Dear Dog Forum members,

I am the owner of four small breed dogs :); Layla, Kenji, Pretty and Xena.
I am posting this thread with permission of Josie Thynne. Josie, thank you for letting me start this thread.

Aside from loving my four little dogs, I am a researcher at the University of Southampton (UK) and am working with Dr. Prof. Anne McBride, specialised in human-animal interactions (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/psychology/about/staff/amcb.page).

We are currently running a big study and need a lot of participants. The main interest is people's perceptions of humans, animals and our relation to/with animals.

I am posting the link to the study and the following information so that some of you, if you wish to, can participate in our study. I would greatly appreciate if some fellow dog enthusiasts here participated.

The study is online, you can complete it in the privacy and anonymity of your home. Everything is anonymous, there is no way to track answers to a person, and you can quit whenever you want if you should feel uncomfortable. Or you can skip questions if you want to do so.
All data is stored in a secure environment and will be destroyed after the statutory time, in accordance to the data protection act.

We are still looking for a big variety in participants and were hoping some people on this forum would participate in the study...

The link takes me to a page headed 'Outlook Web App' and asks for a user name and password. Is this correct?

I went past the first page quickly to test it out, and noticed that the next page said I needed to make sure that I wouldn't be disturbed. Would it be possible to give some information on why this is the case? Is there a reason why I couldn't, say, start it, stop to watch something interesting on telly, and then come back to it later? I ask because I tend to fit in most of my 'internetting' round other 'stuff'.

The study has two parts, one part where you need to perform some tasks on your laptop and one part with questions. The computer tasks do require some attention, otherwise they are not valid measurements. During these tasks it is not ideal to have anything disturb your attention. You will notice it yourself too, the tasks can be a bit challenging to keep focused. Attention is of less importance during the questions part.

Because the tasks can take a while and they can be challenging, the study does offer breaks. So you can start, perform some tasks and when the screen says it's time for a break you can take a break. As long as you don't close the window you can stop at a break and go on a bit later. But don't close the window.

I am glad you found it an interesting experience. This is a good example of how a lot of psychology research is conducted. If you want I can post the results of the research here once the study finishes, these would be a full explanation of the what/why/how of the study and what the conclusions are.

As you assume correctly, the content should not be discussed into too much detail as we don't want to influence others :)

To go back to the first page with explanations, the information sheet, just close the tab and open the link again. This will start the experiment all over.

Other instructions should be understood before clicking on next because there is no going back there :).

okay thanks i just was very confused. why do you have to be 18+?

Because 18 or above is the legal age to be able to fully consent to participating in research.
This differs in some countries but since the study is being conducted in the UK, participants need to be 18 or above.
