has anyone owned a hancock dog what r ur views ? ;)

Do you mean Hancock's Lurchers? If so they are Greyhound / Collie crosses of various proportions. We stayed in a hotel in Wales last year and the owner's had one. It seemed a lovely dog, and even tolerated our Chloe haring round the hotel! The owner told me that they were respected Lurcher's and showed me pictures of others on the internet. There seemed to be quite a lot on the internet if you want to do your research? Sorry i can't add anything else really.

I think this has already been discussed under the lurcher forum a month or two back if you want to do more research or get more responses on this topic.

I had a Hancock lurcher pup foster at age 10 weeks, Hancock was contacted and all he said was he was surprised because the guy that bought her seemed quite keen. She was a lovely pup and is now living the life of old riley in the country.

The pup photographed in this topic is a Hancock bred dog, it is the third I have had off him and I haven`t had a problem with any of them, as for Hancock not taking back pups how many other lurcher breeders will take pups back?? not many and that is a fact and to be honest I probably wouldn`t either in his position he keeps alot of dogs and taking a dog back is asking for disease trouble as not all lurcher owners are as good as you lot on here, yes he does breed dogs as a business but so do others the difference being the price he charges compared to a KC breed, if he was charging £350 a pup he would only need to breed half the amount of pups but how many people would buy them at this price very few I suspect, David no longer works his dogs and does not claim to, the man is 74 years of age how many people of this age are out lamping dogs ? When you buy a puppy regardless of breeder as long as it has been reared to a good standard at 8 weeks old it is down to the new owner to put the work in and rear it properly and train it properly, a lot of lurcher people could have a pup off the best dogs in the country and still mess it up IMO.

Nobody name dropped m8 a question was asked it would be hard to discuss the pro`s and con`s of a Hancock lurcher without mentioning Hancock nobody mentioned a line or said they were any better than anybody elses the fact is that when you buy a lurcher from H*****k (is that better) you know what cross you are getting and you have a fair idea what size shape and so forth it will turn out not everybody who breeds or sells lurchers are honest about the pedigree of the parents and you are pretty much buying a pig in a poke.

It is good that this question comes up regularly so that more and more people who are interested, can find out the truth, and maybe the lofty reputation that Hancock has created can be put in perspective.

There s a lot more lurchers than just Hancocks end up in re-homing centres that is down to the type of people who are attracted to the type of dog for the wrong type of reasons as an image maker for a start " yes I`m a poacher don`t you know" as for the conditions he keeps his dogs in they can`t be that bad as he get`s his breeders licence renewed each year he has an un-announced visit every year to be able to get that he has also had RSPCA visits and the inspectors have left without bringing any charges after full tour of the premises ,what people are doing is saying that he doesn`t keep his dogs in the way in which they would keep theirs but at the end of the day very few large scale dog keeperes/breeders keep them as most people keep the odd pet or brood as this would be totally impractical, look at hunt kennels, greyhound kennels/breeders and suchlike the dogs are a commodity or tool for these people I am not saying it is right but then a lot of things are not right in this world of ours if you don`t like what he does don`t buy off him.

Yep it is the owners responsibility to train their pup when they get it BUT it is also up to the breeder and dam to instil into a young pup socialisation skills and what is right or wrong! Pup's are always learning, and start to do so from a matter of weeks.IMO it is up to the breeder to start the pup off right and stand it in good stead for it's new owners which would be impossible if you were pumping out litters constantly,we have always started our pups off right and tried to socialise them which is'nt easy if you live out in the middle of nowhere as we do!! But I am pleased to say that we are known for our well adjusted even tempered pups!

whats your excuse for him keeping the dogs in the appauling conditions then? TOO OLD TO KEEP THEM CLEAN. get real mate the blokes a puppy farmer. I'd take back any pups i'd bred for the dogs sake not the owners. David hancock relied on the late brian plummer to bump his dogs up to the uneducated. Thats why so many end up in rehoming centres. He sells his pups to anyone stupid enough to want one and most of the buyers are novices believing everything he tells them.

They soon become disapointed when they don't become what he said they would.

I wouldn't buy a bloody rat from hancock

All I will say on the subject of "Hancock" is that the late D.B Plummer did indeed hold David in a certain amount of high regard BUT I feel that would not be the case anymore! Brian Plummer was a true dog lover

YAWN! What was the topic again? Oh yes, "has anyone ever owned a Hancock dog, what r ur views"...in my personal experience i have never owned a Hancock (and never will), i have seen many of them good, bad and indifferent. It is a subject that has wasted enough oxygen (in the time spent before all this this typing malarkey) and web space (these days) for me ... along with Plummer terriers etc, etc.

End of the day depends what someone wants a dog for... only thing i can say is if you want a working x...go talk to folks who work their dogs, and watch their dogs work if they take you seriously enough to let you. If you want it for agility or whatever...the same. If you want a x as a pet, take on a retired/injured worker 1st hand through associations with lurchermen or strike up a relationship with rescue..there is not a shortage of dogs by any means.

I dont think this is a YAWN - worthy subject. I am very glad that mally, with his knowlegde and experience, isnt too bored of the topic, so that he still bothers to educate those less knowledgeable.

I couldnt YAWN about it, when there are dogs being brought into the world in terrible conditions, for a gullible market who doesnt know the facts.

 Theres me assuming if anyone was that interested they would bother to look at the linked thread posted on this topic :- " Nuff said i think.

MALLY I THINK IF ANYONE HAS ANY SENSE AT ALL THEY WOULD TAKE IN ALL THAT HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT "HANCOCK" DOGS AND FORGET ABOUT EVEN NEARY TAKING ONE !!! LETS SEE WHOS GOING TO BE BLOODY DAFT AND ADD SOMETHING ELSE ON TO THIS :- "

H E R E S A T I P D O N T B U Y F R O M H A N CO C K !!!
