Just to say hi! ive had a look around and thought this will be the best place to post!

My names Tom, im moving into my first house within a month or so (hopefully if the dam solicitor sorts himself out  ) my partner and I was looking at finding out first dog together to give us a companion and a friend to love! (plus spending all our money on the house going for walks to give us something to do!  ) This brings us to the whippet, i love the greyhound there nature and characteristics, my partners uncle has an ex racer however we think a greyhound may be abit big for us (only being 22 there may be some little Toms running around in a few years :b ) and the whippet was recommended to us by a good friend! abit smaller and from what i can gather behave like the greyhound!

We had a look around out local dog kennels which was upsetting for Tash (my partner) we saw lots of x's collies and an ex racing greyhound however the whippet has won my heart! As much as its hard seeing dogs that have been unloved I know they will all find a home ( eventually ).

I would love a pedigree blue or tan male whippet pup with some family history could anyone reccomend a breeder? the only reason behind a male was from previous posts ive read they seem abit more loyal. Not interested in racing (as we have a cat and would need to bring they together in harmony :) ) Maybe the odd show unless we get hooked) Any tips etc would be nice! Also what insurance companies are recommended? Is Microchiping worth it or are tattos better or both?

Hope to post alot more on here once we have our baby ( who knows might put her off having kids abit longer lol   :- " o:) ) Who knows might get the whippet bug

Many thanks

Tom

hello and welcome! great to see you taking so much time and effort in finding the right dog for you and your family , we look forwards to seeing pics of your new whippy baby when you get one! plenty of contacts on here for you and loads of good advice , welcome aboard!

Welcome to K9 Tom and Tash. I am sure you will find the ideal companion here when you are ready to take the plunge. What part of the country are you ?.

Thanks for the speedy replies! Were in Wolverhampton, West Mids. if there are any local people on here who lives local mabe we could come a see your whippets? ive brought a whippet book by Juliette Cunliffe im yet to read! Whats the usual food for whippets and what ar the views on dog crates? ( i know do a search )

welcome to k9

im sure you will find all the info your looking for on here and in books , one of the best books to buy is "the whippet" by j.p moran-healy , especially if your wanting to get into showing.

go to dog shows , see what "type" you like etc .

whippets will eat almost anything but when you find your puppy the breeder will advice you on feeding etc , also i think all dogs should be crate trained but never crated for long periods or for punishment .

the FAQ section will help you in a lot of ways

good luck in your search :luck:

Hi and welcome to K9, I'm sure you'll find everything on here you need, I joined a couple of years ago when I was in the same position as you in thinking of getting a whippet and this site has been a god send (and a great time waster  :- " )

Also I loved greyhounds but thought them too large, considered a lurcher whippet type but was advised to hold out for what I wanted and that is good advice, take your time deciding type, breeder etc so you'll know you've found your perfect dog. Whippets are fab, have lots and forget kids :teehee:

Feeding wise (IMO as a 1 whipp first time owner) mine does best on a mixed diet of good quality wet food such as Natures Menu with some biscuit as the norm but then she gets treat dinners such as turkey, lamb, salmon, tuna, chicken with a bit of veg and rice or a bit of potato. Contrary to what my vet told me they won't enjoy a complete dry diet 100% of the time!

I went for a bitch cos I didn't fancy dealing with any male type humping behaviour as we have kids, also cleaner when they have a wee :b She is loving, loyal but independent in that she doesn't fret when left and totally gorgeous. I think they all have individual personalities so I'd go to visit pups prepared just to follow your heart.

Insurance I use are M&S - great cover but much cheaper than say Petplan.

Don't rule out racing either even just for fun it doesn't need to be serious - mine just started trialling having grown up with 2 pet rabbits, can't speak for all whippets but mine seems to know the difference ;) Because she is racing bred she has a tattoo and I prefer this as it is visible to any would be thieves plus you don't have to rely on someone having the equipement to read a chip.

Anyway good luck with your search

Good luck with your search. :luck: I think you'll find whippets are livelier than greyhounds, especially pups and youngsters. They can be particularly michevious and lively as pups and adolescents. It can come as a bit of a shock, as there is this preconception that whippets are quiet couch potatoes when not out and about. They are...but it takes a while for them to grow up and reach this wonderful level of maturity.

Not trying to put you off...they really are the most delightful dogs....just be prepared to wait 16-24 mths before they calm down a bit though (sometimes longer). Some lines will be much calmer than others. Some will be more confident and outgoing than others. It all depends on the pups 'personality' and breeding.

If you go to the FAQ section, there will be a mine of information for you to research there as well.

welcome to k9

good luck in your search im sure you wont be waiting long :luck: :luck: :luck:
