Don't think I want to know how they
Ive only seen this done the once but there were 10 pups...and I can honestly say hand on heart...there is hardly any pain...in fact the puppies only made a little squeak and then were put back in with mam. No blood...a tiny little speck which healed almost straight away....it seemed pretty painless to me. At 2-3 days old there is very little there in the way of a nailbed/nail, so hence the best time to do it.

In all honesty I would rather my dogs didnt have them....but it was too late to remove Archies so he still has his...so guess Ill have to take a chance this time.

janis no offence but i can understand why they wernt bothered by it, as star still has both of hers, and ruby only 1, but the other looks as though its thinking about growing back. im pretty sure rosie said the skye still had hers too, so the person who did them didnt do it right :- "

:huggles:

No of course no offence Katie.....

I felt aweful because I asked this person to do it for them (Sonya and Trevor)

and some of the dew claws came back, which can happen if they are not taken off close enough... :( I think Flint or little Ellie has one of theirs too...

I really wanted Archies doing, but couldnt get anyone at the time then, wished Id done them myself now...after watching how it was done with the Gems it seemed quite easy...I just think he didnt get close enough.

Honestly Katie, even if its done right...it dosnt hurt them.

My mums dog, Patches, who is a whippet cross has hers. She is 10 this year and has had no problems. She runs around like crazy through all sorts of terrain. Always has, she is a little mad sometimes.

I would not really want to put Poppy under anaesthetic for no reason at this stage. Although I guess if she ever had any problems it may be an option then.

that sounds about right as rubys one that doesnt have one still has a lump and a very very very small point which looks like a nail trying to grow through, so i figured who ever did it just didnt cut enough off.

they dont bother me to much, just a little worry about if they do catch them in the future. its not really worth the risk of getting them removed now, unless they did do some damage, so we will just be taping them up when need be

Sonya and Trevor noticed some of them coming back through Katie and rang me...so we tried a couple of vets and they wouldnt touch them... :( so they had to be left the way they were.

Im sure Blue (Zulu) has none....or Harry....

its one of those things I suppose....but I recomended this person, hes a greyhound man too... :- "

You live and learn... but I do think some vets will eventually stop doing dew claws all together like docking...Im sure this will happen in the future, in my opinion.

Katie ....use vet wrap its brilliant for wrapping the dew claws if you are going to try racing...

I tend to think its the same with most things these days regarding vets - an old school experienced runnings dog vet wouldn't bat an eye lid, some of the younger ones as someone has said have to refer to books etc - which would obviously put you off in the first instance.

We have a little bitch with half of one growing back and apart from clipping it as short as possible we have to bandage her when she races, this was done by someone who's been doing dew claws 30+ years, it's not impossible for them to grow back even by an experienced person but it's few and far between. I've done a few litters now with no further problems but i dare say at some point i'll have one that grows back.

I would always advise dew claws to be removed on any breed, they're just a pain in the a**e, and if all it takes is a little snip at a few days hold then i see no reason not to do it.
