What can I use to clean wounds on my little whippets legs? She has managed to get some scrapes (nothing too major but definitely cleaned properly) so I can make sure they don't go infected?

TCP? So there is no harm if she licks it. Sudocrem is good for healing too but I would suggest putting that on right before a walk so she is less inclined to lick it off.

found this on the net from a vet * Savlon, Bepanthen and Sudocrem all contain cetrimide. Its an antiseptic used widely in topical creams. Toxic to fibroblasts it may inhibit progression through proliferative phase of healing.*

Good old-fashioned salt water! Dissolve a teaspoon of table salt in a cup of boiled water. Allow to cool.

I use Hibiscrub.

I've used diluted Hibiscrub on horses (I mean they roll on manure, you need heavy duty often!) but think it can be too harsh for scrapes and knocks on dogs. Dogs skin is thinner than equines too. Remember it kills everything, friendly bacteria and all. It would be my second or third resort for dogs.

I should have said I do dilute it a lot - just a dash in a jug of water - but I will have a rethink based on what you've said. Mostly I use it if he's got a minor cut on a pad or foot which is difficult to keep clean.

As for feet (spaniels again!) try an Epsom salt bath...dissolve as recommended and hold paw in margarine tub of the liquid for 5 mins...if you can- you and the kitchen floor will be swimming in by then.

Mind you as my horse vet from the university teaching hospital said recently 'if Hibiscrub is that bad we should all be dead!' (he was yellow up to the elbows at the time)

You can use saline solution: 2 tablespoons of salt in a pint of warm water, or you can use SudoCrem.

We once had a vet who was not keen on using creams on wounds. His reason was that general dirt would be attracted and stick to a cream, on a wound what you were trying to keep clean.

Yes they use this on horses and is highly recommended for most creatures including my georgeous chicken !

I was meaning that after you wipe it with saline solution then you can apply the cream...

I use Leucillin antiseptic spray. It doesn’t sting and is safe on sensitive areas.
