Whats the best method to stop a puppy jumping?

I've been with a gorgeous lab puppy this afternoon and I had forgotten about all the jumping now having a 10 year old.. I tried the technique where I turn my back overtime he jumped. Is that right?

Also, how do you stop this during play? Do you need to stop it during play time also or can they learn the difference?

My view is that dogs have a hard time understanding that any behaviour is ok some times but not other times.

Tips for stopping jumping - if it's when you walk in, scatter some food on the floor. Ask for an incompatible behaviour like a sit. Only reward when all four feet are on the ground. Also make there no need to jump up by going down to his level. Turning your back and walking out are also good if you want to give the message that this behaviour (whatever it may be) causes play and attention to stop.

Everyone needs to be consistent. When we first got T I was working full time and i don't think everyone in this family was. He will still jump in some situations. When he does that i ask once for a sit, then wait until he does that (he knows what he is meant to do and repeating the cue just teaches that complying first time is optional - which it's not) before rewarding.

In addition to what Joanne has said, check for triggers. Triggers for Jasper were wide open spaces or wide paths, and longer walks (think overtired hyped up toddler). So we clung to field edges, and as narrow paths as possible, and tried to keep walks short. I also tended to stick to walks next to fences or trees so if he started up I could wrap his lead round the fence or tree to physically stop him. Which isn't ideal, but he was beyond listening to requests for alternative behaviour and was taller than me when he jumped up...

Apart from that, I'd turn away (hanging onto a convenient tree or fence), fold my arms and ignore him, then I'd praise him when he stopped. There came a stage when he'd run towards me with 'that' look in his eye and then would pull up and turn away at the last moment, then I'd praise and treat the hell out of him.

Mind you, he only ever jumped up on me and OH, and not other people, which made consistency easier. It must be maddening when your dog jumps up on someone else and they make a fuss of him.

thanks @JudyN - It's not great to have a dog come and jump at you when you're out! usually I can spot the signs of a potential jumper (usually they're bounding over and their bum can't stop wiggling!)

what do you do when you praise then for not jumping but then the praise makes them jump at you again!? this is what was happening.

We have a local lady who always has dog treats and it's actually quite annoying because while T will run to her if he sees her, what's worse is that he has learned from her that pockets exist for carrying treats. So he will also expect treats from anyone who has their hand hovering near a pocket. While he at least doesn't normally jump, he does do a meerkat dance unless I can catch his attention and divert him. Sorry to be so bad tempered about it but it seems to have stemmed from this one b*****y woman!

try to divert T to something else other than the woman very rarely does olive get a treat and when she does its about once every 4 months

I think I'd probably just turn away and ignore them again. Repeat, repeat, repeat. And don't wear anything that you don't want to get pawprints on because that'll make it harder to keep calm.

Jasper can also be a pain whenever someone puts their hands in their pockets. In general, though, he only pesters the people he knows that pester power works on. There's a couple of people that he will jump up on, or at least throw a paw at, but they're people who have rewarded it, and have given him more treats after saying 'all gone', so I don't feel too bad about it

This was one of the most difficult things to teach Evie. She now does it much less often but not sure it's because of my training or her growing up a bit (now 20mnths). We used to put her on lead if we saw people approaching especially if they didn't have dogs with them. Problem not helped by some people loving cute puppies and saying I don't mind at all when she launched herself at them. I'm constantly muttering 'off'if I think she might jump when needed. She now knows not to but has difficulty in containing her excitement. I would never encourage jumping during play and this would in fact stop play for a short while. As Joanne said consistency is the key.
