Hello All

I've been reading though some old posts and thought that I would say hello. I'm Paula from Northampton and am the very proud new owner of 'Golden Queen Bee' who we have christened Lily! She is 11 weeks old and we have had her for 2 weeks. She is white with fawn patches and so far, has been a little angel. We had several lurchers when I was growing up and have also had a jack russell cross but Lily is my first whippet. We thought she would be great mates with my 4 yr old son and they are getting on like a house on fire. We are starting Puppy classes this week and I'm really looking foward to it as she has already learnt 'sit' and 'down' - so proud!

Seems like there is a ton of advice on here so I wlll get reading old posts. Just a couple of questions...

Any tips to discourage chasing the cat? He has given her a few wallops but it hasn't detered her! I've been advised to squirt her with water (easier said than done when she takes off at 100mph!) or shaking a plastic bottle with gravel in to make a loud noise - this just makes the cat run faster!!

Anyone have whippets and chickens? She is fascinated with them in the run but I haven't dared let them out with her yet.

Also, I have got her a 'Silver Peacock' puppy collar. Anyone have experience of these? It's lovely and soft but is it OK to take her out with when I can start walking her in a couple of weeks?

Thanks!

Hi Paula, welcome to you and the lovely Lily. She sounds gorgeous, any chance of a photo?

I've had quite a long battle with cat chasing too (I've got four cats), although she rarely does it now that she is almost 3 years old (!). Chasing comes so naturally to them that it is a tricky one, and I've always told Grace off for it, but on the whole as long as the cats aren't getting distressed I tend to let them sort it out between them. When Grace was young I always made sure that the cats had places they could get away from her it they wanted to, where she couldn't follow, and made cosy perches for them high up. You can tell quite easily whether the chasing is playful or aggressive, and act accordingly.

I suppose my other bit of advice would be to make sure she has soft toys that she can treat a bit roughly to take her focus away from the cats.

How lovely for your son to have her to grow up with, I hope she will always be a great joy to you

Hello and welcome. Any chance of seeing some photos.

Hello and welcome :))

I too have cats and whippets . I pretty much let them sort it out themselves . One of my cats occasionally gives my pup and thump with his paw ( no claws out ) this tends to put her in her place for a while .

I also have 3 cats living with 3 male whippets here......they all get along but occasionally the dogs try getting away

with murder and chase them too...I just tell them off...the cats usually come out on top...

Like anything they can share a home together and will eventually get common ground with each other given time....

I would just try scolding the pup and saying NO loudly when he does do anything to the cat you dont approve of.

Ive had chickens here too, which my boys did try to chase, but know of others on here...who keep whippets and greyhounds quite

successfully along with hens too.

Good luck...and start as you mean to go on Id say.

Hello Everyone

Thanks for the warm welcome, you have some really beautiful dogs. I would love to post some pics of the scrumptious Lily but not sure how to do it - anyone tell me how????

The breeder did say that so long as she is brought up with the cat that they would sort it out between them and it seems from what you say that will happen -fingers crossed! Funny think is, the 3 legged cat from next door has so far been the bravest and yet he's slower than the rest. For the first time earlier she did listen when I said 'no' and stopped and sat down - probably just a fluke, but i'll take it as a step in the right direction! I'm distracting her with one of her toys each time...

Can I ask, is it a good idea to get a puppy martingale collar, as well as the one I already have, for the training classes and the walking? Is the martingale OK to use this young?

Thanks!!

Paula xx

For putting photos on if you go on to the section on here called " Help and Ideas " you should find all the info you need . You are best to put your photos on to Photobucket and then on to here . Even I can do it so it must be easy !

Never had a Martingale collar I just have a puppy collar then progress to leather whippet collars so can't be of any help to you about that :))

I'd only use a wide (at least an inch) martingale, they can have delicate necks, so don't use anything narrow in case she gives it a good yank

Welcome to the forum...piccies are a must!

I use photobucket!!

What a beautiful puppy....just gorgeous.. Im sure you are in strore for lots of fun.

they are brilliant photos..and well done for uploading them so quickly. We will only want more... :)

Yes a wide collar is a must for a whippet...you can also buy small leather fishtail collars, and as Claire says some beautiful small martingale collars too

in puppy sizes too. There are some links in the market place on here to purchase collars ...coats etc...some really nice people and beautiful merchandise .

I think she is adorable too... thanks everyone!! She has just sat and watched the season finale of 24 with me and hubby - can't believe she watches the telly!!

Feeling reassured that so many of you have happy cats and hounds. I'm looking foward to getting to know you all and your lovely dogs and keeping you up to day with Lil's progress...

I'll check out the market place too...

Haha!! Actually, so far she had been fairly angelic, although I know there is plenty of time for the little devil to kick in too!! LOL!!

Hi Paula!

Welcome!

Lily is just beautiful! What a gorgeous little face!

I have two whippets and one cat - they muddle along ok, but I must say that I keep a close eye on them when they're in close proximity! A lot depends on the cat - my old KitKat (who I lost last year at the grand old age of 19) was fine when we got Spooky as a pup - she even taught him to use her litter tray which came in quite handy when the weather was bad and he refused to go outside  . My other cat Mystic is a different kettle of fish. It took her a few years to get used to Spooks, but when Scout joined us last year, she pretty much accepted her, as long as Scout didn't try and take liberties with her tail :D Spooky is actually scared of Mystic (she has a mean left hook), and will howl for someone to rescue him if he's stuck upstairs and Mogs is sitting on the stairs blocking his descent. Scout has yet to learn manners around Mogs, but we're getting there!

Keep us posted on Lily's progress!

Terry.
