to know they can have another one today. :D

Seraphina- I will try that with Raffy later, when the curtains are shut. The neighbours suspect that I'm nuts as it is, if they see me playing tug of war with a bedlington and a bit of dead chicken, well............ (w00t)

Ok, I've gone out and bought some chicken wings and necks for my lot (w00t) . I've been thinking about taking the plunge for a while. A few questions. Where do you buy yours from? I looked in Pets at Home, not paying £6 for 2kg. Got the same amount from a local independant pet store for £3.50. I'll check out the butchers next, lots of little shops in Norfolk still. How do you introduce them for the first time? Leave 'em to get on with it? (w00t) Hold onto one end so they go slow? I have the 5 girls. The Terrierist at 11, then Whippets from 7 years to 5 months. Thanks.

Tesco do packs of approx 14 fresh wings for about £1.28. I think I just gave Alfie his first wing and let him 'get on with it' :sweating: Even now he will only crunch the top bit the rest goes down whole  :teehee:

I get mine from a local butcher 25p a lb  . To begin with just give the tiny end ,to give them an idea of what to do :- " then the middle and then the whole

India and Harvee still just have the end and middle together  and the rest have the end bit or a whole one

Juley, the first time both Chloe and Frankie tried them they both took ages, just licking them and sniffing at first. I didn't chop them up, just gave them the whole thing - they've got their teeth to chop them up! I just put one in their bowls and let them get on with it. You'll soon find that they rapidly get faster at eating them, when they know how yummy they are! Frankie now has two every day as part of his breakfast. I pay nothing for my wings, i've found a butcher who lets me have them for free. I also get turkey necks and other turkey bits like kidneys :x for nothing too! When i did pay for them at another butchers it was 29p a lb, which would equate to about £1.50 for 2kg, so Pets at Home is an absolute rip off! Im sure the butchers will be your best bet.

I have to admit i was nervous giving Evie her first chicken wing and i think she was about 6 months when i plucked up the courage to give her one, she has one every other day and loves them. :p

I cut the wing tip off for Gracie 11 weeks she has a good old crunch and it's gone then goes to see what Evie is munching :- " , think I will have to start giving Gracie a bit more soon :p

The more they have the quicker they get at eating them, go for it and give it a try

When my 2 were pups I introduced them to chicken wings straight away (at about 8-10wks) - I just gave them the tip as obviously their teeth aren't big enough then they went onto the tip and the middle joint then eventually when they were big boys they had them whole  Its a great way to introduce a dog to the idea of weating them.

Most dogs seem to know what to do mine crunch them all up so although it looks whole the bone is completely smashed up inside. Never had a problem and bones are the absolutely best way to get calcium in its correct balance into your dog, so really important for young dogs.

Mind have chicken wings every day and its the same in my house as soon as I say 'chicken wings' all eyes are on me ... and the kitchen work-top!!

I get mine from a local farm shop, they sell big bags of wings for £2 for about 25 I think - and they're free range birds so I am pretty lucky. otherwise I'd buy tesco.

Couple of years ago I gave handfull of chicken necks to my bitch who was nursing a litter at that time. I fed her in the kitchen, The pups were about 4 weeks old and were in the back room. Little while later I walked into the puppy room and nearly had a heart attack as each pup had a neck and was munching on it with a gusto! They were ripping the flesh off, and crunching the gristle with their little jaws. After I calmed down, I realised that the mum probably knows best and if she decided it is OK it is fine with me. I just watch that they do not try to swallow them whole. But even when once or twice that happened they just gulped it down and it did not seem to cause any problems. I am sure it helps them to exercise their gums, maybe that is why my pups so far never had any problems cutting their teeth.

Well, they have all had a wing except Lily ( I couldn't bring myself to let her have one :b ). She just had the meat I cut off for her. They all chewed them well and no-one had a problem with the new taste  . It was a bit nerve racking though, feeding raw bones! I need a nice cuppa now (w00t)
