Hello everyone
I'm a first time owner with an 8 week old golden retriever puppy Dexter. All a bit new and overwhelming (me!)

Great thanks! It's like having a new baby all over again. Started puppy socialisation classes this week which have been brilliant. Just started first walks! Thank goodness as garden like a muddy football pitch with all the rain and 'welly walks' for wees and poohs. Anyone else with a large breed 14 wk pup?

No not 14 week but 1 month old puppies... she is lovely Puppy socialisation classes are great for training the mischievous pups . Keep up them walks they are great for hyper puppies! What food are you feeding her?

Hi Violet
Dexter is doing great, he had a bit of a funny tummy at first, now on Hills Science large breed puppy food and has settled down. Wow! 1 month puppies, what breed?

A lot of vets recommend Hills Science Plan, but that's because they get very little nutrition training and what they do get is often sponsored by commercial dog food companies. If you look at HSD for large puppies on the All About Dog Food website you'll see they give it 3 out of 5: Science Plan Puppy Healthy Development Large rated 3.0 out of 5! All About Dog Food And the main ingredient is maize, whereas a dog's digestive system is clearly designed with meat in mind.

Of course, many dogs thrive on Hills, just as many humans thrive on a less than perfect diet, but it's always good to be aware and do your own research

My step-niece has a 15-week old GR pup and he is absolutely scrummy!

Thank you interesting thanks for the info. When we picked him up we went home with some puppy food from the breeder, he had an awful tummy for a week but this has settled now, tbh we had a sample of Hills from the vets and tried him on it which is why we've ended up buying more rather than chopping and changing. Out of interest what food is your step niece feeding her GS pup?

I'm not sure - she might have said James Wellbeloved. I've only seen her once since she got the pup as they live a long way from us and didn't want to start giving advice on feeding, training, etc. Well I did, but it would have been rather rude, especially as I'm not an expert

I agree, chopping and changing diet isn't something you want to do too much, particularly when you've found a food that seems to work for your pup. There's plenty of info available (some inevitably contradictory) if you want to investigate in the future.

Yep it's a a big learning curve! Puppy classes have been brilliant for socialisation for him, definitely recommend!
