I'm thinking of switching the dog's insurance to Direct Line ... anyone got any horror stories re. claims with them, or are their K9 customers happy people?

Cheers, Annie

i am with direct line......i havent had to claim for anything so not sure what they are like

i have had gypsy for 2 years and when i first took out the insurance it was £12.09...and two years later it is £16.09......................i know she is getting older but im not sure it should go up that much.....i am starting to look around for something else

When I had Border terriers, I insured with direct line, then over the years I added 3 g/hounds. Never claimed, but the premiums jumped so much year after year that in the end I cancelled with them. Been with Argos (platinum policy) since I got whippies, and considering the problems Ive had with both of my dogs :- they have been very good. Ozzy cost them well over £4,000 in all (so far) and Vinnie £1,500 when he ate his stick :b

my girls are with direct line but i havent ever had to claim thankfully

Had my 6 insured with them and had 3 claims within 2 months for 3 of the dogs, paid out straight away without any problems .

i havent got them insured now and we have 7 cause its cheaper for us to put the money into an account for them

I've claimed a couple of times, and they have always paid promptly. Fred's insurance is very high now though, being an oldie, and having claimed a few times. I did switch one year, and Direct Line persuaded to me to go back to them with a slightly cheaper quote, although I had to deduct holiday cover etc to achieve this lower price.

I'm afraid I've not heard anything good about Direct Line for pet insurance, I've heard of several instances of people really struggling to get payouts from them and they have quibbled about every detail of the cost.

Their basic policy also only covers each condition for 12 months not for life, so if you end up with a dog needing permanent medication you are stuffed after the first year. Their 'better' policy giving lifetime cover seems very expensive at least for an older animal - I got an online quote for Taz (10 year old lurcher with absolutely no health problems) and it was £45 a month

I'm looking at AXA pet insurance at the moment, they seem to have an excellent reputation and their quote was less than half the price of Direct Line for a much better level of cover and including all the extras :))

i have been with direct line for 10 years, when i took the policy out on dana it was about £6 now i pay almost £30 a month. she is now on heart tablets and will be covered untill may next year. at the time i took out the policy there were only 12 month ones available. it will be interesting to see how much the cover charge jumps in november when i need to renew it, i may very well cancel it as i know i can get her meds online for half the vet charge.

before the stroke i had only had made 1 claim b4, but for both claims they have paid out promptly and with no problems but they r quite dear and bump up the covercharge by about £5 per year even if u havent made a claim.

I use Argos platinum cover for mine ........ no probs paying out (and I claimed twice within 3 months for one of mine, different injuries)

It's life cover for any disease/injury as well

They seem very reasonable at the moment (around £11 per month each) - but mine are all young, and the premiums haven't increased yet

i dont know much about direct line for pet insurance even though we re with them for our cars

im with halifax for the dogs..and ive certainly had my money s worth out of them....peggy had a spinal injury two years ago and although i only had upto £1000 vet fee at that time , theyve paid up

ive increased peggy upto £6000 vet fees...was £50 now£60 excess per condition per year and im still claiming for peggys injury(tablets every 2-3mths plus check ups), aslo ive claim several times for her past and present injuries(just recently had her toe removed and they paid up no problem)usually gota wait for my vet to fill in form..which can take ages!!

i pay £18 for peggy age 8 and £11 for Bow age4

Ours are all with More Than, Annie. Never had a problem when making claims. Not the cheapest but competitive.

I have been with Direct Line for years and have found that, although you have to wait 2-3 weeks for the payout, they have always paid up- I have had some pretty big claims too- including one for £4000!!

I am considering cancelling the insurance though- for my 5 dogs and 1 cat it is now £95 a month!! :( I have a credit card which I don't use, with £8000 available on it- if I paid the £95 per month onto the card, I could also use it for 'routine' stuff, which isn't covered by the insurance, and I don't think it would work out any more expensive.

The main thing which is making me consider cancelling the insurance though, is what happened when I claimed for my old boy Alfie recently. He had 2 lumps and a small piece of epulis (gum overgrowth) removed, and because the lumps were unrelated to each other, I had to pay THREE lots of £80 excess!!

have a look at www.pdsa.org.uk insurance, i got a quote for my 8mth lurcher and its cheaper than the others by about 30-60 a year with lifetime cover of 7000, if you put lurcher tho instead of crossbreed it will increase the premium by £20, it helps if your vet has your dog down as a crossbreed, whipx, greyx or mongrel and not as a lurcher too
