I just adopted this 20 lb. dog that the shelter listed as a lab mix. He's a year old and 20 inches tall. I think he has some whippet in him. He's super fast and very mellow around the house. Check out the pics and let me know what you think!

Beagles have much thicker tails, and also the colouration is different (even with a cross) although there maybe some in there?

I would say that it is unlikely to be any Whippet in him, he is probably crossed with several breeds so it makes it difficult to guess any one breed.

Whatever he is he's gorgeous. Well done you for giving him a lovely home and I hope you have a lovely life together. :)

I think it was his eyes that made me think Beagle in there somewhere. He looks like a nice chap

Thanks for all your replies! I think he has some type of hound in him. Here's a standing view:

The ears suggest a bit of Saluki in the mix, maybe?

Lovely face ...... he has the most melting brown eyes

Great Dane maybe... :teehee:  or even greyhound.....whatever hes a gorgeous boy...

I would have said Beagle in the mix too - or possibly Trailhound looking at those ears.

He's a very nice looking dog, whatever he is - and sounds a great character too

Beagle crossed with large fawn Whippet (or Whippet cross) could easily be this colour. It is hard to tell in picture, but the tail, coat and body build does certainly look bit Whippety. At 20" he is definitely NOT a Great Dane cross.

Anyway, whatever he is he looks lovely  :)

What a lovely looking boy! We used to have a Beagle and I have to say I am convinced he has Beagle in him, good luck with him..

Thank you to everyone that responded! I'm new here and the warm welcoming is very nice. ;)

I've never heard of the Saluki before so I've got a new breed to research!

I ordered a DNA test for mixed dogs so hopefully that will shed some light on my one-year old pound puppy.

He's a total sweetheart but very timid around new people and other dogs (he's defensive around unleashed dogs when he's on-leash). I've got my hands full in regards to socializing him.

A couple of people have suggested pit bull, but I think he has some type of hound in him. I'll post the results of the DNA test once I have it back from the lab!

DNA results are in and the lab thinks he's a chihuahua poodle???

I think you should ask for your money back (w00t)
I've already filed a request with the company to re-test, especially as the dominant breed was chihuahua! lol He's 25lbs and 20 inches tall which is HUGE for either breed. The animal shelter listed him as a lab mix and he does have the soft retriever mouth, but no mention of that breed in the report.

What a ridiculous way to spend $80

P.S. I have a kitty named FeeFee

These sort of test are notoriously unrelieble. If you use another company you will most likely get totally different result. My bet is still mostly beagle, with possibly some Whippet and probably other breeds. 20" is the size of Whippet, one of his parents may be Whippet or Whippet cross, the other a beagle.

Even the internet tests for people; be it paternity tests or tests to find people's ethnicity. are similarly unrelieble, I have heard of people who trying to test the acuracy, sent their samples to number of different companies and got totally different result from each.
