Yesterday my butcher gave me a bag full of chicken wings for the dogs only one problem my dogs are not keen on raw meat.

I tried them with some last night before they had their teas so I knew they would be hungry 3 ate them and 3 wouldn't.

Bandit ate his which surprised me as he has never even sniifed at raw meat before he refuses to even look at it Rosie ate hers and the walking dustbin of a setter ate hers and went running to OH to tell him how good they were and please can I have another mum wont let me :- "

Tegan tried hers and spat it out and wouldn't try again Owen thought I was trying to poison him and William burried it in his bed he is a funny thing about what he eats he doesn't eat bones or any sort of dog treats in fact the only thing I can giv him as a treat is ham or sausages.

I don't want to feed them regullary just as occasional treats when the butcher has an exess of them (they were free because he had loads).The question is how do I get the reluctant ones to eat them I don't want to starve them to get them to eat them as I need to get more weight on William ready for crufts anyway

try cutting them up ..my blue eats his whole but ollie wont eat his unless it been cut up into at least in three pieces :thumbsup:

Mine have had chicken wings wince puppyhood, without any problems. Not sure how you could tempt them to eat raw if they dont seem to like it. Like Nicky says - I cut Oscars up down the joint - he prefers them like that - but Kobi has his whole - as it slows him down eating it a bit.

You could always boil them up and use the stock and meat (after removing bones)

to mix with their food - or are you trying to introduce them to raw food?

Not really trying to introduce them to raw food just thought it would be better for them as it would help to clean their teeth and easier than cooking then stripping the meat of

Neither Fern or Sky will eat wings unless they are cut up, but they love chicken necks - ask if your butcher has those to try. :thumbsup:

I'm just double checking that you know they should always be frozen for at least 24 hours before thawing out and feeding, as you say you got them yesterday and tried to feed at tea time yesterday. Just being cautious, they may have been frozen when you bought them, I don't know. :unsure:

I always take them out of the freezer and cover them with boiling water to thaw them.

Annie loves wings but I always cut the sections up for her and give her the 3rd joint the wing tip whole. Alfie occasionally has a wing tip but he's not overly impressed with raw meat, he's very picky with food and doesn't eat much at all, but Annie is just a greedy guts.

I bought some chicken wings for Willow and Archie for the first time this week.

Willow set straight to work on hers and chewed away. Archie licked his for quite abit, then watched to see what Willow was doing and figured it out. They get one now mid afternoon on the days they don't have a big meaty bone on the go.

I'd love to get "leftovers" or whatever you call them from the local butcher, but don't know how to approach them about it. What do you ask for? Are most butchers happy to give leftover meat for dogs?

Have you tried taking little bits of meat off the bone and feeding that to the reluctant dogs? It might give them a taste for it and eventually they might try it whole.

many butchers are glad of you taking what they classas waste meat as they have to pay to have it disposed of by set companies with licences, we have 2 here we use and are always grateful to give me meat and bones for the dogs. last night my dads dogs had 2 full sides of sirloin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i did enjoy my egg and chips ( not!!!!!!) sometime we do give them a few quid just as a thank you and try to but our family meat from them as a goodwill gesture. :thumbsup:

Best thing to do is just ask a few in your area? :thumbsup:

I had the same problem with Rafferty, he just looked at them & wagged his tail. I think he was waiting for it to move :lol: Someone on K9 (sorry, can't remember who) suggested playing tuggy with it or dangling it in front of him to entice him to eat it. I did, although I hope none of the neighbours saw me :b & it worked, he will now eat them without all the playacting, thank goodness.

Just checking here but I'm a bit confused, if I buy them from Tescos from the chiller cabinet do I have to freeze them & then defrost them or can I give one to the dogs when I get home with them, cos they know I've got them, & then freeze the rest. This is what I've been doing without any problems but is this right. If not I'll have to sneak them into the freezer via the back door so the dogs don't sniff them out (w00t)

I give my two girls chicken wings (frozen then thawed out ) Gracie loves them and would eat loads in one go given the chance :b Evie will eat them some days and other days will turn her nose up at them :unsure:

Zeb would eat chicken wings every day if he could, but he has them once or twice a week. I cant get him to eat raw. I tryed to get him to eat offel the other week he started then refused every meal he had. But chick wings thats a different story.

I find that dogs are often reluctant at first when introduced to something totally different. Playing with the neck or wing until he jumps up and grabs it helps, or on ocassions I zapped the wing in microwave for few seconds, just to worm it up little bit. I would single out the dogs that were not interested and give them one wing or neck somewhere where they can contamplait what to do with it in peace. They will eat it sooner or later. I have not met a dog who did not come to love raw meat.

Will be brave and approach the local butchers soon. :b Sirloin steak eh? I swear all our dogs eat better than us most times!

I believe freezing them kills off anything danerous in the meat..... though I have feed the odd bit of raw bone and meat with no ill effects. Check out the thread on raw feeding in FAQ for more info.

NO, it definitely does not kill salmonela, it will temporalily stop multiplying some nasties, but once they are already there it will not help to make the food safe.

Freezing supposes to kill neosporum.

Taz loves chicken wings, but gobbles them down so fast he doesn't chew them properly. A couple of times he's coughed/sicked up little bits of bone after eating one (sorry :x ), so I got scared and haven't given him any more.

Does anyone else's dog do this, and have they ever suffered any ill effects?

Hold the neck or wing so he cannot swallow it. Get him to bite on it. Some people get a hammer and bash the necks flat. The necks do not have any sharp splintering bones so it should not be problem. :luck:

Fred doesn't like his cold from the fridge so I make sure I take them out the fridge to get to room temperature first. He'll eat them with encouragement, but they're not his favourite food. Stan just wolfs his down, he's a greedy so and so!

I give Moss wings two or three times a week for her breakfast. She eats them slowly and they do help a lot to keep her teeth clean.

Like some others, I was lead to believe that the freezing process only applied to beef. There was some discussion about it yonks ago on K9.

Tanya. I'll be glad to eat some of your doggies left overs just to help you out of course. Sirloin steaks (w00t) . Yes please.

I phoned a friend last night who feeds all her dogs raw meat. She said it was beef that needed to be frozen first. She told me to bash them with a hammer first to break up the bones .

Tegan and Owen have now tried the wings Tegan will chew it up but spit it out if you then break itinto smaller pieces she will eat them. Owen tentayily ate half of one last night but I had to hold it and let him nibble bits of.

Seraphina you have never met William. Yesterday I put him in his crate with a wing I went to check on him later the wing was under his bed and he was curled up in the corner fast asleep I make a big fuss over giving the others theirs but he just goes and takes himself of to bed. He doesn't eat bones raw or roast we have even given bits of steak and he won't touch it. We've left things were he can get at it so he thinks he's stealing it but he still leaves it. Last night I bashed a wing and cut it into tiny pieces and mixed it with his tea and he did eat it as it was mixed in with some cooked meat tried the same thing again this morning and he's sorted through it and left the chicken bits :- "
