For weeks and weeks now there has been a pack of dogs roaming around freely on my road and surrounding area, started off with 2 and now there's 4 they are out at all times of day and at least once a day fell it a good idea to s**t in front my garden, anyway Last week I decided i'd had enough so on the first I sent them this message(couldn't find a phone number anywhere on the council site  )

Sent 1st Feb

There are 3 dogs wandering on my road everyday and surrounding area, I

believe them to belong to someone on my road although I do not know who, they

are fouling in my front garden everyday and wandering the streets, I do not know

if they bite or not but there are a lot of children in the area so dangerous if

so, they are: one brown and white stocky build short haired, one black and tan

longhaired and one red/brown long haired both med build, I am getting very

annoyed by this as I believe it is cruel to the dogs annoying to the residents

and as they are wandering freely in a pack and could be a potential danger to

children

I got an automated reply telling me I would recieve a reply with in 2 days

So after 7 days and no reply I sent this

I received an automated reply from you following a report from myself

of stray dogs on the 1st feb informining me I would receive a reply within 2

days, well today is the 7th and as of yet i have not received one, I informed

you of three stray dogs wandering freely in my area and it was unknown as to

whether these dogs were dangerous or not therefor if anything happens now I

believe it is your responsiblity, what is the point of having this service if

you aren't going to do anything when you get a report

Today the manager rings (about 11am) asking me why I felt the need to complain and who said I'd get a reply within two days I said the email reply did, he says the warden has been to your garden 4 times this week and posted a card(they haven't) I told him that the dogs do not sit in my garden all day the roam the streets, he also said that without a description it would be a bit hard to know what these dogs looked like, and what time they come  I gave a description in my first email and told him this and apart from anything else 3 loose dogs (now 4)were quite easy to see

After he went on to tell me that they were very busy and couldn't respond to everything because they had to deal with real dangerous strays (in a very patronising way  ) I said I appreciate that but these dogs could be dangerous and in a pack more so, would you have preferred me to leave them until they bite someone? then I know for definate they are dangerous?and if there is somewhere else I can ring give me the number and I will ring them, he says we need you to ring us when they are in the area so we can send some one out, we can't just keep coming on the off chance(still patronising),( I'm getting really mad by this point)I said well they are accross the road now sh*****g in my neighbours garden so is that good enough, he says the dog warden will come and take a look  Goodbye

Anyway on my way home from the school run, low and behold there they still are

Nearly forgot here's a couple of nice snaps because I'm sure he doesn't believe me, why do people get dogs if they can't be bothered to look after them

Annoy them to death by ringing everytime you see them. However, i understand that this will be inconvenient for you and quite frankly, why should you have to?! Luckily the dog warden in the area i work is brilliant and comes out as soon as you ask. It's quite unusual these days to get packs roaming around. :luck: with getting problem sorted.

Ring them back and tell them that they ran at you growling and snapping and that you have pix of them and if they don't do something within 48 hours you will get the local press and TV news down there. . That should make em think, esp the photos. (w00t)

I feel like a right busy body, I hate complaining and I'm in no way tarring all dog wardens the same but if these dogs bit a child or caused a road accident I couldn't rest if I hadn't reported it, I know it's not the dogs fault but it's not the owners who are going to be knocked down or PTS for biting somebody.

It's terrible these dogs are out all day everyday and no-one touches them and then people steal someones whippet by breaking into kennels and gardens, whose owners wouldn't dream of letting them roam and care so much for them :(

I got a card today(first time) to ring but the warden isn't there so she is going to ring me back(apparently) but I'm going to ring again before they shut

Good for you Lesley! The dogs look happy enough but if they increase in pack size and confidence they could become a real problem! :(

The dog warden never came back to the office but the receptionist told me they have had another complaint about them today.

I'm not sure they were being friendly Hilary with the racket they were making I wouldn't have got between them anyway (w00t)

The trouble with that is the dogs might then be pts as dangerous dogs!!

do the dogs have tags?...how about getting the details and giving them to the dog warden?(if the dogs will let you of course!)

:ermm:

How annoying, frustrating and inconvienient for you Lesley, but keep on in there,

keep ringing and do tell them you have photos and if nothing is done you will

contact the press. I can see one of the dogs has a collar is there a tag on it ? or collars on the others ?

Like you say it's not fair on the dogs to be let out to roam all day and nothing done about it.

Could you also get a few neighbour to ring and complain too, if there are a few people complaining something might get done and not ignored.

Good luck and keep us updated :luck:

Why not ring as `someone else ` :- " .

It would be sad if these poor , unloved dogs were taken in and PTS , but would you like dog c** p all over your garden  , what about children playing , cos I bet theyve never been wormed in their life  (w00t)

Lesley get naibours to ring and complain about them as well, tell them they are barking allday/night and keep waking your baby (cane lol)

they've got to act.

Poor Lesley, this is an awful thing to have to put up with, but looking at it from the legal point of view. A dog must wear a collar and tag and be kept on a lead at all times on the public roads, I hardly these dogs fit the criteria.

