Devon went to see a specialist yesterday at the Davies Vet Specialists in Hitchin, he had a thorough examination, xrays and an MRI scan. The vet was lovely with Devon and explained things really well to us. She said that apart from this disc problem, Devon's general health is excellent - good teeth, eyes bit cloudy but not bad and heart sounded great - phew! :sweating:

However, the tests have shown that he has multiple intervertebral disc protrusions / extrusions in his neck / cervical spine :(

The vet doesn't feel that surgery is the best option for him and has recommended 4 weeks total cage rest -_- followed by 4 to 8 weeks of very short walks and cage rest, gradually increasing the length of his walks. He isn't allowed to mix with the other dogs for ages and he isn't allowed to jump on the sofa, and will probably never be allowed to walk up and down stairs ever again :( so it looks like we'll be getting a stair gate up after all these years ;)

It does seem quite harsh but we wouldn't want to put him through surgery, and it is winter so he'll probably would have spent most that time sleeping somewhere cosy anyway. :huggles:

Me and Wayne had a real heart-to-heart after Devon's consultation and had almost agreed to take him home, give him a last few pampered days then have him put to sleep - then we decided that we were there now, we might as well have the scan done, just to be sure. I can't tell you how much I cried when we were taking him home!!!! It was slightly more than I cried the rest of the time we were there :- " :b

The vet said that he can't be walked on a collar when he is allowed back out, we need to get a harness - any recommendations?

I can't begin to tell you how pleased I was when I heard that things weren't as bad as you were thinking and that with lots of rest and no more gallavanting with the others he will hopefully improve.

I know that you are doing the best thing for him as I know just how precious he is to you.

I think he deserves an extra cosy new bed for Christmas now he isn't going to be allowed upstairs to get in yours :huggles:

I'm so glad you have a positive outcome... all the best for dear Devon

It's only 4 days til his 12th birthday :sweating: but I did treat him to a very expensive heat-reflecting quilt as an early present :huggles:

I think Santa might manage to find him a nice treat - but knowing Devon, all he wants is a fried egg sarnie followed by a long kip under a warm blanket :huggles: -_-

Great News Ali, lots of warm snoozes for Devon Zzzzzzz

No more tears Alison just give Devon all the TLC he needs which we know you will.

Good news that it is not as bad as you expected so now all of you enjoy Christmas.

Glad to hear you have a treatment plan and a diagnosis. Here's hoping your Devon is feeling much better very soon! :flowers:

What a roller coaster journey this has been for you all and thankfully a wonderful outcome - Im sure he will cope with being pampered, cozy and warm for a few weeks :huggles:

Way to go sweet boy Devon :huggles:

Well as this post made my hubby cry may I suggest hydrotherapy - I was cynic to begin with however having been on the training, and got our own pool I now see all the benefits and would recommend to anyone to give their dog a new lease of life.

may I suggest a very very very very very good hydro centre at http://www.greyfriarsrehab.co.uk/ I know its a long way but maybe there is a centre local to you.

:luck:

THAT'S GOOD NEWS ALISON GIVE DEVON A BIG HUG FROM ME

Have you thought about acupuncture... my border collie Grace did her back in almost

five years ago now and the vets said the only hope for her was surgery as she was paralyzed from the shoulders back.... I phoned Millie in tears and she told me of a

homeopathic vet that has great success in getting dogs walking again with acupuncture

so off we went after her first session she gained function to her bladder and bowels, after the 2nd she gained feeling back in her hind legs and her 3rd and last treatment she started to walk with a little help all of this in the space of Two weeks

we were amazed she now runs around with the whippets at the age of 10yrs.

It's something to think about

Sarah
