Your average person just wants a whippet. Price is the factor here.If I wanted a dog for showing, I'd save my money and buy from lines I found appealing.

If (like I do) race, I'd pick based on winning lines that consistently produce dogs running into veteran careers. i.e. speed AND durability.

If I wanted a pet I'd probably pick from the likes of you, but even so, I would be inclined to look into the breedlines used for disease and longevity. I should add that I would look for the latter 2 factors when choosing any pup.
ALL bar one , well two if you count the puppy that hasnt sold are going to working homes, it seems to have got lost that these pups were ALL sold before they are old enough to leave their dams

And all 4 of us have kept a pup each, and all the bitches owners have been out in the field with Sonny on more than one occassion

As for pups coming back some of you that frequent other sites will know that I recently went and TOOK a yearling back that I had bred and gave the owner the hiding of his life in the pub in front of his mates and brother, and brought the bitch back to health before giving her to a friend

jeeeez that poor dog

Just as a matter of interest, what is Sonny's stud fee. There is a reason for this question by the way. I'll tell you when you answer my query! :))
IF I charge them Anne I charge £150, I have on occassion asked for a pup if I like a bitches working abilities(I have been out with most of the bitches brought to him) and then GIVEN those pups to friends who work their dogs

And if people honestly think restricting the use of stud dogs to the general public is going to stop the breeding of pups then they are mistaken, and I think most people are hypocritical, if it isnt about money then only charge £100/pup about the cost of rearing one properly not £600 for one from shown parents

As you know Darrren the Kennel Club are to restrict the number of litters a bitch can have, do you think that legislation should be brought in to restrict the number of litters a dog can sire and if so how would you decide which bitches were more suitable than others. In addition do you think all dogs should be DNA profiled and do you agree that there are too many whippet puppies being bred and is this a ticking time bomb for the rescue organisations to have to deal with.

I don't know anything about you or Sonny, out of interest, how is he bred?

I have always thought 6 litters was to many for a bitch as for DNA if nobody has anything to hide whats the prob?

but this is meant to be a democracy who would it be upto to decide how many litters a dog can sire ?

who would decide who can breed a litter and who cant?, I bet people from the show world would lobby that it should be them!?

just because someone shows their dog successfully doesnt mean to say they would care for and rear a litter better than someone who has never stepped in the ring.

And once again if it isnt about money why are pups from show winners are more expensive

I'm not sure puppies from show winners are more expensive, in-fact most people I know who show and breed are pretty much where I would expect them to be as regards prices and I know they take an awful lot of trouble placing their puppies. They too have puppies booked prior to them being being born and so I think you are pretty much on a par with them. What I do think, however, is that people who breed and do NOT show (and I am using showing as an example, it could be race or work) hike up the price because their perception is that people will be impressed by the word "show", if only we could ensure that all puppies came from responsible breeders.! This is maybe where the Kennel Club's Accredited Breeder scheme comes into play, a scheme which in its' early days had problems but which I feel is improving all the time.

There is another aspect I would like to comment on and that is genetics, not something I feel qualified to discuss in any detail but again an aspect of pedigree dog breeding which The Kennel Club are taking very seriously.

I am occasionally asked advice by people looking to buy a puppy, not just whippets, I do my homework before offering advice and up to now all have bought puppies which have enhanced their lives. I always think "would I be happy buying a puppy from this person", my response determines the advice given!

IMO anyone who breeds a litter without the intention of keeping a puppy is in it for money. It's just a shame that more people can't or won't own up to it. To dress it up as trying to improve the breed, and some other such nonsensical reasons I have heard, is just a load of old tosh!

Can anyone give any reasons as to why they think they can, or are qualified to improve the breed, and why they think that is more important than filling the rescues with more and more dogs? To breed litter after litter saying you are improving the breed suggests that you are a little above your station, and what consitutes improvement in your mind, might be a far cry from what others might call improvement.

The vast majority of us think the whippet is perfect as it is. Stop hiding behind the excuse of improving the breed, and admit you are in it for the money - if it was so much of an improvement, you would be keeping one of your own puppies, but many do not. To advise someone to buy a puppy from a breeder, is in my mind helping someone to boost their bank balance, for the majority who call themselves breeders are in it for exactly that!

I may not agree with a lot of what Darren has said, but at least he has the guts to admit that he has allowed his stud dog to be used for financial gain, just a shame there aren't more as honest as he is

Thanks Darren! A friend of mine wanted to use a black dog advertised on a certain site because she wanted coloured pups and had homes lined up, plus she was going to keep one. This woman who owns the dog said she prefers the smaller whippets, but admits he dog is 22" tall and charges £400.00 as blacks are rare!!!!!!! She never asked my friend how her bitch was bred, how old she was just wanted to know when her bitch would be in season. Needless to say my friend didn't go sown that road!!!!!

That to me is ripping people off as the dog is not shown or worked and cannot be raced as he is to big.

There are and always will be people who allow anyone to use their dog or dogs, not thought about what happens to the puppies. All they want is the glory of letting people know their dog has sired yet another litter and put photos on forums. grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Maybe the people who ought to be taking more of an interest in the breeding of dogs are Revenue and Customs!

I'm sure if they appear on X-Factor then they also appear in the show ring. :-

lol yes you're right but Wagner couldnt park a van/4wd with disabled tax next to the stage

Forgive me , but what is DLA ? and what does it stand for ?

Oh Darren, you have opened a HUGE can of worms. I know people who make a living out of breeding a couple of toy breeds plus these NEW designer breeds. I bet HM Insp of Taxes would like to know about them. Also the BLUE BADGE HOLDERS who cheat. I had a blue badge when I had sciatica and after I had my hip replaced because I had problems walking distances. It's run out now and I won't be renewing it.

I know people on DLA, have a free car or free RFL, (no car tax) and can run a dog in the ring.

My OH pays for these people as do I.

Now. off topic.

I apologize to K9. Just had a lapse.

Getting back on track. There are far too many whippet puppies for sale county wide. How many of you know people who have had, are planning to a litter, or have a bitch booked to your dog???

Honestly, what a shame our lovely breed is in the KC Top Ten. Not good, OMO.

I see it like this in the dog world....lots of people showing dogs. Rushing to Gain champ status then for some bizare reason they then think they have a dog worthy of breeding/studding.Ok the dog has been shown to have good confirmation from many judges...what does this prove, nothing just that it has good confirmation.I see alot of show folk breeding for the look of a whippet or what ever breed. What about testing for prey drive, tenacity and all the other qualitys that a judge cant tell you from just looking at it walking round a ring. The point is we should be breeding the very best to the very best and the truth is if this was done. There realy wouldnt be that many dogs worth breeding. The only way to know you have the best is testing and proving your dogs...confirmation is just one rung up a long ladder to proving you have a dog worthy of breeding.

I do have a bitch booked , a sooty sam bitch (just opened another can there Anne) he claims it is working he tells me he wants to breed a replacement to this bitchwho is now 5yrs AND wants to bring the size down (god my can opener is busy )

as for blue card holders, the cheats make my **** boil
