I wouldn't say that is hypocritical; not every instance of doggy dressing up is a symptom of something more sinister. The issue is a lot wider than that, and is fairly mild compared to things like feeding dogs on diets that include chocolate or large quantities of junk food for instance; that sort of thing disturbs me far more.

I suppose I am slightly hypocritical with the Christmas outfits in that I obviously feel it's fine to do this, but get as upset at the next person to see dogs being treated either like toys, or as Moriate has said, like humans.

I think there are far too many serious cases of dog neglect and cruelty.Worrying about whether people dress up their dogs is very low on my list of 'things to ban' :b

You love your dogs, you treat them well (I presume!) so what does it matter if you put a Christmas hat on them once or twice a year?

My thoughts as well Helen.

I don't really have a problem with dressing dogs up. After all, we put coats, jumpers and pyjamas on them (in a variety of our chosen colour schemes), and we buy them fancy collars when plain ones would be just as good. :- " :- "

I think they do love the attention they get, and as long as it is kept in moderation, such as special occasions, I think it ok.

It's not something I would choose to do but as it's Christmas I thought I'd let you off!

again i think its the degree of dressing up .

i love these piks and they do not offend me at all :D

when you see the celebs 8) etc with the real diamond collars , an outfit for every occasion and as stated treating them like children then no i do not agree with that .

but this is harmless fun , your dogs are dogs and as you say this is another thing that they enjoy and get to spend time with you :huggles:

i agree to coats to keep dogs warm and dry , all mine have a couple each and when i got the coat for bliss i had a choice of a pretty pink one or a more practical one :- "

when she grows up a bit she has a green waterproof , sheepskin lined one waiting practical as the day is long , but how could i resist this :- "

my lot have fancey coats and jumpers but there atualy only warn when its wet or colds just cos there pink dosnt mean there not practical :D . since. I suppose its what you call dressing up. if my lot are out and getting wet or cold and shiviring or not getting exrecise cos its raining and the coats get them out well the coats going on and as i make them myself there differnt to most but serve the purpose.

i dont think I even have any pics of mine wearing what i would call dress up clothe like santa hat but if i did santas hat would have to be hunted and kill prity quick aftery the pic was taken. a frend of mine did buy me a velvet jingaly coller and matching leg cuffs they looked like giant scrunches for your hair and i tryed them on for all of 30 seconds and they have been put away since

are these dress up or just prtical coats in pink

Wendy - yours are practical! Do you know how hard it is to find pink whippet coats? (w00t) Nobody wants to be practical all the time surely? :p

I would never dress any of mine up, but then they've only got one lead and one collar each, I can't spend my money that way, I need it for entries. (w00t) As it's Christmas I'll let you off, Goodwill to all men and whippets in frocks. :huggles:

Love Jenny and the gruesome twosome.

I voted against, I don't like to see any dog 'dressed up', never mind whether they are Whippets or not.
You knew that was coming Tracy

I know there are those who don't agree with rugging their dogs up in cold/wet weather but that is a different issue altogether, that is done for a purpose.  I cannot see any justification for dressing dogs up other than ridicule.

:- " :- " :- " But there are coats and there are COATS !!! :p

Well you all know me - I have a collar/coat/accessory addiction. I do dress mine up in costume for the fancy dress class at a Companion Show - so yes I do have stuff to dress them in - but it's for fun, and usually around the holidays.

Having said that, last year and this I haven't even brought out the Christmas stuff - mostly because helpful hubby put it away somewhere safe....

What we used to do and the dogs THRIVED on it, was put their coats on along with their Gentle Leaders and antlers and go sit in the town centre as it got near to Christmas. It made people smile and the dogs ate up the attention.

So yes, I do dress them up - but just for fun, and not too often (by my definition LOL).

