Help!! Poopy puppy

Hi everyone, my girlfriend and I are hoping to get some advice from experienced dog owners.

We have a 3 month old yellow lab boy who currently has on and off diarrhoea, because of this he missed his second jab at 10 weeks as the vet wouldn’t give it to him due to the runs.

He was prescribed antibiotics and caniqur pro paste, which seemed to help but then the runs returned. We have tried bland chicken and again the runs seem to pass and then they come back.

He’s also been on Step Up, Royal Canin, Wainwrights and after establishing the food doesn’t seem to be the problem he is currently on Wellness Core and we are not planning to change this.

He was finally able to have his first jab again on Tuesday and since then the dreaded runs have returned, we are hoping it’s just side effect of booster however to be safe we have given the vet 3 days worth of stool samples for testing however he didn’t seem overly concerned with it.

He’s also had the usual flea and worm treatment, his stools are blood free and you can’t see any worms or foreign objects either, sometimes there is the occasional mucus but nothing major. We’ve given him some Johnson’s diarrhoea tablets and this has slowed him down so we can’t comment if he still has the runs at the moment.

Overall he is a happy hyperactive character and isn’t demonstrating any signs of stress or illness.

We are just a little worried as we go abroad in August and if he doesn’t have his last jab our friends who were planning on having him won’t be able to due to them having dogs.

I think I’ve covered everything but please ask any questions that I may have missed and please help, I don’t think we can take much more early hours crate cleaning lol.
 
Back to the vet.. proper blood work and get the results of the stool samples asap. You need to know the cause of this rather than just treating the symptoms.
 
Yes to the above and please stop changing food - in a three month old pup, four foods is a lot of change. Can you give him a probiotic like live natural yoghurt to help his gut flora recover?

I get what you’re saying however the vet only requested a stool sample at this moment in time, he’s a very reputable vet who we’ve trusted for years with out other animals so I trust his judgment.

I didn’t think about yoghurt, is there any specific brand that you could recommend? When I say we’ve changed his food the step up and wainrights he ate once and turned his nose up at it. The Royal Canin was for two weeks as recommended by the vet although the for the price it wasn’t really making a difference.

We read about Wellness Core and so far he’s been a very happy boy on it as he gets very excited and feedin times which he didn’t on the Royal Canin
 
Did the diahorrea continue while he was on the bland chicken, or when you moved him back to his normal food? I ask because my dog had soft/runny poos on every food I tried until I converted to feeding raw, so I'm wondering if the food could be part of the problem. Not that it's a good idea to change his diet while he's having tests, but maybe something to consider if all the tests come back normal.

Since we’ve had his never had a rock hard poop, it’s always been formed but soft but it could be picked up without breaking. When the runs started the chicken did make it go back to his usual consistency so we then weaned him onto the Wellness and he was fine for a few days and then after his boosters it came back.

Ideally we’d like to keep him on dry food if possible although I’m open to using the natural yoghurt as a topper.

No accidents overnight and touch wood he seems back to normal. Whenever he eats he always wants to poop straight after and this morning was a lot harder than normal.

I’m hoping the samples will come back clear and that the issue was just a combination of the residual effects of whatever the antibiotics were treating and because he’s had his booster as I’ve read it can give them an upset tummy for upto 76hours?
 
That's good. Puppies do poo straight after a meal, that is normal - it helps with toilet training as it is a predictable time for you to get him out!

I’m glad to hear that’s the case as he’s usually like clockwork. He’s really good in that department as he taps the door to tell us he needs the loo.

He hasn’t quite mastered wee’s and occasionally goes in the house if we’re not quick enough but overall he’s a clean boy.

We have to introduce him to new people in the kitchen as we have laminate and when he gets excited he dribbles everywhere
 
The excitement weeing usually stops when they develop better control of their muscles :)
 
The suggestion of "Natural live Yoghurt" can help, any make is fine, just no flavorings though!
Keep your kibble grain free as grains are not easy for our canine companions to digest.
Try giving less food/kibble, keeping him a little hungry and always looking for his next feed is absolutely fine!

As suggested Raw would probably be the best option, and in my opinion too.
It is not messy or smelly, it is easy to purchase, thaw and use as required.
Puppies change over very easily to raw without tummy upsets.

If you should need a little help with understanding why Raw should be suggested there is a handy little book "Honeys Natural Feeding Handbook for dogs". This can be purchased for as little as 1p on amazon, or FREE if you register with the "Honey's" website, where you will not get any emails pestering you to purchase from them!
 
It's good to hear he seems better - long may it last!
 
Thanks for all your responses, so far so good regarding his poops.

His wellness core is wheat and grain free so it looks like we’re at least heading in the right direction.

I will look at feeding raw as it’s been suggested a few times.

It's hard to know the cause....We were feeding raw meat and mixer...then moved to royal canin. the vet has prescribed some tins of food now plus something to restore the good stuff in her stomach. I didn't know about the yoghurt - good idea. The current bout of poopiness has been 3 days which is concerning. It's a real pain to clean/collect too!!!

Rubber gloves are on every morning and I've just been to buy a new stash of puppy training pads.

Just be aware that more change in diet can upset the digestive bacteria further. Royal Canin isn't the greatest, may i ask why did you change from raw to that?
 
What food did the vets give you? -> Royal Canin? If it is what one A/d or I/d? Read the tin and it should tell you...

Sorry, I should have been clearer. We were feeding her mince and mixer, cottage cheese and mixer, then moved to royal canin for dalmatians as i was so confused about what a dalmatian should eat that i though this would answer all my questions as they have researched and prepared the right food for dalmatians.
She did seem ok on this, so it's not likely the looseness kicked in straight away.
Then we went to the vets after she vomitted - only once - also and she gave us a few tins of, I think, Hills - blue and white tin.
That's finished now so we're not quite sure what to do now. We've got an enormous bag of royal Canin.
The treatment provided by the vet is now complete (it also included a syringe of something to feed her for the good bacteria), though overnight she still had an accident in the house - loose.
i'm interested to read about the yoghurt. might try that?

What was your problem with feeding raw to your puppy?
Which mixer were you using?
