I THINK THAT FIREWORKS SHOULD BE BANNED FROM BUYING IN SHOPS TO THE PUBLIC.THEY SHOULD BE SOLD ONLY TO PUBLIC EVENTS WITH A LICENSE.DO YOU AGREE?IT WOULD BE FAR MORE SAFER AND NO HOLIGANS WOULD BE ABLE TO GET HOLD OF THEM AND DO STUPID AND CRUEL THINGS TO PEOPLE AND ANIMALS.

I couldn't agree more.

It's just not necessary for people to have them outside publice displays. It only causes nuiscance, damage and injury because most people are too stupid to handle them properly or consider the effect on those around them.

Two of my dogs are petrified due to the selfishness of neighbours and for what? A couple of bangs and a few sparks  ???

Organised public displays are usually quite spectacular so save your cash and go and show your kids some responsible, truly impressive displays.

..and another thing... sparklers are PATHETIC! How many toddlers get burned with them too

I'd like to see a total ban except for organised events and also kept to the one day.

I normally use Valerian Compound with Beau and have had good results but decided to try the Skullcap and Valerian tablets as well. They have worked brilliantly and he has had a calmer few days. I think it would have been better for him if I had got the tablets earlier so he could have started them a week before as recommended. At least I will have my supply ready for New Year.

They are not worth the damage and upset they cause to people and animals  :(

Agree toally Julie,

My kids have always enjoyed the organised displays, - at least you know when they are going to be held, and you can prepare your animals.

I dont agree with them being on sale for the general joe bloggs in the street

regulate better yes ban WHY?.
How can you regulate for rank stupidity of grown adults? The people who use them irresponsibly hereabouts are ADULTs, not kids. I've witnessed my nextdoor neighbours setting them off while completely drunk, with rockets going off at extremely low angles.

Although there are laws covering their use, in practice it's unrealistic to expect them to be enforced; if you have several bursts at 3 or 4 am, you can't always tell who is doing it and it would certainly have stopped by the time the police arrived (and I really can't see them bothering, as they usually won't act on issues of noise nuisance unless they have over a certain number of calls).

I wouldn't want to see them banned. Why must a ban be slapped on everything these days?? :( We have a public display at the foot of our garden every year so you can imagine the noise and size of the fireworks we have to endure, plus the noise of the people! ;) If fireworks where limited to public displays only, how would it help people in our situation or is it a case of it's alright as long as it's NIMBY??

this post is a bit biased as it is on a dog forum :- "

however i do think that they should be limited to licensed displays and only two weekends around the 5th nov.

they should be allowed for new year, weddings etc... but only by license too, that way everyone could make arrangements for their animals in advance and it would be much safer,

this would please the ambulance, fire, police, parents and cats and dogs alike :teehee:

when we do a road rally we have to do pr first and let all the local residents know that we will be coming through their villages approx 1am for example. that way they are prepared for the 3 minutes of noisy cars, and can keep their animals in, etc...

if there are strong objections in one area we divert so as to avoid it.

if you had to do that for big displays then everyone is informed and we could enjoy the fireworks without the disruption.

i hate the fact that the fireworks go on for weeks and weeks before and after the 5th nov...where do people get the money

and another thing ... when you think of all the (sometimes necessary, sometimes bloody stupid IMO) Risk Assessments that have to be carried out for anything and everything, how come then, that explosives (fireworks) can still be sold to the general public?

Does nothing make any sense any more????

Damn right they should be banned from sale to the general public.
Quite apart from the noise and distress they cause to animals and people (not all people like fireworks), I cannot understand why they are still available for the general public to buy.  They are explosives for heaven's sake!!!

I am all in favour of organised firework displays for several reasons, the main ones being that (a) the fireworks (explosives) are in the hands of people licensed to handle them, and (b) organised displays only take up one evening.

Currently we are undergoing Bonfire Weekend, and while it's not as bad as it has been in some previous years round here, I am still cheesed off that I have to plan my whole evenings, for weeks, around avoiding fireworks.  I don't walk my dogs on a teatime because of idiots chucking fireworks around, one of my dogs is terrified of fireworks and I don't want to be walking him when louts are around, mucking about with them and letting them off at 5 pm.

sure I can call the police, but the damage is done by then.

Another thing I can't get my head round, is the cost!!  Like fallenangel says, £60 on fireworks??  Admittedly I live in Yorkshire, married to a Yorkshireman,  :- "  but if I spend say £20 on something, I want long and faithful service from it - no way would I spend £60 on something which will go up in smoke, no matter how pretty

Well, there's my two-penn'orth.

married to a yorkshire man indeed, dump him n marry a lancashire man, and put that fag out

Keith!! I am a Lancashire lass myself :) :) and I DON'T smoke :D

fire works are pointless all they do is make a loud noise and have a few pretty colours shoot up into the sky i can think of plenty of better things to waste my money on. Also ive got exams tomorro and im sitting hear and all i can boody hear is BANG BANG BANG WIZZ WIZZ bloodly BANG! We had fire works last night and one rocket didnt go properlyand crashed into the garden at the back before doing teh colour explosion thing!!!! imagin how dangerous that would of been if someone was out in their garden its pointless danger! i dunno about the noise scaring the animals it bloody scares the life outta me half the time!

in 2005 there were 255 fireworks related calls made to the RSPCA cruelty line between November 4th-6th.

a short haired cat was found by a member of public, killed by a airgun and its body abused with a lit firework in West Yorkshire, how sickening

I can understand why you are so angry about this Sarah, the displays should always be held well away from peoples houses in my opinion. that is ridiculous to hold it so close to your house - could you not complain or get a petition to have it somewhere else.

My neighbours up the road from us had their annual bash last night - Kobi slept through the whole thing but Oscar was cowering shaking and dothering - until it all stopped - over ONE HOUR of bangs cracks - louder than loud - even the large rocket sticks -several of them landed in our garden.

2 of my cats were out when it started but thankfully they are all present and correct this morning thank goodness.

If I meet her out walking (the person responsible) I am going to ask if we could have a note put through the door when they intend to hold it, at least I could be prepared

awwwwwww Mark NO WE ARE NOT!!!!!!!

would you still feel this way if for example a firework was put in your letterbox and your house caught fire or whatever or if someone did something to your dogs or kids.

worth thinking about, and it has happened sadly.

Most Definitely NOT killjoys.

Fireworks can be bought by any Tom Dick or Harry ..... they should have restrictions in my opinion and only sold on to people authorising organised displays.

Theres too many accidents, and the fire service are already under immense pressure without nights with these dangerous bloody things. there are enough nutters on the streets without having fireworks too...

besides our poor pets being terrorised.... :(

JESUS now we are scare mungering,

how would you feel if someone ran a child over (yes it's happened) would you want all cars/trucks ect banned.

I think you all need to remember it's a once a year tradition (sorry tradition counts for nothing anymore in the UK does it)

LIVE & LET LIVE

The UK is enough of a nanny state as it is, long live ID cards

forgot to ad, as a child i was hurt by a bangor i was messing with (YES MESSING) i've seen children with minor burns due to fireworks/sparklers.

fireworks dont injure people? people do!

if dogs are gotten used to loud bangs they wouldnt notice it, all our except 1 stand in the garden watching them going off (edited to add) "not in our garden but in the surrounding area".

Cars and trucks ARE licensed so that if someone is driving irreponsibly or dangerously they can be identified and dealt with appropriately. Drivers also have to pass a test to show they are competent to use them, and have insurance in case they do hurt a third party. Pity these things didn't apply to fireworks.

My grandmother did have a firework pushed through her letterbox, it does happen!