Wendy

I am not into dressing my puppy up, would get told off by hubby........... BUT if it is christmas and I am making next years christmas cards :b

Ive done it too :b   so yes guilty....
but Im not a fan of dressing up outfits for dogs, and really think they should not be sold in shops as I think it may encourage children to dress dogs up.

I have admired peoples pictures on K9 but would never put a full outfit on mine - just a personal thing.

so it was a No each to their own..... :)

What a beautiful pup...... same olouring as our Sidney :D

I think it totally depends on the dog.

I dont ever put a coat on Vader as he hates them - I've tried in the past for his own good when it's been cold or very wet but he can not relax and enjoy a walk so I dont bother now. I wouldnt dream of dressing him up as I know he'd be mortified. However I always rug up 'the whipetses' and Leia. 2 years ago I made red coats and trimmed them with white fluff so they were like Santa outfits - but just coats to Star, Leia and Holly. We had a great walk on the beach on Christmas day and people came to speak to us because of it, so they did get more attention. They wore them last year too :D

Some dogs would lap up the attention of being dressed up for a photo shoot (what else would they be doing on a dark cold wet windy night?) and some would be horrified. Knowing Jake and Ollie a little bit I think they will have loved it and seeing the photos definately made me smile.

I'm all for it. It's only a bit of fun for Christmas.

Don't think dogs mind too much if we have a giggle at their expense and there's usually treats on offer if they sit still long enough to get a photo.

Now anyone dressing up dogs in silly outfits every day, are perhaps missing something in their life. (w00t)

Thanks for all of the votes and comments so far everyone

It seems there are differing opinions out there, but I think it's been a good thread :D

For the people out there who "need the website to order those costumes"........

Dapper Dogs :- "

I'm not really into dressing up just because they look gorgeous naked  (Andy would have a fit if I did) but even if I was I couldn't they would eat each others outfits anyway (w00t) o:)

Mine all wear coats in winter though and always will, some people don't agree with that either  I think its entirely up to you they're your dogs, you love them :huggles: and wouldn't do it if it was stressful for them, it's just a bit of fun :D

I could not be bothered to dress up my dogs (except if they are cold) but one of my friends does make special parti dresses for her dogs to go to her grandchildren's ( and her childrn's in the past) parties. These dogs seem to really enjoy the attention they are getting. But normally, these dogs live healthy dog lives.

However, once I saw a program about dogs in NY, one poor creature (maltese X) living on umpteenth floor on Manhattan, would start her day with a shower, and then would be dressed in ridiculous flouncy dress and fed junk like sweet biscuits and tea of the table. That made me so sad.

that web sit is fab and if indy breaks any more bones whitch is very likly we might get the doggy trollie /back pack looks easyer to get about with than her buggy call it degrading or not she wont be left at home when she breaks bones as long as she is happy and can get about we dont care when we all look like

What an interesting thread.

As many know, who follow the Zoomie stories on the Iggy forum, I take heaps of photos of my dogs and often put 'humanised' stories to them. These photos are rarely posed and the dogs are so used to the camera now they think it's part of me and they love the attention they get.

Once a year they go to a Christmas party at our dog club and wear an outfit for the fancy-dress parade. They all get heaps of treats and photos taken and seem to love the attention. It's all done for fun and considering the level of depravity in the cruelty suffered by so many dogs I don't consider it degrading because it's done while they are surrounded by love. They wear the outfit for twenty minutes of cuddles and photos and then the outfit comes off and they get treats and games. Hardly a hardship.

But I do worry about the idiots who 'dress' their dogs every day in silly 'human-type' clothes and treat their dogs like little dolls or babies. EUGHHHHHH!!! :x My dogs are dogs first and last, thank goodness!!!!

Coats as weather protection are necessary for iggies and whippies here in the NE of Scotland, and my lot go wappy with excitement when the coats come out because they're going for a walk... and get to stay warm and dry.

well ninnys nearly 16 weeks old and shes found the dogs coat cubbourd and brought us her coat for a walk think she might like dressing up
