Taz loves chicken wings, but gobbles them down so fast he doesn't chew them properly.  A couple of times he's coughed/sicked up little bits of bone after eating one (sorry :x ), so I got scared and haven't given him any more.
Does anyone else's dog do this, and have they ever suffered any ill effects?

Hold the neck or wing so he cannot swallow it. Get him to bite on it. Some people get a hammer and bash the necks flat. The necks do not have any sharp splintering bones so it should not be problem. :luck:

Thanks, I'll try that :)

cant get zeb to eat necks, i had to buy a 2kg bag from the pet shop as the butcher would not let my have any. :b

Really fuzzy dog. If i give him a raw carrot it has to be peeled or he well leave it. :- "

I'm just double checking that you know they should always be frozen for at least 24 hours before thawing out and feeding, as you say you got them yesterday and tried to feed at tea time yesterday. Just being cautious, they may have been frozen when you bought them, I don't know. I always take them out of the freezer and cover them with boiling water to thaw them.

Annie loves wings but I always cut the sections up for her and give her the 3rd joint the wing tip whole. Alfie occasionally has a wing tip but he's not overly impressed with raw meat, he's very picky with food and doesn't eat much at all, but Annie is just a greedy guts. :D

no need to freeze chicken, the defrosting method is actually more dangerous as the boiling water will part cook them it is only beef that is frozen to be super safe

I give Moss wings two or three times a week for her breakfast. She eats them slowly and they do help a lot to keep her teeth clean.Like some others, I was lead to believe that the freezing process only applied to beef. There was some discussion about it yonks ago on K9.

Tanya. I'll be glad to eat some of your doggies left overs  :)   just to help you out of course. Sirloin steaks  (w00t) . Yes please.

Always hungry

LAMPINGMAN

would you like me to bring a load when im next over? will happily get a load if you want? cant promise it will be sirloin tho??? always have bones and meat tho?

hi, After reading last billinghurst book he seens to say not to give bones to a dog big enough to swallow them whole. wings to small dogs like chis, necks and lamb ribs to medium dogs like whippets. mine are not keen on chicken carcases but try breast of lamb from butchers its cheap and bones HAVE to be chewed, its a good introduction for them  jan

He will only eat any meat if it has been cooked and having years ago lost a yorkie that got in some ones bin and swallowed a raw lamb bone whole and died because of it I would never give any of my dogs lamb bones

William will eat the wings if you bash them with a hammer and then cut it into tiny and I mean tiny pieces and mix it in with cooked meat

Id never thought of bashing the necks or wings with a hammer. thanks for the tips - Oscar and Kobi had their first duck neck/giblets yesterday - Kobi loved it - but strangely enough Oscar wasnt so fussed.

I could have bashed them with a hammer if Id known . :D

If you bash the wings with a hammer you are not going to get the dental benefit! When they smash the bones up with their teeth is when the jaw and teeth is really working and help remove plaque etc.

Archie will only eat them at room temperature too - fussy little man

A Yorkie could not swallow a whole rib bone which is good for chewing and teeth cleaning it makes no odds if its lamb or chicken it is the size of the bone in relation to the size of dog and if they are inclined to bolt their food instead of chewing it. As with all feeding there is a risk dogs can choke on dry food and of course bloat. jan
