i think the average price for a whippet from a good breeder is around the £400/450 mark, i would personally never pay any more than that show/working or racing bred.
from what i gather though and my own research most (stress the word most not all) of the pups priced over this are maybe not from the most reputable of breeder and most (again MOST) you can see repeat adds month after month for more and more puppies,
it is quite easy for these people to claim showing parents and champion pedigrees to the unsuspecting pet owners who come to view them, and the fact that more often than not i hear of people buying cockerpoos and labradoodles for the "bargin" price of upwards of £800 means that more and more people are thinking that £600 for a "Pure bred" KC registered "show quality" whippet pup is a good price.
so arguing that its the show faternaty who bump up the price, to me is a little unfair, as to me its the back yard breeders and farmers who charge the over inflated prices as there pups are "show quality"
just to add i dont show, or work my dogs, so this is just my take on the higher pricing in some adverts.