In my area they are having a real purge on dog fouling (Well they are making lots of noise, but not actually doing anything!!) Point being - who is cleaning up after these dogs?? I would certainly contact the local papers if nothing is done about them in a few days. I don't know if anyone remembers the case in Burnley a couple of years ago, a little boy was attacked by a small pack of dogs and was very lucky that a man was passing at the time and beat the dogs off. They started out as 3 dogs let out to play every day by their owner (they were all from one house,) other dogs joined in and the little boy could have been far more badly injured than he was - he needed plastic surgery as it was. Your dog warden should be quick to prevent it getting to this stage by acting now, not after it is too late and a child is badly injured and the dogs end up being PTS.

Keep us informed Lesley, fingers crossed that the dog warden will actually do their job tomorrow.

Thats what I worry about young kids I'd hate for the dogs to be PTS but I work at the local upper school which is down the road from me and at home time a lot of them walk past my house on their way home and as some of them are only 11 are quite small and I'd hate for one of them to get bitten, a couple of them I would like to bite them myself   but thats another story

And not just that if one of mine were to accidently get out (slip through the gate ect) I am very careful not to let that happen but you never know what chance would they have against a pack of 4, the brown and white one has a collar and is quite new to the pack but I think it's a staff x by it's face and I don't know if it bites (w00t)

I'm going to get my mum in law to complain tmrw she lives 3 doors down

-_- Sometimes it is very useful to know what, exactly, the remit of the dog warden is regarding packs of dogs/and or roaming. So phone the police and ask them how you go about getting the necessary department to do what they are paid to do, and before someone get injured! If it's not them, they will be only too happy to tell you exactly what you should/can/may do to get action. Also, PUT THE COMPLAINT IN WRITING, even if it's only an email, and copy the email to the boss of the person to whom you are writing; and don't forget your local councillor, county councillor, MP and the local paper. State in the email that you intend to keep copies just in case some person should like to bring a case against the council for failing to control wandering dogs! In which case, you can provide them with the written evidence that you tried, and failed, to get something done etc. Phones are fine, but the conversations are not recorded, so it is always a good idea to follow up a complaint with a letter outlining the concerns. It's wrong that we should have to fight to get councils to do what they ought to be doing anyway, and when you don't want them they are all over you like a rash as anyone who has put in a planning application is only too aware! :luck:

Just seen this Lesley, I hope the dogs get sorted soon. As Oliverpliers says, the pack behaviour will get stronger the longer they are on the loose together.

There is a stray 'lurcher' can I add in my village too - been living rough for over 3 months now - no one can even get anywhere near it. Its been reported - but nothing has happened so far. I believe the RSPCA have been out once so someone told me. How on earth it has survived in this cold weather I'll never know - but people have been leaving scraps out fot it and it has been rading dustbins also.

Must admit its not aggressive, but scarpers as soon as it sees you approaching even with dogs too. But with lambing time approaching - dosnt bear thinking about. :(

I have heard that if the Dog Wardens take them, they are put to sleep after 7 days if no-one claims them, does anyone know if this is correct please??

Any more new on the dogs Lesley

well the dog warden rang me this morning and I have to admit she was a lot nice than the man I spoke to yesterday, firstly she told me she had been to 52 a lot because the owner of the house had complained that one of them had been sleeping under the bushes, the bloke yesterday swore me down that it was my house she'd been to  she said she hasn't been to my house yet

Anyway I gave her discriptions and she is going to keep looking and asked me if I see my postman he might know where they live, because if she can find out where they live she can give them a stern warning then if they do it again the dogs will be taken and it will cost them to get them out.

She also said can't you lure them into your side garden then I'll come get them (w00t) (w00t) I said I'm not having them in my bloody garden I don't know if they've been innoculated and I have a baby(Kane) and besides I don't want to be that responsible for them because if the owners find out they might try to do something to my dogs

So it's just a matter of waiting although I gave her the address of one of them a mate of mine at work knows the owner and she said they just let the dog out and they are at home all day drinking and smoking wacky baccy (w00t)

Well an update, I haven't heard from the dog warden BUT I haven't seen the dogs for about 3 days now so either I just haven't noticed them or somethings been done so far so good

The law is - kennels which hold a licence to take in stray dogs must keep the dogs for 7 CLEAR days, the dogs can then be re-homed, sent to rescue or PTS. Any other person taking in a stray must keep the dog for 28 days before being able to claim it. It is exactly the same as for any other found property!

Sadly many of these dogs are PTS. A lot of people blame the kennels, I blame the irresponsible owners who allow their dogs to roam. This does show the importance of identifying your dog in some permanect way, whether it be microchipping or tattooing. Plus the law requires a collar and tag. After 7 days, you have lost your dog one way or the other!

I know of several cases where people have found a dog and taken it to their local police station, not the one that was local to where the dog was found. The poor dogs end up miles away from home and it can be a nightmare tracing them through the system.
