Jasper chose to go to the woods today, somewhere we haven't been for months as it's a relatively long walk for him. too long, really, but he was keen, and if he had a bucket list the woods would be on it. 24 acres of stunning woodland, with a couple of fields, a stream and a few ponds, and even a badger sett to (carefully) sniff around. The colours of the trees and fallen leaves were stunning, it was a sight for sore eyes, and my photo doesn't do it justice at all.

It'd be nice to think he'll be so tired out he won't cry and bark till 1am, but I'm not counting on it:confused: I have an Adaptil diffuser on order...
 
What a lovely thing to do for him. I hope you each get a peaceful night from it.

Actually, we did:) Though I'm not sure how much that was to do with the long walk. You may remember I've posted about him getting iffy when Mr N gets up to go to bed (about an hour after I've gone). We never did manage to crack that, and since he's stopped sleeping well, he'd started to get unsettled soon after I'd gone to bed. So last night, I went to bed late and Mr N went to bed early, so we both went at the same time. There the walk did help, as J wasn't telling me it was my bedtime at 9.30pm, but he stayed settled all the way through and slept through till 6am.

So we'll carry on aiming to go to bed at the same time, which means Mr N can go through his normally triggering routine while J is in the garden, and see how we go. We need a fingers crossed smiley....
 
Apparently it's not too cold to have a little snooze on your walk.... Not when you have rufty-tufty deerhound genes, anyway. He doesn't care that I'm a soft Southerner.

No, he’s sleeping the sleep of an innocent. Inspirational. A propos at nighttime, is he more relaxed?

He's been up and down, but he's slept through the last couple of nights so hopefully, the meds, DAP diffuser, change in routine and so on are helping. Actually, the last two nights I gave him half a paracetamol with his tea, even though he doesn't seem to be in any discomfort, so maybe they helped? He had originally been having half a paracetamol with his breakfast but we stopped that as it didn't seem to make any difference.

So for the time being, he's happy, and I'm getting enough sleep. That probably will change, but we just take one day at a time:)
 
Poor old Jasper is going to have to give up the bones :( He's never been great at digesting bone but it's never caused a problem. I had been noticing a bit more 'shrapnel' in his poos though, and yesterday spotted a bit of blood in the poo - when I picked it up, there was a very sharp bit of bone right where the blood was :eek:

I'm hoping I can adjust a 'mince only' diet to suit him, as he does tend towards the soft and squidgy and less bone could make that worse. Not sure if I should have a think about introducing something else to keep his teeth clean, or whether they're good enough now to last as long as they need to....

His food bills will go up, as chicken carcasses are much cheaper than mince, but on the bright side I shouldn't have to mop the conservatory floor where he normally dumps the carcasse before eating it. Silver lining...
 
Would HiLife Special Care Dental Chews be any use? Mabel really enjoys them - they do keep her busy.
 
How long does it take her to eat them? Jasper being a guarder, we have to be really careful with what he has. When he was younger, if he had a long-lasting chew he would bring it over to eat close to us, and then growl at us because we were too close....:confused:

I'm wondering about chicken feet - he had some at a friend's house and really enjoyed them.

There is plenty of minces about with minced bone content...maybe those will be enough to keep his poos firmer?

Are you able to 'section' him to a chewing area while you are still nearby for his comfort and keep eye on him? And maybe then take the chew off him while he goes to garden/walkies so he is restricted with his teeth cleaning sessions?
 
Fish4Dogs do some fish-skin dental sticks that can be scrunched up straight away, and the fish oils put a lovely shine on their coats. Babydog really likes them, and she has become very fussy with her food because of her illness.

Yep, ours have them too and even they are otherwise fussy eaters when it comes to fish....skin flatties or chews go down really well.

We section him off now when he has his carcasse, but wouldn't be able to remove the chew. If for any reason he's off his food and won't eat it, we still have a real problem separating him and the food safely.

His current mince is already bone-in, though I dare say some varieties (those with no offal) are higher than others. Back in the past, the company sold bone powder, so I could find out if they still do that.

Hmm...I know one time there was such a thing available as 'sterilized bone meal' for garden use and it didn't have any added chemicals with it. I know it was used for animal feeding as well. But I don't know if general garden bonemeal is suitable/acceptable anymore....certainly it is not guaranteed to be 'clean' from contaminants from the factory. Hmm...I can feel some googling session coming on...

She’s just finished a chew with total concentration in just under 12 minutes. I did give her chicken feet which she really enjoyed until they started getting very greasy. Perhaps it was via a certain supplier but it may have been these that gave her (forgive me) the squits. Hence my switching to the HiLife chews.

I would respectfully suggest keeping right away from bone meal destined for animal feed. Look what happened last time (BSE).
