Alfie's about 22" and his weight is usually around 38-40lbs depending on how fussy he's being with his food each week :- " He's from show lines :teehee:

I've been told that some show breeders in this country have been breeding whippets taller for the american market. I don't know if this is true or not.

I have recently seen some large show type whippets which made my jess ( 21" & 26lb) look like a midget. There was no muscle tone to them and they were really thin on the shoulders i only hope this is not a sign of the breed in the future. I for one will breed for working ability and temprement.

my two boys that i show are at opposite ends, rupert is quite fine and about 20inch wheres charlie is heavier and about 22 inch  but i love them both

Even the Americans have height restrictions,Ideal for dogs 19 to 22ins for bitches 18 to 21 ins one inch above or below will disqualify,as from AKC standard. ;)

Tascha is my dainty girl, she's 17" and weighs 7.5kg, she is racing bred. Mysti on the other hand is show bred, and is 21" and weighs 11.9kg.

charlies just under 20" but another whippet i had in the past, tom, was around 18, and a lot stockier, he was alot rounder aswell and deeper chested the breeder we got him from explained that the breed lines play a big part in bone structure and size, eg, show lines, coursing and racing lines, tom was alot more robust than the whippets i've seen in the south, but the southern ones seem to have more flowing lines, dunno if anybody else agrees,

Andrea I can't believe Ella is heavier than your Tascha, she weighs 8.35 kg today, sorry I don't know her height, she's always in the horizontal position :- " o:)

Digger is 21 and a 1/2 and weighs 37-38 lbs . Some judges (mainly breed specialists) discount him and any other like sized whippets on account of their size, others as JAX said make an overall assessment of the animal. He does better under allrounders and Australian and American judges. Unlike show bred greyhounds which never race or course due mainly IMHO to their size.

Showbred whippets are capable of holding their own coursing and lure coursing.

My biggest is Owen he is 20 1/2inches and weighs 17.5 kilos about 38 lbs
If we are at an open show and he is in a class of bitches he looks huge but at a champ show competeing against his own sex he does not look big

Owen

he's very much like my boy Sunny, in looks and size, he was a bit of a 'biggie' in his day and he is the opposite to what I was looking for - but I wouldn't change him for the world!

and when some americans saw him at a pet show last summer, they thought he was the best whippet they'd seen since getting here, even if he was 10 years old at the time (w00t)

i agree , they do seem to be growing (w00t)

i have to admit i do like "femenine" bitches and "masculine" males

jan is 19 " and 11 kilos

mouse is 19 1/2 and 10. 7 kilos

last measure a week ago :- " kobi was nearly 17 " and 9 kilos but is only 5 months old so not sure if this is right at his age ??????????

There has ALWAYS been the odd `taller` whippet . I read an article in the Northeren counties whippet Golden Jubilee  book and there was a whole chapter on the `larger whippet in the ring ! with the same  sizes we have now  :- " dated 1960s`

and i'm afraid to say that some of these monsters have beaten them  , think some judges need the breed standard slapping about their heads

Size is just one fault of many  :- "  Id sooner have a Good `bigun ` than a BAD little`un  ;) .............Im not saying yours are bad littleuns

A dog should be judged as a whole , not by size  o:)

i agree but then why have a breed standard stating size ? being too big is a fault in itself but i see exactly where your coming from

i would be happier for a slightly over the standard height dog but otherwise good specemin win over a correct sized dog that had flaws but i would be ashamed to show a bitch close to 22 inches that was more masculine than my dog

Mmm ... I could not cope with a 21-22inch bitch or a 22-23 inch dog. Not here on my own turf anyway. They just don't seem "whippety" anymore when they get to those heights. I would prefer to keep my own dogs to the standard - although it's getting harder all the time.

If I lived in America where the standard is higher - well, when in Rome, do as the Romans do, as the saying goes.

what is making them bigger - is it feeding, simply, like children are getting bigger, too?

People just keep using big dogs on big bitches I guess :(

Size is definitely an inherited trait (within certain margins), you cannot make a breed bigger just by feeding more. For the breed to be getting so much bigger you have to selectively breed the biggest from available dogs. I think it is a great pity to allow Whippet as a breed to be getting so big. I have one 48.5cm bitch and her grandmother is 49.5cm, they look like midgets next to some other bitches in the show. I feel the ones of correct size are just right as housedogs, and the size is definitely something I consider when I am choosing a stud dog.

Monty is the same age and measurements as kobi! I wondered if this was right for his age too? Everyone we meet comments on what a large whippet he is.

:b Thats the best excuse Ive heard yet . (w00t)

I dont know of ANYONE who breeds for `top`size whippets on purpose . By doing so we will lose `type` completely , I must admit from photos and of those I saw when I went to the WESTMINSTER show in NEW York :- " . many of the American bred whippets do have the look of Greyhounds , the heads being the main thing :( Attractive they may be , but loseing the whippet head would IMO be terrible

With me being very very new to showing, correct me if im wrong but for the likes of say Dashunds (sp?) dont they weigh them? Is that something to do with a weight limit as per breed standards?

I know there isnt 'a perfect dog' that has all the qualities as set by the breed standards but somebody somewhere mustve started breeding bigger whippets purposely.

It pees me off big style when people say to me that if i was showing 10 years ago i would have a 'perfect' whippet

Rebel is due to start showing again so im gonna have 2 dogs at both ends of the scale.

Dachies just the mini size must not be over 11lb for showing

My two are both 20.5" :D

It always amazes me the poeple who say their dog is 20" even though it towers over mine, Archie is always nearly the smallest in the ring.

But I would hate to see automatic disqualification for dogs a fraction outside the top end measurement. Imagain a near perfect specimen (in your eyes of course) has to be thrown out of the ring cos it is just over the top measurement - and then the best remaining dog in the ring still has a lot of bad faults - but it is the right size! Crazy!

It is up to all breeders at the end of the day to try and ensure the whippet 'type' is continued. That is why breeding should always be considered so carefully as it determines the future of the breed.

Some of those pictures of 'whippets' at the breed assesment seminar were scary - like Jax said the heads had loss the whippet characteristics completely :(
