So sorry to hear about Diesel. Hope he makes a good recovery. We had a dog with the same problem and have heard of many more. Nearly all of them have recovered enough to lead a decent life. Ours did have to have surgery though. That was when he was 8 years old but he went on to to live to be nearly 14 years old.
Fingers crossed for Diesel and Holly.

Apologies for hijacking this thread from Diesel (great about his recovery).

Two weeks ago our 4 year old whippet, Rocket (Parkstone Blade Runner), over-ran a football at high speed and did a twisting somersault. He was paralysed from the waist down and within 36 hours was operated on to clear up a confirmed ruptured disc. It's now 2 weeks on and he still cannot stand without assistance. the vet maintains that he has made some slight advances but he is compensating for the lack of back legs by cantilevering forward on his fronts. The vet nurses are giving him phisio 4 times a day and we went to see him tonight as we do every night, and he appeared to manage a slight wag of his tail! I've joined this forum because I'm desperate to find out whether our much loved Rocket will recover, Judy mentioned that her dog had to have surgery - how long was it before he(she) was able to walk even a few steps?

Only when something happens like this do you realise how much whippets mean to you.

Hi Wolfy,

fingers crossed for you and your whip!

You've got to keep faith and be positive!

Is he Diesel's (Parkstone Cool as Ice) litter brother or half brother?

Scott.

if my memory serves me right  He's from Rowangarth Dawn Wind x Molly

asked OH she says same as me, "UNLESS OF COURSE DIGBY KNOW DIFFERANT" lol

He's also got Lucys Brother. (WCRCh Chase The Pied Piper x Parkstone Taboo)

If he's 4 is he not out of Rose or Candy ?
Scott, He's from Saxon Blade x Parkstone Sweet Harmony (Rose). Last night his tail DEFINATELY wagged but all his muscles in his lower back have shrunk alarmingly but I think he is getting some sensation back into his rear legs at last!

Hope Diesel is continuing on his deserved road to recovery.

Best wishes

My old girl had really nasty fall which took weeks and weeks of helping her walk (as a matter of fact we held her up with a substantial harness), but after a few months or so and alot of nursing Joanna was and still is about 90% sound  ......It was well worth all of that hard work and i'd do it again if the need arose ....... :luck: :luck: with your boy and email me if you have any more questions :luck: :)

Digby glad to hear that Rocket is wagging his tail. I've never had this happen to one of mine (touching wood madly as I write this) but of the ones that I do know of they seem to make slow but sure progress.

Give Rocket a hug from me.

At times like this you tend to forget other members of the family. 6 month old Bandit is another SUPERB dog from Parkstone, a fastidious animal however he has disgraced himself this afternoon by rolling in some fox sh?t! He really misses Rocket and sniffs at his empty crate every night as does our big Norwegian Forest Cat (yes - I know what you think of cats) who was first on the scene when Rocket got injured. It never cease to amaze me the relationships between our close knit family of humans and animals.

>Norwegian Forest Cat

That is one big cat. Once my two cats are no more I've stated no more cats. But I have to say that I do have a hankering for a NFC or a Maine Coon. Something big that takes no messing around with. On the other hand I do get fed up with mouse heads left in the utility room though the whippets find them a tasty little snack. :b

Hi Digby, i'm sure everything will work out ok, give me a shout if you need anything.

My friend has just got a Maine Coon. I will pop along the road to see him today. They are just fabulous, more like a dog than a cat.

Hope little Rocket makes a full recovery

Hi Wolfy and welcome to K9

Our old dog Duster was wobbly on his legs for quite a while before we eventually managed to get him properly diagnosed when we were referred to the Animal Health Trust at Newmarket. We were originally sent there for an MRI scan. The AHT had the only MRI scanner for animals in the country at that time. He never had the scan though as a neurological specialist vet diagnosed him right down to which verterbra the ruptured disc was between with only the aid of a rubber hammer!! Its amazing how much better a specialist is. He was x-rayed to confirm it and then operated on to remove the disc which had broken up. He could just about stand and walk a bit, with us holding him in a harness, when we brought him home a week later but carried on improving for about 6 months. I think it was only a couple of weeks before he could wobble round the garden unaided but he never bothered cocking his leg again :b Although he was never completely steady on his legs again, he did manage to get around well enough for the next 6 years untill he died at 14.

Good luck with Rocket. Hope he makes a steady recovery.

Just been to see Rocket and he is now able to stand on all fours for a minute or so , the orthopaedic surgeon is now more optimistic about his slow progress but he won’t be home until he can walk however slightly and that not be for a week or so yet (provided he continues with his present rate of recovery).

Thanks for all the positive support and advice that everyone has given for Rocket, it has REALLY helped us to come to terms with seeing him immobile during his convalescence. We don’t race our dogs but reading through this forum has confirmed that all you whippet racing people are a very caring bunch and clearly love your dogs!

Thanks, Scott, for putting up with my stealing your thread, hope Diesel is still getting better.

No problem Digby, hope Rocket progresses well!

Took Diesel to the field today and although I'm not prepared to let him off the lead he had a couple of very gentle jogs! :D

He's now up and down the stairs at will and leaping on to the bed, chairs or sofa! You can still tell he's not 100% but improves daily. hope the other dogs have similar sucess! :huggles:

Hi Scott

Last Sunday saw a great improvement, he can now walk on 3 1/2 legs (I say a 'half' because that leg is not very co-ordinated), The vet's so pleased with this improvement that he wants us to take him home this Friday so that he will benefit with being in his own surroundings. Luckily there is going to be one of the family at home to continue with his phisiotherapy.

I just can't believe it, just a few days ago I was not hopeful but the vet says that he has been one of the most determined dogs with a spinal injury that he has come across. As posted by others earlier, this is the character of the whippet. Have to make sure that the young pup doesn't bother him but I know that our big cat has had "words" with the pup before when he used to bother Rocket when he was asleep!

Do you think that Diesel will race again?

Digby

Glad to hear he's improving!

Honest answer about Diesel is, I don't know!

Not sure if I want to put me, Joey, and Deez through this again!

We'll see, not making any decisions. Not yet anyway!

Brilliant news about Rocket :D .......See I told you that you can never underestimate a Whippet, they are proud and determined little buggers :) .......
