Hello All

Just wanted to know if anyone has any experience of their whippets eating conkers?

We have a massive conker tree overhanging our garden (which thank goodness is getting chopped down in a few weeks time - it's a nightmare for mess. leaves/conkers/shells/sticky buds!) and whilst there are obviously no fresh conkers at this time of year, there are still some old black/rotten conkers lying about in some parts of the garden. Anyway, this morning I fed Lily and she didn't eat all her food like normal but left some. When I went out to poo pick in the garden she had done a couple of proper cowpat poos so had had an upset tummy and I could see some half chewed up rotten conkers on the lawn. I'm guessing that she has eaten some and that what has upset her (Although she eats all sorts of leaves and stuff in the garden, sometimes before I see her do it). I called the vet for some advice and the nurse said that conkers can be mildly toxic and to keep an eye on her, make sure she drinks but to starve her for 24 hours to clear her system out and if she gets poorly or is still runny when she eats again to go in. She is fine in herself, is still tearing about like a looney and chewing everything in sight!!

Has anyone else had a similar situation? Does that sound like good advice? I feel rotten starving her but will for her own good if it sorts her out.

Thanks! xx

Horse Chestnut is about the only tree that we don't have in our garden but the advice regarding starving for 24 hours is good and then perhaps a couple of bland meals - white fish or chicken. I have heard that conkers are toxic to dogs (other symptoms are muscle spasms and vomiting). Hope he feels better soon.

Thankyou. I've seen that info online about the spasms and vomiting. None of either so far. I suspect it's the rottenness of them that's as bad as anything. They were all black and smelly - why the hell would you want to eat that!!! She seems fine still so will starve her and keep a really close eye on her. xx

Heres a handy list of poisonous plants to dogs...

Horse chestnuts are mentioned.....if eaten in quanitity
Thanks Janis. I don't think she has eaten more than a couple at most, but she is still small. I'm hoping it's just given her a tummy ache and the runs and she will feel much better tommorow. I've done a big sweep up of all the ones I can see and fenced off the bit directly under the tree where there are hundreds of the bloody things so I can be pretty sure she won't get anymore.

Well I just got back from the vets and they are keeping Lily in over night on a drip as a precaution!

I rang them back again after reading up online. She had been a bit more lethargic this afternoon with really stinky wind and she's not drunk any water todat. When I called back the receptionist I spoke to was lovely and said I should bring her in at 5:45 but then a couple of minutes after hanging up, she called again to say that she had spoken to the vet and he said best to bring her straight in! He told me that conkers are toxic, although not as toxic as the leaves and flowers and that as she had not drunk, it was best to give her the drip and monitor her overnight as, like babies, puppies can go downhill quite quickly. I'm trying not to worry. She's only been here 4 weeks but the house seems awfully empty without her. :(

Got to ring first thing tommorow to see how she is. x

Well at least your vets are on the ball and they will probably put her on a drip to give her fluids. Try not to worry, she's in the best place and at least you won't have a sleepless night watching her for other symptoms. I hope she's back with you very soon, even when you have more that one whippy, if one is missing the house is very quiet without him/her.

Hope Lily is ok, shes probably in the best place, especially if shes not drinking

good luck, and hope shes back home soon... :luck: :luck:

Thanks everyone. I'm sure she will be fine. She didn't seem 'ill' apart from the pooing and smell and the fact she was a little bit sleep. She was still trying to chew me and wagged her tail at the vet and licked him! I'm trying not to worry and instead have cleaned the kitchen! Looking foward to an update in the morning... will let you know how she is. xx

Aww try not too worry she is in the best place the little tinker will soon be home causing havoc lol x

Well, I just got Lily home! She was so pleased to see me, was lovely! She's now tearing about the garden as though nothing happened. They said she has been fine, was on the drip all night. She did a normal poo. They have given me some really bland food for her for 3 days to be on the safe side.

PHEW PHEW PHEW PHEW!!!!!

Such good news... these whippies love scaring us to death......

That's great news. Well done you and your quick thinking vets. I shall keep remembering that it's times like these that we realise how precious our whippies are. I will especially bear this in mind as I have just been told that Milo and Gracie are, at this very moment, charging around the garden with a toilet roll each and apparently it looks like it's been snowing. Darling whippies, where would we be without them!

Thanks everyone!! So glad to have her back. I'm watching her now, she's just discovered she can stand on the window sill and look out the front room window - nosey girl!!
