Dudley will be coming to leave with us on Sunday (w00t) Can't wait!!!! Only 4 days

I have registered him with the vets.... When is the best time to get his first jab? Do I let him settle in for a few days, how many days? Or should I get it over and done with? I was thinking the Tuesday or Wednesday? Hmmmm i'm just not sure?

What did you guys do?

Thanks

I would play it by ear - see how settled he is, but if he's fairly relaxed I'd get him done as soon as possible, as long as he's eating well and stools are firm, I would go for it asap

:luck: :luck: :luck:

We had Penny's done 3 days after we got her, at eight and a half weeks, and she was fine. The vet crushed up a wee biscuit for her and I don't think she even noticed the jag as she was too busy munching!!

your vet will have their own policy when they think its best to have pups done

some have there first jabs at 8 weeks where some vets do them at 9 weeks.

I have had all mine vaccinated at 8 weeks. Diesel joined us on the Sunday and was vaccinated on the Monday. :)

Personally,i wouldn't have a puppy jabbed until it's at least 10 weeks old!

But,if you do have him done earlier,at least give him a week to settle in & get used to his new environment.Even a change of water can upset a young puppy,& they must be 110% fit & well before having a vaccine, otherwise they could run the risk of becoming seriously ill,or worse

I've booked him in for the tuesday morning... I told the breeder and she recommended 4-5 days? I suppose i'll see how he goes, can always reschedule if I feel he's not ready

Thanks for advice and opinions everyone :D

Your vet will advise you if your pup is not fit when you take him in. No vet will innoculate a pup if they are not 100% fit and healthy.

Yes,a vet will listen to the pups heart etc,but they don't always know if it,s a bit under the weather,ie had the squits or been sick the previous day.& not all vets will bother to ask!!!

I suppose it depends on the vet. :) I'm fortunate enough that our vet gives a thorough examination, not just the heart, and asks plenty of questions. So much so that when I took Diesel along they refused to chip him because of his skin condition. He was chipped at 12 weeks after this had cleared up. He had to be treated with an antibiotic liquid that was put on his coat. In a similar way that you would frontline but on a daily basis. I was concerned that this at the same time as injections would be too much but was assured that it was perfectly ok.

So I suppose the lesson to take from this is to make sure that you have a good vet whose judgment you trust.

I had Zulu done the day after I brought him home, he was 8 weeks and one day. They got the second jab done 2 weeks later.

I usually have mine done at 8 weeks and 12 weeks, except for OSCAR who was slightly older when I got him home.. So he was 12 and 14 weeks.

luckily Ive had no after effects with any of them.

If your vet doesn't explicitly ask exactly those questions (and cough/sneeze, behaviour etc) you need a new vet.

but

the sooner you get him vaccinated, the sooner you can begin serious socialisation - Ian Dunbar reckons a new pup should meet 100 new people in its first week (might be two) at home - particularly men and kids 'cos they tend to meet fewer of those....

if you have the vaccination, you can begin the puppy socialisation classes as well

and

fwiw, Ian Dunbar's book has a *fantastic* 'early days' regime which will sort house training, chewing and puppy barking if you follow it. I was most impressed when I read it the other night

I get mine done at no earlier than 12 weeks old, as they should still have their mums immunity ...... I do take my puppy out and about as soon as I get them, so they get used to people, cars, kids, livestock etc ... I carry them in heavily populated places and let them run around places off the beaten track :)

8 weeks and 10 weeks here, or thereabouts. With 8 dogs in the house all travelling the country racing, i'm willing the take that risk. Just means that new pup can come racing asap, i've always found they are great at traveling when they've been out and about from a young age - a bad traveler when racing would be a nightmare.
