so they are 22weeks old, and house training is going well, now we have found out its the cat who has been leaving the wet patches in the hall

lead walking is great

recall, well star is great 95% of the time but ruby is shocking mabey 60% of the time deffinatly still needing to put tones of work in with her.

so advice, well the other day bracco (the doberman pup) was up visiting, all was going fine, girls did there usual sulk and hide, star spent most of the time in her crate or behind me, but ruby was a bit more nosy, anyway long story short when bracco got to close to her she went for him. like, i mean, propperly went for him, teeth and all.

now i put this down to him being in her house and she wasnt to happy about it as when we went out side she didnt seem to mind him, (they were all on leads though)

anyway not last night but the night before, i was feeding them all chicken (cat included) and ruby got a bit star got a bit and flip got a bit all was going well,

but after the first few bits but ruby finished one of her bit quite quick and imediatly turned around and attacked flip  normaly flip will stand up for herself when it comes to confrontation with the dogs, but ruby was so vicious, flip flew behind the chair, and it took 5mins for me to get her back out, i was really surprised there was that flip was unharmed as i looked as though ruby had got her.

this morning and spoon was in the kitchen and ruby walked in staired at her and them started growling at her. :( when i pulled her out of the kitchen and sent spoon out side.

is this normal between cats and dogs? we have never had any problem before now they have live in relative harmony but this last week ruby has just become quite nasty when it comes to other animals in the house.

anybody got any ideas on why she may be like this?

what i can do if anything to stop it?

im not so worried about the other dogs as we hardly ever have other dogs here anyway, but i am worried for the cats.

any advice would be appreciated

:huggles:

could Ruby be making it known that she wants to be top dog?

all my dogs know that they are not allowed to go for the cats, but if one of the cats dares to scratch the chair that the dogs are sleeping on then talulla or bean will fly at them and growl - i always tell the dogs off in a very firm voice - they have never actually made contact with a cat.

i also feed by dogs and cats separately -

try not to worry - your babies are growing up

just be really firm with them when it comes to the cats x

good luck

i have a whippet just like that.

i have two cats and he does exactly the same thing.

just leave them 2 it and they will soon know who the alpha is.

Can't help regarding the cats. Could you try something next time the Doberman pup comes around to visit?

With the Pups in the House - Pretend to be the mother, you most likely will not want to lick the dogs lips (w00t) so rub one of the dogs lips with your fingers then the other dog - back to the first then the 2nd again and so on

Then let Ruby approach Bracco and see how they go.

Could you let me know how they get on please

so you think she is trying to show who is boss hmmm?

when we are out and about she is so good even when we meet other dogs, my 2 have never even made any noise when they meet others. they usually drop to the ground and roll on to their backs lol.

braccos only going to get bigger than her so i guess he will be boss soon whether she like it or not lol.

i always feed them seperatly, other wise the cats would get nothing. but when its a treat like left over chicken they all gather round. maybe need to give the cats some in the kitchen and take the dogs some place else for it?

thanks

I can't help about the cats, no experience there. But just to let you know that Skye is possessive around food, I feed them separately or else Skye would just bulldoze Phoeb out the way and eat hers.

If Phoeb dares stick her nose in Skye's bowl then she rushes over but isn't aggressive. However, the other night they had a pig ear each but Skye pinched both and I let her as Phoeb isn't fussed about them but later Phoeb tried to take the one that was left and Skye flew at her. I took it off her as I wanted to show her I'm the boss of the food not her (w00t) .

I think Skye and perhaps Ruby are naturally quite bossy, would be interesting to know if they were like this at Sonya's as one of my memories is of Skye clearing all the food bowls there :D .

Difficult to know what to do as I'm not experienced with more than one dog but I would say it's a top dog thing, hope some more advice will come

In our household, the cat and the dogs do behave as if they are all part of the same 'pack', and the few disagreements have always been down to rivalry/jealousy between the top 2. Actually the current cat is very much 'top dog', something I've always reinforced. Sometimes the cat will go to the dogs' bowls as their food is being put out, and takes a token biscuit, and they will wait until she's finished, not something they'd put up with from another dog, and she does it deliberately to make a point.

I'm not sure what to suggest, other than always make it clear to the dogs the cat is a VIP, make them wait for their treats until he/she has had a share, and that any aggressive behaviour won't be tolerated.

yes it sounds like she thinks she is top dog...as it been said be very firm with her, also when you feed tip bits make her wait untill last, start with the cats, then star and ruby at the bottom of the list  this will help to tip the balance  as top dog never eats last)

again when she meets other dogs be very firm with her, other wise as she gets older it will make meeting other dogs a problem  whippets do tend to like their own kind  more than other breeds

hope all settles down for you soon

sounds like you have a dominance thing going on katie does she only do this when you have chicken or a high value treat or toy?

you will have to make it really clear that you do not tolerate any unwanted behaviour to the cats before it becomes out of control i had to do this to daisy when she was younger as soon as she shew any behaviour i didnt like to my cats i removed her out of the room shut the door and left her on her own for 5 minutes untill she had calmed down enough to come back in she soon realised she had to leave the cats alone and a week of doing this she was fine and has been ever since in fact she idolises them both :wub:maybe she feels a bit insecure with having bracco in her house he might be being quiet rough with her without you realising which may be upsetting her i hope you manage to get it sorted

I personally wouldn't have sent the cat outside, it didn't do

anything wrong, i would have removed Ruby.

These young whips are a lot of trouble to us aren't they
