I finally got around to updating Gullet's blog, and as I like this pic so much, I thought I'd share it with you as well.

Elvis the cat was found wandering the streets around the school where I work when he was around 4 months old. When I met him, the office staff had taken it on them to place him at the local rescue centre. I was so taken with him, I persuaded my parents to take care of him while we waited to see if any owner came forward. None did, and he has now found a permanent home with my parents.

He and Gullet are great playmates, and now they even find time to relax together now and again. He is such an outgoing cat, but has obviously had to fight for survival from an early age. He has shown himself as a tremendous predator, and has an enormous appetite. He was really skinny when first found, but it did not take long before my mum had to restrict his food (much to his dismay).

I would have taken him on myself, had it not been for the fact that he had been an outdoor cat all his life, and my parents live in the countryside, where he can enjoy the outdoors as much as he likes.

The thought of some purebred ancestor has crossed my mind. More likely a Maine Coon or a Norwegian Forest Cat in these parts of the woods (if you pardon the pun), but I guess we will never know.

My firs thought was actually that he looked a bit like my favourite breed of cat (which there is no way he could be descended from) - the Sphynx - apart from some unwanted hair growth ... He seems to be growing into his ears somewhat, though I guess they will always be rather large for a domestic cat.

I don't think particularly - a lot of nice mackerel tabbies look like that when they're young, it becomes less noticable with age though, they sort of grow into them. I don't think mine was anthing but pure moggy :b . (He did eventually learn to miaow like a siamese for his dinner from copying though (w00t) :lol: )

I think Elvis is most likely a pure moggy, too - not that it makes him any less special. :wub: He has also grown into his ears quite a bit, and his skinny condition when we first found him certainly also accentuated this feature at the time.

The only reason I mentioned those other breeds as potential ancestors, is because they are the only large-eared cats that can be found in any numbers in this area They are also the ones most likely to be kept as outdoor cats, though I guess they would be neutered or spayed then, so that pretty much rules out any possibility of any purebred influence.

Asians? I can certainly see the resemblance, but I doubt that is a possibility. I guess there is the odd Burmese around here, but I seriously doubt any owners would let them outdoors, and certainly not unaltered. Purebred cats are not that common in Norway, and their owners would probably look after them properly. Burmillas are very new and very rare, I'm not even sure they exist in Norway.

Here is my own rescue tabby, taken when he was old and fat and his ears look smaller than when he was a youngster and looked very oriental (very long and slim in the body too).

He was called 'The Psychocat', because he moved in to college with me in Oxford, and used to terrorise all my neighbours and the college staff, and attacked them if they tried to pass him in the corridors. :sweating: He moved backt to Wales with me when I finished, and lived entirely upstairs until the dog died (he did not share Elvis's tolerance of cats I'm afraid :b ).

There's quite a variation in 'moggy' type across Europe actually, the ones in South Europe are generally a little more 'oriental' in shape :wub:
